About Gwen Croft

I moved to Asheville after living in NYC for 11 years, Originally from Chattanooga, TN, I needed to come home to the south - but not just 'anywhere' would do after the Big Apple. After doing a lot of research and visiting Asheville a number of times, I knew this would be my home for the rest of my life.

Gwen Croft purchased this apartment in 2011
Why Gwen Croft chose Candler

After living closer in West Asheville, I decided I really wanted to experience the meaning and have a closer relationship with the mountains. I had been looking for the right property for a couple of years. This one just knocked my socks off the minute I saw it. The air felt clearer, my spirit felt lighter - it just felt like a place that I could share with friends, but enjoy solitude.

What makes this apartment unique

The mountains have their own personality. Their 'mood changes daily, sometimes hourly. Sometimes the sky is clear and the sun reveals every nook and cranny with its clear light. Other times, especially in the mornings or after a rain, interesting shapes of fog and mist hang over the mountains. It's just a delight to experience the subtle yet perpetual changes the mountains provide.

We chose this property based on the owner's description and the reviews and we were not disappointed. The views were absolutely stunning and we looked forward each morning to seeing how different it was from the day before. Although it was colder than we were hoping for and we didn't get to spend as much time on the deck, I'm sure it is delightful to be able to sit and enjoy a drink in the fresh mountain air. The location seemed a little out of the way at first, but we found that navigating the area was actually very easy and spent most of our days traveling the area and falling in love with Asheville and Western North Carolina. We found the apartment as described and although the kitchen and dining areas are quite small they met our needs and we enjoyed having several meals in the comfort of the apartment. The reclining loveseat was wonderful - after hiking or sight-seeing all day, it was such a joy to come back, turn on the fireplace and sit back and relax. Gwen was concerned about our needs and was always just a text message away. When we talk about our trip, we definitely tell our friends and family that this was the perfect place for us and that it would be our choice when (not if) we return to Asheville.

I wanted my one week of vacation to be a respise of sorts. I had an expection in my mind according to what I had read in the ad and the reviews. When I got to the apartment it was nothing like what I had expected, It was so much more, The views were breathtaking and they did change continually. The property is beautiful with trails to walk. The bedroom I slept in has the fireplace with the chair and a half in front of it, a place you can forget about the world and your worries. Actually everything about this place has done that for me.The bed and the beddings were wonderful. I have taken over 100 pictures and plan on making a scrapbook. So take your camera. Everything you need is there but if by chance there is something you may need, Gwen (the owner), is most gracious to help you with anything. She is what you want in a property owner. I will be back and I have already suggested to some family members to visit this wonderful property for their vacation. THANKS GWEN

The pictures and descriptions of this property matched what was described. It is a nice weekend getaway. It is relatively close to downtown Asheville, grocery stores, restaurants and shopping. The view of the mountains was breathtaking. I loved that I was able to wake up and see the beauty of nature and not city buildings. Location was great. Far enough to enjoy the wilderness yet close enough to enjoy the surrounding areas.

>>>>> Tips for people wanting to rent this property <<<<<<
* Bring your own towels. I found that the towels provided didn’t have the “fresh clean linen” smell or feel.
* People will allergies should definitely bring your allergy meds. I had problems with my allergies inside the house.

The 2 problems I had with my stay are the cleanliness of the apartment and the lack of paper essentials. I found some of the dishes were not completely clean. The silverwares and a coffee mug had food stuck on it. The TV stand had a film of dust and the inside of the fridge had crumbs/sticky film spots. There was a lack of toilet paper, tissue and paper towel. The rest of the apartment was clean, but after speaking to Gwen about the cleanliness concerns, I don’t really know if it was cleaned completely before I arrived there. My overall experience with Gwen was average. Although she stayed above us, didn’t really hear (despite footsteps early in the morning) or see her at all. As a “neighbor”, she was nice and considerate (she left the drive way lights on at night for us). She was very helpful during the pre-rental process. As the “rental owner”, I was dissatisfied with the lack of positive responses when confronted with the issues/problems that I had during the stay. Each issue was met with justification of the problem, as opposed to acceptance of criticism/concern.
Owner's Response: I appreciate the great things Angel said about my Vacation Rental. It does have an outstanding view and is a spacious, yet cozy apartment.

