Walk to Beaches:
From Casita Rosita you can walk past 3 house, turn at the coast road to the right and left to a short path driveway wide down hill to a lovely cove. Walk around the rocks to your right and get to a wide open coconut grove lined beach. Or walk to the Malecon down steps to the sea, or step to the sand all along Esperanza Bay, or walk the sand to the huge long beach of SunBay State Park.
U.S. Fish & Wildlife Refuge beaches are not to be missed, for the diversity of settings, beach entrances, and most make you feel you own the place. See the island maps in the house and distributed everywhere.
Snorkeling from shore by Casita Rosita:
The beach just down from our house has good snorkeling that continues along the high cliff and a short ways the other direction. Snorkel also on the west side of the little island you can see from shore—it’s a 15 minutes swim out.
SunBay State Park:
Just around the corner from Casita Rosita at the edge of the Esperanza neighborhood, the SunBay State park can be walked to along the coast, or driven to. This is a very long beach with a view to an island and an isthmus. Easy beach entrance, park casually just across the sandy road from the water. Access to bathrooms, snackbar, tapas & drinks delivered. Swim area is roped off.
Other Refuge Beaches:
On the southwestern side of Vieques includes Playa Grande–great for walking and listening to a loud ocean; and Playa Negra–a reak walk in. On the northern side, there are many beaches. These are all on the Atlantic.
WILDLIFE: Four species of sea turtles live in the waters of Vieques and nest on its shores, sometimes you can see them when snorkeling. Birds and frogs sing in this tropical ecosystem. Egrets stand on the backs of horses. Vieques feels out of time. The main streets are newly paved and wild horses roam them & the beaches.
Vieques is, again, voted the Best Island in the Caribbean (as well as in Bermuda & Bahamas) by Travel + Leisure magazine’s 2012 World’s Best Awards readers’ survey. We are famous for our natural landscape, on land and in the water, and dozens of unspoiled beach choices.
Stay at Casita Rosita and relax, or you can horseback ride, ocean kayak, bicycle, motor scooter, play tennis, take yoga classes on the beach or in studio, sail, boat, jet ski, surf, and scuba dive. Jump off the new and old piers in Esperanza Bay, paddle surf, explore lagoons & mangrove wetlands, an old sugar mill, and experience wildlife, from sea turtles to wild horses that roam the island. Plenty of healing massage therapists, including reflexology. Join the drum circle, sing your heart out at karoke, listen to a live band, eat at your pick of 43 restaurants.
We have rented our home for over a dozen years. We understand the importance of helping you with logistics and getting the most out of your stay in Vieques. We bought a home in Vieques after working as volunteers there. We write for the local island magazine about wildlife, flowers and nature. We have traveled extensively ourselves as nature volunteers and have outfitted our Vieques home accordingly. We endeavor to make you comfortable and happy.
Open, airy, bright, close to everything, water view, large rooms, stone floors, nice bathroom.
The prior owner gardened, so our soil is fabulous and we are intent gardeners. The huge mango tree, the nice neighbors, the closeness to everything, the consistency of the housing on this block, all made this house a great choice after looking at many. We were so lucky.
