ITS LIKE OWNING YOUR OWN VACATION HOME THAT SOMEONE ELSE MAINTAINS!

Ruffed Grouse Lodge is located in Elk Township, within three miles of Phillip’s town center. Elk is situated in the heart of Price County, the Ruffed Grouse Capital of the World as designated by the Ruffed Grouse Society and is in the center of Wisconsin’s Northwoods with over 1.2 million acres of huntable land and the largest ruffed grouse and woodcock population in the nation.

HUNTERS RETURN WITH THEIR DOGS EVERY FALL TO PURSUE THE ELUSIVE 'WINGED DYNAMITE'

ELK RIVER FARM, the Lodge’s adjoining sister property, has very private access to a two mile stretch of the secluded Elk River. There is a boat landing for Lodge guests who want to fish for Muskie, Smallmouth Bass, Walleye, Bluegills and Crappies. Canoes and kayaks are handy for a peaceful trip along a beautiful stretch of the river where wildlife is abundant.

WE HAVE A UNIQUE FEATURE NOT FOUND ANYWHERE ELSE IN THE NORTHWOODS!

'Karesansui' is a Japanese word meaning 'dry landscape garden’. At Elk River Farm, a 19th century barn foundation has been transformed to create a miniature stylized landscape through the carefully composed arrangement of indigenous rocks, water features, moss, pruned trees and bushes and small stones that are raked to represent ripples in water. The garden is meant to be observed from a vantage point outside the garden. It is intended to imitate the intimate essence of nature and to serve as an aid to relaxation and the contemplation of life. The owners are students of Sukiya lifestyles and are delighted to share this special feature of the farm with interested guests.

Walking trails through the forest connect Ruffed Grouse Lodge and Elk River Farm. Both locations have fire pits with free wood and picnic areas, which are perfect for family gatherings.

Alumacraft fishing boats, canoes and kayaks are included at both the Lodge and Elk River Farm. A pontoon boat, a Yamaha 8hp outboard motor, and a MinnKota trolling motor are available for daily or weekly rental. For guests bringing their own boats, there is a public landing serving Wilson Lake one mile from the Lodge. There is also a private boat launch area for access to the Elk River.

RGL is pet friendly and has a free, sheltered, heated dog kennel.

What makes this lodge unique

One of the first resorts on Wilson Lake was situated on this choice property. The grounds are gently sloping with stairless access to the lake. The history of the area is fascinating and our bay is quiet, quiet, quiet except during the fishing opener and the 4th of July when excited fishermen and families celebrate summer.

This Trip, My Son met winter...and for the first time felt the joy of sledding down your hill, Now that we are home here on this Island, he talks about the Lodge and how he wants to go back. He says I want to go back to John and Linda's. What more can I say but Thank you. Thank you for giving us that quiet still place where we can go when the going gets tough. From the personal welcome greeting on the chalkboard to the home-made chocolate chip cookies to the tour of the new cabin under construction, John and Linda's hospitality was incredibly warm. "Ruffed Grouse Lodge" provided a beautiful respite for our family gathering during a snow- filled "Spring Break!"
Everything looked as if it was new and the kitchen was fully stocked with every tool for cooking. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and wished it could have been longer. Our Southern California- born and raised eight year old daughter cried when we packed up to leave. We all agreed that we need to return for a summer visit!

My husband and I were greeted by Linda. We arrived late and she was very happy to instruct us to our Timberdoodle cabin. She most graciously let us stay while we worked on a project at the Middle School. The cabin is beautifully equipped with lovely bedding, Kohler sinks, a comfortable bed, warm furnace, and everything we needed for cooking and enjoying ourselves. I only wish we could have stayed there longer. It was wonderful to wake up in the middle of the night to see the moon over the water. It is so clear... the planets were actually sparkling in the water. We definetly want to come again . It was beautiful.

A fabulous getaway

Ruffed Grouse Lodge is a beautiful and spacious home on Wilson Lake, perfect for a quiet getaway or a fun fishing trip. Upon our arrival, our family didn't know where to start - to tour the lake in the canoe and kayaks (with all sizes of life jackets available for use on site), to fish in beautiful Wilson Lake with its abundance of pan fish directly off the RGL dock, to wander the amazing vegetable garden, to check for eggs in the chicken coop, to practice shooting the BB gun in the nearby gravel pit, or just to rest in the hammock overlooking the lake. We eventually did all of it and more during our week-long stay.

The lodge is incredibly clean and well-maintained, as is the entire property. And John and Linda were very gracious hosts, showing us the area and answering our questions without ever being intrusive.

