A gem of an apartment
We are a Wisconsin couple in our 60s who wanted to try the SF-Berkeley area as a new location to settle in. As part of this experiment, we sampled six short-term rentals in as many months. We thought this apartment had the others beat, hands-down. We rented it for the month of June. For us, the kitchen is most important. This one turned out to be very well appointed in every detail. The appliances are first-rate, as are the cookware and utensils. It's so well-supplied we could have been home, and was great for the daily full-scale cooking we did. The kitchen opens to a good-sized, comfortable living room stocked with books, puzzles, DVDs, etc., including a large HDTV with premium channels. A picture window looks out onto lovely plantings and greenery. In fact, fruit trees and flowers in bloom, so characteristic of Berkeley, surround the entire house (the entrance reminded us of Hawaii). The second bedroom, with its own WC and shower, we chose to use as our office. It was well-lit, had WiFi and a useful desk. Beds were quite comfortable and furniture was all of good quality. We particularly liked and made good use of the separate laundry room.
A walking/biking path runs near the house. We took some nice strolls along it to the local market areas on Hopkins St for our provisions: local newspapers, coffeeshop, a wonderful fish/meat shop, and fantastic produce at the Berkeley-famous Monterey Market. (The apt has a grill in the backyard that we were welcome to use.)
Sometimes we roamed eastward to the university and to Berkeley's 'gourmet ghetto' of restaurants. But since we brought our bikes, we also took advantage of interesting neighborhood rides to the north and south. Parking our car was no problem - we used the driveway or sometimes the street. And the Bart station a block away was really handy; it took us into San Francisco in 20 minutes.
The owner's sister and her husband, our next-door neighbors, were as invaluable a source of help and local information as was the owner Scott himself. They were all friendly and generous but completely respected our privacy as well. What a warm introduction to neighborhood life in Berkeley this apartment was for us. Scott, a realtor himself, has put his heart into the place and has thought of pretty much everything a visitor might want.
