A Family Holiday

Family Holiday Cornwall
Review Submitted: August 4, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
We recently returned from a 3-generation family holiday in the L' Orangerie. An excellent time was had by all and it far exceeded our expectations.
We found the house to be very clean, excellently equipped and furnished; including toys, games and DVD player for children of all ages.
Day time we visited Falaise, Caen, Bayeaux, Arromanche, Pont d'Ouilly and much more. Night time we relaxed in the comfortable surrondings of the house and well maintained garden.
Andrew and Jeanette were very welcoming and provided lots of information about what can be done locally. We appreciated their hospitality and it was nice to return after a long day of sight seeing, to English speaking proprietors.
Our holiday passed too quickly and we would love to stay longer in the future.
We would happily recommend this exquisite property to all.
Owner's Response: Mark and his family were a joy to welcome to our property.

Andrew and I appreciated the comment they made as they left, which was that at the end of their day siteseeing, they would all describe their return to L'Orangerie as "going home", which is just the ambience we seek to achieve inside the house.

On their last night, they sat out in the garden until 10pm, and were rewarded by one of our spectacular sunsets across the valley. They also commented on how nice it was to be able to watch all the pretty little birds feeding from the coconut feeder by the house.

They said they would have liked to stay longer, and we very much hope to see them all again. They enjoyed all the facilities of the house and gardens, and they left it in an immaculate condition. If I could rate these (and my previous) guests to assist future owners, they would surely be 6/5.

Kind regards

Jeanette

Autumn at L'Orangerie

Alan and Valerie Preston, Lancashire, England
Review Submitted: November 9, 2009 Date of Stay: October 2009
Andrew and Jeanette proved to be the warm and welcoming hosts that our correspondence had suggested.
L'Orangerie was everything that the website had described. It did not disappoint. The property is in a stunning location in Suisse Normande in the valley of the river Orne. The area has many good walks, full details of which were provided by Andrew and Jeanette in 'take with you' laminated leaflets. They also provided copious information on the other activities and attractions and, more importantly, restaurants in the area, with personal recommendations.
L'Orangerie was clean and beautifully maintained. The layout worked well for our party of twelve with it's seven ensuite double/twin/triple bedrooms. There was a sufficient supply of hot water for showers etc. The kitchen was well equipped for self catering with a large adjacent dining room. The log fired stove in the large lounge area was much enjoyed although the central heating is more than capable of coping with the cool of autumn.
Our party thoroughly enjoyed our one week stay and are looking to return next year. There is still much to see and do in the area. We can certainly recommend L'Orangerie.

A Great Holiday

5 couples Manchester, NH 03104 USA
Review Submitted: October 31, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2009
A group of us (5 couples) stayed at the L'Orangerie the end of Sept. this year. It was a delightful holiday. The house itself is beautiful and very well equipped. There was plenty of room for us all to gather in the living room, to eat together in the kitchen and in the dining room. The bedrooms and baths were roomy and comfortable. The setting lovely. The owners, Jeanette and Andrew, became our friends. They were extremely helpful with regards to places to see, things to do and places to eat. And they cooked a delicious meal for us at the end of our visit. It was a 5 minute drive to a small village with a wonderful bakery for croissants and baguettes. We went almost every morning. It was a 15-20 minute drive to Falaise with shops, restaurants and a wonderful history to explore. Caen and the D-Day beaches are 40-60 minutes away. If we were to return to Normandy at some point, I would definitely stay at the L'Orangerie again.

'We had a lovely time at the gite. It was spacious and comfortable, with all our needs catered for. It is in a beautiful area with lots of things to do and see. And our hosts looked after us very well indeed. We would highly recommend it.'
Owner's Response: This group of six should have been eight, and we hope that the two who were unable to join them this year, will come back with the rest in the future.
It was gratifying to know that the efforts we went to in providing a 'lactose free' meal for one of the guests were really appreciated (we researched in advance and learnt a lot about milk additives). We hope to see everyone again in the future, and thank them for their kind feedback.

Fantastic palce to stay

Charming! Oxfordshire, UK
Review Submitted: September 13, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2009
I took a group of 16 to this property recently and it could not have been better. The owners were so helpful, before we went and while we were there.

This was a school group and we arrived late afternoon. Andrew and Jeanette had prepared the place to give us maximum comfort and had been extremely thoughtful about it all. By prior arrangement they had made a superb meal which they served to us in the dining room. It was the best French meal we had during our stay in France! I thoroughly recommend it especially as they tried and succeeded in producing French cuisine that was enjoyed by all.

They were never intrusive but always happy to help and as group leader this helped me hugely.

