This clean, spacious, and well-stocked vacation retreat was just perfect for our family vacation. Our hosts, Gilly and Richard were extremely informative, helpful and accommodating. The meal Gilly made for us was one of the most memorable we had during our trip to Ireland. Day trips to Kinsale and Clonakilty were great. The beach was a short walk with breathtaking views. A great place to swim in the surf or explore the caves during low tide. The only downside was that it was not within walking distance to town, which meant that we were always driving everywhere. Overall, we highly recommend the cottage - you won't be disappointed!

My family and I thoroughly enjoyed the West Cottage. The proximity to the ocean and beautiful surroundings were extremely relaxing. My husband, son, niece and some local cousins stayed on with us at various times during our 1 1/2 week stay. The cottage was roomy & accomodating for 7 people with no problem. I highly recommend this cottage for those seeking a getaway and a hideaway, that is full of beauty, good company and fresh air.

Charming Amenities in the Countryside

The Ireland adventure started for us when we (two couples traveling together) piled into our rental car at Shannon Airport and started on a scenic route to Butlerstown where our accommodations were "roughly" located. We passed through many small towns along the way and were very happy with our introduction to some of Ireland's beauty. After a few wrong turns and inaccurate guesses about where we were, we were most pleasantly surprised when we arrived at our destination. The countryside around the cottages was breathtaking and the hosts were most accommodating. A walk around the area the next morning was beyond beautiful. All of the photos and descriptions in the listing were accurate but the actual experience of being there and taking it all in was off the charts! We stayed in the carriage house with it's little stove in the alcove providing warmth and ambiance to further accentuate the charm of our home away from home. Our friends stayed in the cottage and we likewise enjoyed the comfort of their place and the view from their living room. Everything was clean and well-maintained. The pets were delightful and provided us some consolation as we left three dogs at home. The driving was confined to one person and never having ridden in the backseat of a car going down the opposite side of the road (by U.S. standards), he had to put up with a lot of muffled noises coming from passengers. There is no lack of breathtakingly beautiful places to see along with some significant historical sites that are close by. We took daily trips to towns and sites nearby, ate lunch while out and about and enjoyed coming "home" to cook a late dinner. Having an herb garden outside the door of the cottage and being graciously furnished with fresh salad fixings and eggs by our hosts was a real plus. It was easy to shop for groceries, cooking utensils, etc. in the rentals were just fine, and the meals tasted terrific after a days outing. If you want a real treat for yourself, see if the "pop-up" restaurant on the premises is open. You will be in for one of the best meals around! It was very easy to get attached to the surroundings and people at Dunworley Cottage. I would highly recommend this rental to friends, relatives, and anyone else who would listen. We had the trip of a lifetime and the comfort of a true home away from home.

Hale and Hearty Irish Getaway...Time out of Time.

We vacationed with another couple. One couple stayed in the coach house and one in the cottage. We cooked meals in the big kitchen together, yet still had our own houses. The cottage is big enough for a family though. It's comfortable, simple and tasteful.
It was the perfect rustic, laid back Irish experience for us.
The roads in Ireland can be an adventure for folks accustomed to right-side driving on wide roads with actual shoulders!
But once you get to Dunworley it feels like you've stepped back in time. (But you can still get on the internet!)
There's a wonderful herb garden right outside the door, and Gilly gifted us with fresh salad greens and eggs....tender purple topped broccoli too.
You might get a visit from friendly dogs, and a sweet cat. There are chickens in the pens and swifts singing in the hedgerow. Cows dot the fields all around....and wildflowers pop out of ancient stone walls.
We walked the headlands...and IT IS BREATHTAKING. Bring a sweater! Windbreaker too! Or wear a long Jane Eyre dress and gaze pensively out to sea as the wind tousles you dramatically. Then lie back on the tenderest pillow-bed of wild grass and listen to the the waves crashing below and the relentless wind blowing your mind. Start writing your book.
The ocean road views are plenty magnificent in these parts, so much so that I didn't feel a need to see the Ring of Kerry again.
There is a beach nearby, if you dare. I was cuddled in sweaters, but there were still some boys having a swim! I went down to watch the dramatic changes in the tide morning and afternoon. This is no pansy Florida beach!
The owners are the sweetest. They are helpful but never intrusive.
Oh and, ask Gilly about her "pop-up restaurant".
Weather didn't allow for local seafood so we requested roast chicken and it came with stuffing, potato-cakes, fresh-picked Amazing asparagus, wondrous sauces and more...all served in a candle-lit greenhouse dining room with Jasmine vines trailing overhead.
It was a one of a kind dinner experience....simple fresh food..divinely prepared.
Afterwards we just walked home!
We enjoyed day trips to Kenmare, Kinsale, Drombeg Stone Circle, Baltimore, Clonakilty and just following our noses to amazing views, and Irish pubs of course!
It would have been cool to stop at The English Market in Cork on the way, but we made do just fine in the small towns nearby.
This trip was a perfect combo of dramatic stark beauty as well as soft green pastures.
We Loved it!

