After visiting the Oregon Coast for over 20 years, Depoe Bay is my favorite for its small town feel and spectacular Ocean views. My hobbies and interests include travel, anything marine biology related, golf, downhill mountain biking, hot air ballooning, kayaking, base jumping, telemark skiing, hiking '14ers', crabbing/deep sea/fly fishing, coastal trekking, scuba diving, and meeting new people from around the World. Member Pacific Whale Foundation Maui, NHRA and BMWCCA. See my friend captain Dave's latest video captured by drone on whales and dolphins here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bo_f8mV5khg#t=12
If you've never been to Depoe Bay on the Oregon Coast, then you are in for a real treat! Not only is the area gorgeous, but there is a lot to do as well. I suggest 'first timers' to the area spend at least three or four days exploring must see attractions within 30 miles North and South of Depoe Bay. Six to seven days is ideal. Copy and paste my guide for a few tips on what to do, where to eat, etc. here: http://bit.ly/11UIbA8
There are whale-watching trips, sidewalk shops, cafes, deep sea fishing charters, art galleries, aquariums, snorkeling, pier, bay, and river fishing, rock climbing, wineries, lighthouses, and much more - not to mention some of the best clam chowder in the country. Yes, on the West coast! Shop the local farmers markets, fresh fish outlets, and wineries. Newport Bay front is a neat area to check out, they also have a great aquarium there. Don't forget the antique shops up and down HWY 101!
If you are a golfer, then, yes, we have that too in some of the finest courses on the West Coast. There are 6 courses within 20 miles! Salishan GC & Resort is just a few miles North.
Shoppers will absolutely love the deals to be had at all of the factory outlet shops in nearby Lincoln City.
There are also plenty of local activities for the kids, including pirate treasure hunts, kite flying, beach combing, etc
After owning one of the first units (1998) at The Village at North Pointe in building #1, purchased this ground floor unit in building #2 in 2000. This unit was a model for Village at North Pointe complex and has unique features that don't come standard in other units here. It also has one of the best oceanfront views in Depoe Bay.
The deck has a unique direct view of a tiny inlet where waves come crashing in and seabirds often bathe. There are also extremely rare Sea Palms growing here that you can see right from the unit. They currently stand at just under 1' tall, but were just 2'' when discovered at this location roughly two years ago.
The sea palm was known by the natives of California by the name of Kakgunu-chale before any Europeans entered the region. Postelsia was first scientifically described by Franz Josef Ruprecht (1814–1870) in 1852 from a specimen found near Bodega Bay in California. Ruprecht, an Austro-Hungarian who became curator of botany at the Academy of Sciences in St. Petersburg in 1839, studied seaweed specimens collected by botanist Ilya Vosnesensky, and published a paper describing one sea-grass and five seaweeds, one of which was Postelsia. The sea palm has been used by several textbooks, such as the Campbell - Reece Biology textbook, as an example of multicellular protists, as well as an example of the class Phaeophyceae.
