Great location, decent apartment, sketchy neighborhood
I chose this property because of its location in the Garden District and proximity to the streetcar. It did not disappoint as it was very conveniently located near the things I wanted to see and do during my short stay in New Orleans.
Don't let the exterior of the apartment scare you away, although it is not very attractive. Much like the rest of the Garden District, the building is somewhat in a state of disrepair. I was very disappointed in the Garden District. It is just sad and depressing...most buildings are in dire need of repair or rebuilding. Can't blame Katrina-this is decades of decay. If you're looking for beautifully maintained Victorian homes and gardens, you won't find many here. Don't venture out late at night either - it doesn't seem like a very safe neighborhood after nightfall. If you're into hipster style and living, you'll feel comfortable here.
The entrance to the apartment makes you feel like you're sneaking in the back door to the building through an alley. The private entrance is nice, however. What you see in the photos provided is highly accurate. Strange layout, with bedroom and bathroom on the first floor and kitchen on the upper floor. The staircase is steep and long, so I don't recommend this property for people with young children or if you have trouble with climbing.
The apartment is nicely maintained, unlike the outside of the building. It's very clean and nicely furnished. It has a very stylish decor. The bed is comfortable and the kitchen is fully stocked with everything you need. Overall, I was very pleased with the look and cleanliness of the apartment (although there were ants in the kitchen).
A word of caution: if you visit in the summertime, the apartment has two in-window air conditioners, one in the kitchen and the other in the bedroom. These are necessary as the heat is stifling. But, be prepared for the droning noise all night long. Turn it off and you'll melt into the bed. So, sleep can be a challenge.
Overall, I was comfortable and pleased with the apartment interior.