We were fortunate to find this lovely location on VRBO. It is quite remote but close enough to Clonakilty to make shopping quite accessable. Although the directions were a little confusing once we found our way it was well worth the effort. The location is in a farming area but within a 5min walk of the most beautiful rugged coastline and beach area. There's lots to do including, walking, touring, surfing (if you're so inclined) and swimming. The views were spectacular even from our accomodation: panarama of a valley on one side, Gilly's chickens on another and don't forget the cows that lazily walked by the window. Gilly and Richard were so friendly and helpful, they truly made us feel at home. Our accomodation was very comfortable and well maintained, making our stay pleasurable. We would and I have already recommended this accomodation to friends and family and we would return in a heart beat. This was truly a highlight of our trip to Ireland.

Delightful Experience - In Every Way!

June '10 - I'm renting Dunworley Cottage for the 2nd year in a row (8 wks. in '09 & 5 wks. this yr.) & have been anticipating my return since I left last July. The description of the Cottage & the surroundings is thorough & accurate; the photos depict the Cottage very well (only wish there were more photos of the entire property so you could see what you're missing); the Cottage was/is exceptionally clean, well maintained & if anything goes wrong the owners respond immediately. The owners are delightful as are their children & every question/concern I've had is answered completely & with honesty & warmth. Dunworley Beach is literally a stone's throw from the property, which is incredible to walk, swim in (bring a wet suit if you can - the water's cold) or simply view. You can enjoy lots of hill climbing in the area & if you're into cardio walks you can do that too on the surrounding country roads (I'd suggest bringing a reflective vest). The co-op grocers is 5 mins. away & everything else you need/want is within 15 mins. My husband & I enjoy relaxing, driving around the countryside to snoop & get to know the area, we delight in meeting & getting to know the people, and the weather has been incredible for doing all/none of that. I've enjoyed the local leisure centre (health club) & am taking private Pilates classes this yr. We enjoy road bowling, which is an Irish sport enjoyed mostly in Cork & Armagh & you can usually find a "score (competition) anytime during the spring & summer (ck. the newspaper). As far as restaurants are concerned we've thoroughly enjoyed An Sugan (a local restaurant in Clonakilty - I love their black pudding stuffed chicken breast), Deasy's Harbour Bar & Restaurant in Ring (en route to Clonakilty) is fabulous with incredibly fresh fish & a very good wine list (not cheap, but really worth it), and earlier this week I went to dinner at The Pink Elephant in Kilbrittain, which was delightful, relaxing & which had an incredible view over Courtmacsherry Bay. All in all, everyone, I HIGHLY recommend staying at Dunworley Cottage, in either of their accommodations, as you'll feel right at home with the warm welcome, the sound & friendliness of the family & animals (Pinklepurr is my favorite), the great organic treats from the garden that are occasionally & grateful shared, and the overall atmosphere or relaxation and welcome I've felt from Day 1. I hope you will visit here (as long as I can still come myself)!