The house is wonderful- living area just as it is in the pictures and very comfortable. Bedrooms and ensuites were ideal and everything has been thoughtfully provided to make a safe and relaxing stay for children and adults. The property was immaculate, clean and very well maintained. Facilities and equipment in the kitchen perfect- a good cooker and so on. It is all so tastfully done- lovely duvet covers and furnishings.

The area is peaceful and there is lots to do locally. Having been to Normandy many times we did tend to do the things we knew. Falaise is close by and we enjoyed the town and the chateau; M.Martin's goat farm at La Saffrie is about 50 minutes drive but well worth it and of course there are many many local attractions which we did not do this time.

Highly recommend- a true delight.

L'Orangerie - Large 7 En-suite Bedroom Self Cateri

Don't use one Surrey, England
Review Submitted: August 31, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
We thought the property was excellent value for money with plenty of space, lots of ensuite good sized bedrooms and a lovely wide open lounge area with an impressive fireplace.

The enclosed garden suited our young children and the location was quiet and tranquil.

We used our time to travel to see the D-Day beaches as well as the Bayeaux Tapestry with easy driving from the house.
In all we thoroughly enjoyed our time and Andrew and Jeannette were excellent hosts.
Owner's Response: This family were just 3 adults and 4 young children, and they absolutely exemplify how although L'Orangerie is a large property, it is still very suitable for smaller groups who like space (after all, it is why we purchased it for ourselves in the first place, and we are just 2). They were private people, but they appreciated a daily printout copy of the Met Weather forecast, so they could plan the best activities for their visits - making the most of all the tourist information available to them at L'Orangerie. We would be more than delighted to welcome them again.

Lovely place to stay

Excellent place for a group holiday. We stayed as a family group - lots of different ages - and it suited us perfectly. Very spacious and well-equipped. Extremely friendly and helpful owners living next-door.Good area with lots to do and see. Would definitely recommend it and would return.
Owner's Response: We would be delighted if Liz and her family returned. The younger family members loved the playhouse, we were able to take a group of adults to a local (small) calvedos producer, to buy some veritably authentic 'home brew' and meet the kittens. We are very pleased they chose to come to L'Orangerie.

The perfect base for classic car club holidays

TVR fan Kent
Review Submitted: July 22, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
We recently returned from a family get-together at L’Orangerie. A good time was had by all. The property was perfect for our group, as those like my Mother and Uncle in their young 80s could stay in the downstairs bedrooms, and us more sprightly 40 somethings were upstairs.

We found the house to be very clean, excellently equipped and furnished, with lots of information prepared by Jeanette and Andrew about what can be done locally – in fact their ‘tourist information’ cupboard was probably as well stocked as the local Tourist Board!

We mainly dined at the Orangerie, as it was too nice to leave (and my relatives are great cooks). The local baby Kestrels were just learning to fly from the top of the priory ruins next door, and we were treated to wonderful daily acrobatic displays. In the mornings, my cousin Mike (a Tai Chi instructor), had the pine martin family that visits (early) throwing their left over cherry pips at him from the tree. The hawks fly in such abundance, you can see them all the time – one is nesting in the trees in the Orangerie’s small woodlands, so we had some really good sightings.

The Suisse Normande could have been tailor made for touring in our classic TVR, and we are thinking about how we can bring the TVR car club over next year for the classic Le Mans Race in June. The huge lounge, loads of comfy chairs and log fire will be perfect for groups of friends to gather around for a drink after a great drive. The locals hold a hill climb once a year on public roads. I plan to come back with a few cars and enter.

Visits to the local markets at St Pierre sur Dives and Falaise brought lots of food shopping opportunities (sausages made with Calvedos; Roquefort; Wild Boar; Myrtiles – even Donkey to name a few) and our trip to the landing beaches at Arromanches made for fun days, but best of all was the time afforded to us to catch up with all our family stories, in the relaxed surroundings created by the very helpful and friendly owners, Jeanette and Andrew.

The holiday passed in a flash – next time we will stay for a fortnight if at all possible. We hope to bring even more of our family together in the lovely house and gardens, as there was plenty of space for us all and more. We didn’t have any young children in our group this time, but there was clearly plenty for them too. We happily recommend this lovely property to all.
Owner's Response: My thanks to Craig for his review. It is true that the wildlife locally really did put on quite a show during the week of his stay - the kestrels are still flying from the top of the Priory, and the Pine Martin family has definitely taken up residence locally.