However, please don't feel like you need to bring your towels, worry about cleanliness or paper products. My mother had passed away the day before Christmas and I had not intended to rent it. My regular cleaner took the week off between Christmas and New Years. I cleaned it myself and did the laundry, so obviously I did not give it my full attention. It was a rough week for me and I was trying to keep my mind off of what I was dealing with. I apologized profusely to her. I can certainly guarantee future guests will not have any problems like this in the future.

Me and my wife stayed two week nights. Everything was in excellent working condition. We cooked breakfast and used the grill for steak! Occasionally we could hear someone walking around upstairs but it was very infrequent and did not bother us. I would defiantly recommend this place and look forward to staying again!

Wonderful Asheville stay

We really enjoyed our time here. Despite inclement weather for a couple of days, the vacation rental kept us warm and cozy (especially thanks to the warm fireplace in the master bedroom). The view from the front porch is amazing. It started to get really chilly, so we had limited time on the porch--but would definitely be enjoyable in the late spring, summer and early fall. We really enjoyed the lay-out of the home and the close proximity to hiking, downtown Asheville, horseback riding and kayaking. The kitchen is small for any major cooking, but just perfect for a vacation getaway. The owner was great, giving us directions before arrival and welcoming us when we arrived. Even though we shared the same house (her living quarters were above us), we could hardly hear one another. I definitely want to come back again! Oh and on our last day we saw a wild turkey--quite the fall treat!

Owner's Response: Hi Jessica, thank you for the great review. I'm so glad you enjoyed your visit - even with Sandy spinning off some of her rain and wind on us. Please come back in the spring/summer/fall so you can enjoy the grill, deck and view even more!

Spectacular Views

My parents and I stayed here for three nights. We thoroughly enjoyed the fall leaves from the porch and spent almost all the time we were at the apartment not sleeping out there. I heard the dogs barking only once the entire time we were there and that was because my parents got them riled up when they passed by their home when they went for a walk. We did not hear dogs any other time and slept in easily each morning until 8:30 or so, which for me is very late. Speaking of sleeping, both beds are very comfortable. I would like to know what kind of mattresses those are and I liked the pillows too which I have a terrible time finding anything I like at my own home. As I write this I wish I had bothered to look and see what they are. Maybe Gwen will tell me when she reads this review :-). Just one more thing I want to add. I looked at all the VRBO listings available in and around the Asheville area several months in advance and this was the only affordable property with the spectacular mountains views. We would stay here again when we are in Asheville.

Owner's Response: Amy, Thank you so much for your great review. I did hear you all laughing a few times and it really made me happy to know you all were enjoying yourselves so much. As soon as my current folks leave, I check the mattress and pillows for you. Thank you again and I really hope you all will come back another time! Warmly, gwen

