Photos and Description of the Volcano vacation cabin rental
3 Bedroom 1.5 Bath hand crafted Ohia, Cedar & Pine Retreat

Explore Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and experience the Aloha of Hawaii Island while staying at this gorgeous, hand crafted home near Volcano Golf Course & Country Club. Nestled amongst the native Koa and Ohia Lehua Trees with a sweeping view of Mauna Loa and a steady serenade from the numerous native birds, this Hawaiian retreat will envelope you with a complete sense of peace and relaxation. Hale Ka Lehua was designed by owners John & Mindi Clark and personally built by John which shows in every well thought out detail.

The extensive use of glass gives one the feeling of being outside while within the warm comfort of indoors...perhaps snuggled next to the wood burning fireplace.

This 3 bedroom, 1.5 bath retreat has a completely private master bedroom located outside of the main home off of the front lanai. This sweet room has a full sized memory foam bed with a native garden view, 1/2 bath, night stand and reading lights over the bed.

The main floor bedroom has a queen memory foam bed, a small desk and closet and is located across the hall from the full bath (both Tub & shower).

The upstairs 'room with a view'' is a multi-purpose room with a full size Futon sofa bed (a real matress not a cotton one) that can be used as a reading or game room, a bedroom or a perfect place to practice Yoga, meditate or simply have some quiet time enjoying the full, mountain view of Mauna Loa through Frank Lloyd Wright inspired seemless corner windows.

The kitchen boasts gorgeous 'Flower Garden' granite, gas stove and oven and is completely stocked with Le Creuset cookware, small appliances and Riedel wine glasses.

French doors spill out from the solid ohia wood floored living & dining room onto the wrap around lanai that has outside dining and gas BBQ grill as well.

We invite you to come enjoy the beauty and quietude of this beautiful brand new home while exploring the amazing dynamics of Kilauea, the world's most active volcano located within Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

The 'Dry side' of Volcano keeps you out out of what can be a constant drizzle & fog that shrouds the eastern flank. The golf course area is located just beyond the crest of 4,000' and dips you into the Kau side of Volcano where the temps will still range from the 40's to the mid 70's but with far more sun! We are 3 miles past the entrance to the park, but you can walk to the edge of the caldera from our home in just 20 minutes...a perfect place to sip a glass of wine while soaking in the view of Halema'uma'u and getting a glimpse of the powers of Madame Pele.

Both the Volcano Golf Course and Volcano Winery are within a few minutes walk from the house.

About Mindi Clark

We moved to the Hawaiian village of Kalapana located on the SE corner of the Big Island in 1981 to escape the freeways of So. California. We were blessed to live, surf and paddle canoe here for 8 years before Madame Pele covered this community with lava in the late 80's & early 90's. We lost our home to the lava but our orchid farm,'Kalapana Tropicals' that we started in 1987 remains in tact and is now just one of 2 orchid nurseries that we own and operate...the other being in Kurtistown where we have lived since 1990. Free orchid farm tours for our guests!

Mindi Clark purchased this cabin in 2009
Why Mindi Clark chose Volcano

We love the Volcano area for it's cool weather, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, and hiking and cycling opportunities. It's a quick get-a-way for us as it is only 20 minutes from our home in Kurtistown and we feel like we are in another world!

What makes this cabin unique

We selected this property because it is located on the 'dry side' of Volcano, it's bounty of native Koa and Ohia trees that are filled with birds. John took great care in removing only enough trees to build and the home is designed with a bedroom off the lanai to save trees and give this home a tree house feel.

Since we live on the West side of the Big Island, we frequently visit Volcano and enjoy trying various vacation rentals. I took an out of town friend here for 1 night and we immediately "ooed" and "awed" over the lava rock driveway and custom built home. You'll notice that the home is not completely finished, but it will in no way affect your stay and enjoyment...and you may not even notice. Very clean and new, delightful for cooking and having a nice dinner inside or morning coffee and breakfast outside. I love the special touches of the hand-cranked ground 100% Hawaii coffee beans, the beautiful orchids throughout the house, and lots of blankets (It's chilly at night there even in May!). As of right now, there are no drapes (except a sheer one in the bathroom and detached bedroom), but it is private and sits up high enough to not be a problem. If you have a problem snorer in your group, this is the perfect place to put them in the detached bedroom/bathroom location out of ear shot from the rest of the group. :)

Hale Ka Lehua is a beautiful, well appointed cabin in the best location possible near Volcano National Park. Nestled in a quite neighborhood among beautiful flowering plants and within walking distance of Volcano National Park, you will be torn with whether to explore the majesty of the Volcanos and rugged coast nearby or just stay at the house to unwind. No detail is left unattended to. We stayed all over the island on our 8 day vacation, including in a condo in Kona, a townhome in Kahlua and a hotel in Hilo and this was by far the best accomodations. And, the owners are a pleasure to communicate with as well :) Highly recommended for a family or two couples traveling together.