RGL was definitely a great find, and a place we hope to return to soon!

A True Sportsman's Vacation!

A True Sportsman's Vacation!

I went to Ruffed Grouse Lodge with my father, brother and family friend for a fall hunting trip in October. We chose to stay in Phillips because of the proximity to what we heard was some of the best grouse hunting in the country. The owners of the lodge were helpful and friendly from the moment that we connected with them about booking a stay. Even before our arrival, they arranged a hunting guide and provided tips about other nearby land to hunt. They suggested that we bring our fishing poles in case we wanted to fish during our downtime, and told us the lodge that we would be staying in was situated right on a lake with additional river property to fish on as well. Fishing and hunting in the same trip = a true sportsman's vacation.

When we arrived we realized that we couldn't have chosen a better place to stay. The property had a private shorefront on Wilson Lake and the Lodge looked right over it. Everyone in our group was coming from a urban location and immediately appreciated the look and feel of the Lodge. It was beautifully furnished, yet comfy and had many other things to keep us occupied. Though it had a great flat screen TV, however, we didn't even turn it on ONCE while there. We played pool, fished, hunted, played board games, kayaked and explored the property while enjoying the time away from the hustle of our daily lives. It was one of the few vacations that I've taken where I was able to escape looking at my computer, cell phone or tv for a few days.

The owners arranged for our group to hunt with one of the best guides in the area. He was extremely knowledgable about not only the area, but also the habitat and behavior of the Ruffed Grouse. We walked away with a number of birds of our own and had a fantastic time. We also managed to do plenty of fishing while there with a plethora of different boats to choose from.

The property was always welcoming to come home to. The owners let us pick our own fresh eggs from their chicken coop. I can imagine that this would be a great place to bring your family because there are so many fun activities. Taking a vacation as a group here was a great bonding experience because of the time that we were able to spend together.

Tip: if you book a trip at the RGL make sure to ask to see the japanese rock garden and tea house. It's one of the most unique features of the experience.

2013 will be the fifth year our family and friends gather at the Ruffed Grouse during the Czech and Slovak Festival. We keep coming back because it’s the perfect choice for us. Kids love it for the lake, the critters, the electronics, and the fireflies. Seniors love it for easy movement with the open floor plan (one uses a walker) and kind help from John and Linda to transport them along the grassy shoreline, past the excellent boats, to the beach. The rest of us enjoy the lodge for all of the above and the great kitchen where we gather to make themed meals and enjoy wine and beer, conversation and views. Storms over the lake are spectacular. We found ancestral family friends in town and the lodge owners helped us at every step to entertain; providing extra place-settings and grills, coolers and seating. The Japanese garden on the river is just the place to meditate and soothe the soul. We also admire their hard work keeping invasive species and other lake weeds under control to make Wilson Lake a great Wisconsin treasure. Highly recommended.

My wife and I stayed at the smaller Timberdoodle cabin and had a great romantic getaway. The grounds were gorgeous with access to both the lake and the river. We enjoyed both using the kayaks and boats that the owners had available to guests. John and Linda(the owners) were awesome hosts and made our stay very relaxing. The Timberdoodle cabin is perfect for a couple, very cozy.

I have rented cabins all around the country and my experience at the Ruffed Grouse stand out as one of the best experience I have had. I highly recommend it.

Family Fun at RGL!

Our family was up for a week vacation in June 2012. In total we were 6 adults and 4 children. We all had a wonderful time swimming, fishing and pontooning. John and Linda were gracious hosts. They have a wonderful garden for fresh salads, an herb garden and of course the chicken coop was a big hit with the children (but Willie stole the show)! We all enjoyed fishing both the lake and the amazing River. One day our boys caught 49 Bluegill big enough to keep! They were glowing! The Timberdoodle and main lodge are amazing, clean and have everything you can think of! There is even laundry available in the lodge which is great when you have 4 children along. We enjoyed games of pool in the evenings, and there are many games and movies should the rain show up. We cannot wait to go back next year, it was hard to leave. Our children talk about it all year, counting down the days until we return. We strongly recommend staying here, we will be back next June!

Picture Perfect for a family affair

This was the perfect facility for our family reunion. There was plenty of room to be together or find your own private area. The views are spectacular, (we watched the full moon rise "over the lake), the lake was clean and warm, and there was something for all of us to do. The pool table made for great competitions, and the supply of games and puzzles kept the four year old busy. The complete kitchen was a joy to work in and the view of the lake from the dining room was great. The four year old, who was here from his home in Hawaii, asked his mom "Can we move here?"