Not Quite What We Hoped For

2 of 5
Submitted: September 30, 2012 Stayed: September 2012
We had booked a 5 nite stay here, but left after 4 due to the following issues. Upon arriving we could detect a musty odor, strongest scent in the MBR/Bath area. Our clothes hung in the closet amid household clutter. A hanging device to absorb moisture in the closet began to leak an oily residue. Gwen said none had ever leaked before and thought this a better alternative than a de-humidifier due to a noise issue. The bath had dark stains on the tub floor, many dark grout lines in tub surround, dark baseboard next to tub, a shower curtain liner with numerous black moldy patches, no place to hang your towel after bathing. The chair and a half in MBR is a very tight fit for 2 to relax and watch the only TV in comfortably. Then there are the BUGS which come out mainly at night. Gwen said "we're in the mountains and nothing she could do about it." After nabbing 25 plus bugs most in BR/BTH, I stopped keeping my stick count tally. Most appear to be a cricket/grasshopper relative? We have a quarterly exterminator visit at home to deal with SC Palmetto bug issue. We think this could solve the issue of mountain bugs too. You do hear Gwen moving about on the floor above, which is to be expected. This might be an issue if you're a light sleeper and like to sleep past 7ish in the morning. The porch offers a beautiful view and it's lovely to listen to the nocturnal sounds of the forest. On occasion one can hear trucks & motorcycles from the highway below. What puts a damper on using the porch is the numerous yard dogs in the surrounding homes. One morning we were awakened at 6:15 with closed windows. An evening meal had to move inside when it became too annoying. Gwen appears to be a very nice lady. She was gone much of the time during our stay. We could always contact her by phone. She saw us loading the car a day early & we spoke. We first told her we're leaving due to weather, then decided to be truthful & tell her some of our issues. We did not mention all of the above to her. She offered a nite's refund, which we did not ask for. She sent a partial refund minus a cancellation fee. We're sorry that this is Gwen's 1st negative review. We do not feel our expectations are overly demanding & this is a truthful account. Our top three concerns were the musty odor/moisture issue, the bathroom & tied for 3rd bugs/barking dogs. It is a beautiful location, minutes to Asheville & numerous area activities. However, due to our experience we would not return to this rental.
Owner's Response: I work very hard to make sure all my guest have a positive experience here and the great reviews I had so far indicate I've been successful. When I realized they were packing their car to leave, I checked in with them. She initially told me that they had done everything they wanted to do in Asheville and decided to just go home (they live about 3 hrs away). After speaking with her for a few minutes that she brought up the issue of the shower curtain - which when I checked did have a little mildew at the top. I've changed it - and have added a towel rack. Re: dampness - we had a few days of hard rain before they arrived. I noticed the dampness and hung the Damp Absorber's up. I'd never had a problem with dampness before. After they left and the rain cleared up, I discovered a hole that had opened up that let water drain down to the outside of the house of their bathroom and closet. I have covered it so no more rain can get in and am getting estimates on repairing it permanently. Any one who owns a home knows that these things happen. She also told me she was a cancer survivor and highly sensitive to environmental issues.

The dogs did bark one night and that usually only happens when there is a bear in the vicinity. It is, after all the mountains and I have no way to control any thing outside my walls. I've rented the unit as a long term rental for a year and a half, and about 5 months as a vacation rental, and there has not been a single complaint. No one else has heard dogs, heard me walking - basically everyone has been very happy here. (note the great reviews I've had so far)

She clearly is a highly sensitive individual. If I had the grass and woods around the house sprayed for the bugs that naturally live there, she would have complained about the chemicals. I've decided this is one woman who would have complained about something.

I did refund her that final night and, again, sorry she had a less than perfect time here. But, apparently it was fine for 4 out of the 5 nights - before they were bored with the rain and went home.

Quiet retreat!

5 of 5
Submitted: September 9, 2012 Stayed: September 2012
Great little property that provided a quiet out of the way place to stay near Asheville. The owner was very responsive, helpful and eager to be sure we were enjoying our stay. But was also good about leaving us alone to enjoy the peaceful location. The views off the porch were lovely. It was great to have a gas grill to use for preparing meals, something the owner recently added at the suggestion of a prior guest. The bed we used was very comfortable and we enjoyed having cable tv and internet available. If you plan on doing a lot of cooking, just know that there is limited counter space in the kitchen and just a few pots and pans. However, if asked, I'm sure the owner would provide whatever you might need. Would definitely recommend this to others as long as they don't mind being just outside of the Asheville area.
Traveler tip - if you love great art - be sure to visit the Grovewood Gallery!! It's a little hard to find in a residential area but so worth the effort!