I inquired about this property immediately after viewing it online on VRBO, and Mindy called me back withing a few hours, and we set up the booking. She responded to all my questions over e-mail and was very accommodating. My family and I had a wonderful stay at Hale Ka Lehua, the house is in superb condition, with a gourmet kitchen, excellent craftmanship and beautiful decor throughout. The house is full of large windows which let in lots of light and it also feels very private with the forest views from the back deck. All the interior wood and the wood stove gives this place a cozy luxury cabin feel. Its very close to the volcano, and we were easily able to go out again after dinner to view the glowing lava at the caldera. I had the pleasure of sleeping up in the loft and the starry night sky view through the large and corner windows was truly amazing! I highly recommend Hale Ka Lehua if you want beautiful, comfortable accommodations close to the volcano!

Very enjoyable experience at Hale Ka Lehua. Brand new and super comfortable accommodations included a fully stocked kitchen and gorgeous garden view via big windows on 3 sides of the great room. Loved sitting on the porch and watching the wild birds walk through the yard and just a very short drive to Volcano National Park. Saw many amazing sights on the Hilo side of the island to include a helicopter ride over the lava fields, tons of waterfalls, Ahalanui park hot springs, and the Onomea Bay Scenic Drive - a must see.

Mindy/Kalapana Tropicals was so helpful in providing advice and information on this home and sights in the local area. Definitely recommend a stay at Hale Ka Lehua.

Incredible craftsman home in perfect setting

A creative master piece in the perfect location for touring this section of the Big Island. John & Mindi, the owners & builders, obviously loved creating this masterpiece and it shows in all the details. Some of the materials used are one of a kind. The wood used for the staircase is the most beautiful we have ever seen and the granite counter tops are incredible. The stone work inside and out is amazing.
The home is very well set up for visiting guests. Mindi is extremely helpful with hints for discovering their part of paradise.
The night view from the Master Bedroom retreat is like being in a tree house. Views on 4 sides of tree tops and a million stars plus sometimes the glowing orange plume from the caldera. After the heat and humidly of the Kona Coast the refreshing temperatures in the 70's were delightful.
We hope to visit again.

Our time at Hale Ka Lehua

We spent four nights at the Lehua House in Volcano Hawaii and it was delightful. There were four of us (two couples) and the house was very comfortable with one bedroom inside the house and one bedroom off the deck which they call "the pod" with its own bathroom. It has many windows and has the feel of a tree house, very charming. The only drawback was room for suitcases. It is cozy. There is also a room/loft upstairs with a futon and lots of windows. The location is great since it is close to the park entrance and little town of Volcano and not far from Hilo. On the way to Hilo you must stop at Hilo Coffee Mill for the best coffee on the Island. Very friendly people and exquisite beautiful chickens greet you at this quaint place. The owners of Hale Ka Lehua are so accomodating and helpful. They have put so much of themselves in this lovely house. We would like to return!

Our stay was awesome. The house is beautiful and has all the convince's of home. We loved that the house is only a walk or bike ride from the Volcano National Park. We spent hours hiking and drving to the crater in the evening to see the glow of the crater.
Being able to BBQ out on the lanai and sitting by the fireplace after a long day of fun without worrying about a long drive is what the location of the cabin is all about. We are already planning another trip to stay.

When we first arrived to the house we were in love, just the beauty of the house and all the surrounding area takes your breath away. The house has so many personal touches you feel right at home the minute you walk in the door. Our family was lucky enough to stay at the house for 7 days. We found it a perfect fit for our family and friends, the pod bed room is a perfect place for a little private time, and the loft bedroom has beautiful views of the area and the volcano. The home is beautifully furnished and the kitchen flows into the living area making it a perfect place to entertain. We also loved that it was the perfect place for a morning run or walk and the nights on the lanai were so relaxing. The home is located right outside the national park and our family enjoyed a number of hikes in the park. We will definitely return to the house on our next visit to Hawaii, and have already recommended it to our family and friends.

My family enjoyed a long weekend at this place and we can"t wait to spend time there again. The house is beautiful and very well maintained. We were pleased with how well the house is stocked and the kitchen had all the best cookware, appliances, etc. We really enjoyed the pod bedroom and it was perfect for some peace and quiet away from the rest of the house. I highly recommend this place!

I stayed here with several close friends for one night and only wish I could have stayed longer! The home is lovingly appointed and absolutely beautiful - a masterpiece of craftsmanship in wood, tile and glass! And the "flowing lava" driveway is a fun touch! The expansive glass windows looking out into the surrounding native forest gives you feeling of really being away from it all! And the stars at night are incredible! We walked to the entrance of the Hawaii Volcano National Park right from the cabin and we intended to walk back at night so we could see the red glow of the crater, but we were too cozy sitting in the comfy chairs by the fireplace! The quiet, cool night and memory foam mattress made for a perfect night's sleep. I will definitely return and look forward to spending more time at this lovely forest retreat!