It was good to know the time spent organising all our tourist information into sectioned folders, and the investment in books of local interest was helpful, as we are aware there is so much to do so it is important our guests can be well informed - should they wish to go out and about. Craig was particularly interested in the D-Day information. When he returns, I hope he has time to fit in a visit to the privately owned "Musee de la Bataille de la Poche" in Falaise, as often there is an opportunity to meet with the owner and collector of this hugely impressive private collection.

We would very much welcome the TVR and its owners back, and many more like it. Craig is right that the Swiss Normand is a fantastic location for driving classic cars around the hills and valleys.

We look forward to seeing you all again soon. Kind regards Jeanette & Andrew.

Wow ! What a place

Lesley & Co Reading, Berks, England
Review Submitted: July 7, 2009 Date of Stay: October 2008
The house has been extensively refurbished throughout. There are 7 bedrooms, all very spacious, 6 have en-suites. The bedrooms have been furnished to an excellent standard, there is a bedroom with 3 single beds which we called the "3 Bears room". The living area was huge with a fantastic fireplace, which is great for the colder months. There is more than enough seating in the living room. The kitchen is well equipped and spacious. The dining room is able to accommodate everyone. There is more than enough room to park 7 cars, the grounds are very well kept. The views of the Chateau and the ruins are beautiful. The valley in the autumn is amazing with all the different colours of leaves. The house is an excellent base for visiting Caen, Falaise, Clecy and not forgetting the D-Day beaches. There is just so much to do in this area that a week is just not long enough. Jeanette and Andrew are such perfect hosts ensuring that everything is just right for your stay in their wonderful house. We enjoyed it so much we are going back for the New Year, I have recommended it to a couple of friends but I beat them to booking the New Year.
Owner's Response: We are very much looking forward to welcoming Lesley and her group of family and friends back to L'Orangerie this New Year, and we are confident that they will add further happy memories to their existing Suisse Normande experiences. In particular we recall they had a number of great dinner party games whilst here last time (including their Black-tie event) so L'Orangerie will provide them with a perfect location in which to welcome in 2010, and we know they will love seeing the very French tradition of decorating Xmas trees outside in the gardens, and the prettily decorated local towns. Their kind comments are very much appreciated. Jeanette & Andrew

Christmas at L'Orangerie

Mike & Sandra Burland,Cheshire,UK
Review Submitted: June 18, 2009 Date of Stay: December 2008
We thoroughly enjoyed a very atmospheric Christmas and New Year in the spacious, warm and well equiped house in its beautiful, private setting.

L'Orangerie was very well prepared by the extremely welcoming owners, and their attention to detail and thoughtfulness was evident throughout the house and grounds, even extending to organising the Christmas tree and gourmet goose for us!

The large, enclosed garden provided ample room for children to burn off energy, whilst parents could keep an eye on them within the warmth of the house. The setting in the very attractive Orne valley gave the adults all the exercise needed to replenish appetites!

We indulged in the delights of the excellent boulangeries, patisseries, delicatessens and market stalls of Falaise. The dramatic setting of the chateau and old town gave us more invigorating fresh air, exercise and time to contemplate the dramas visited on this historic region.

We have no hesitation in recommending this house to friends and family and we are now looking for another excuse to gather at this fabulous venue.
Owner's Response: Mike and Sandra's kind comments reflect exactly what we seek to achieve at L'Orangerie.

We tend to have large groups of family or friends, often celebrating a special occasion, or using their holiday as an opportunity to come together from all parts of the world.

We have tried to cater for all ages, with something for everyone. The more mature enjoy the history and setting - so we have many interesting books to read on the subject, whereas for the younger members of the group, we have all the space they could ever need to run around (inside and out), and lots of toys with which to play.

We are always happy to organise some extra special things in advance of our guests arriving - Mike and Sandra had over two weeks, and they decorated the house (throughout) with splendid Christmas style - draping holly (harvested from the garden) around the beams, and lavishing the rest of the house with garlands and cards. The tree we organised was particularly grand, as with 5 metre high ceilings, there is plenty of scope for scale (not quite Leicester Square). This year's guests have requested that we decorate the tree and house on their behalf - which is no trouble at all for us. They are returning to us, having spent Halloween half term week at L'Orangerie in 2008.

Every season in the Suisse Normande has its own charm, and as Mike and Sandra's review reflects, the house in winter is warm and welcoming (particularly the log fire).

We do go out of our way to try and make the property the best it can be, and we find that often, just a little extra help can make all the difference - particularly based on our good local knowledge and contacts. It is a pleasure to have feedback that we have created an environment in which discerning people can have a memorable holiday, for all the right reasons.

We very much hope to welcome Mike and Sandra back as our guests again in the near future.
