Charming Paauilo Cottage

We stayed in this delightful home for a week while we enjoyed the wonders of the "other side" of the Big Island.
This is a lovely country home complete with nice furniture, new linens and towels and a well equipped kitchen.
The house is only a few years old and is designed to blend with the vast outdoors. We spent hours on the glassed-in lanai overlooking the fields and the ocean beyond. At night the moon and stars light up the sky, a spectacular sight! The house is ideally located on a very quiet country lane. The rural roads leading to the house are all very scenic with views of pasturelands, forests and a variety of birds. We enjoyed walking along the roads, a pleasant way to enjoy the countryside. There was very little traffic.
This was a very different experience than the hustle and bustle of the tourist areas on the west side of the island. However, when we wanted to visit that side it wasn't very far away. The highway leads directly to the Kohala Coast and the best swimming beaches in Hawaii. You pass by the towns of Honokaa and Waimea on the way. Honokaa is conveniently close to Paauilo and has a good grocery store. Waimea has good restaurants, nice shops, and also grocery stores.
The Hamakua Coast from beautiful Waipio Valley south to Hilo offers some of the best tropical scenery in all of Hawaii with majestic ocean views, historic sites, waterfalls, and botanical gardens. HIlo is very historic with a wonderful "old town" and worthwhile museums. We didn't venture beyond Hilo, but the highway continues on to the volcano, thirty some miles beyond Hilo, an easy day trip.. All of our sight seeing destinations were comfortable driving distances from Pauillo. There was so much to enjoy and we didn't begin to see everything. We hope to come back soon.
