Sarah's Haven

Sal & Jen Yorkshire
Review Submitted: October 16, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2009
We woke on our first morning to beautiful blue skies, peaceful wooded landscape and the approaching sound of tinkling bells as a neighbouring shepherd guided his goats through the forest. Sarah greeted us as she brought our sumptuous breakfast to the poolside table. Each day brought new variations on breakfast - griddle scones, Welsh cakes, Spanish omelette, fresh fruit fool, fresh laid eggs - to supplement the fresh fruit salad, breads, home made jams.
Sarah was the perfect hostess - a gentle prescence - who was always sensitive to our needs, introducing us to the local community, taking us to visit places of interest and generally immersing us in the local culture (some of it quite colourful).
Speaking of immersion, we made good use of the lovely pool. I swam for the first time in years. My sister swam every day - good therapy for her arthritis.
There was lots of birdlife; we saw eagles, hoopoes, vultures, cattle egrets, as well as the small songbirds in the olive trees round the pool.
We walked in the forest with the heady smell of eucalyptus all around.
Best of all was getting to know Sarah, her partner Vladimir and lovely baby girl. The dog, Jem, the chickens and the pigs came a close second.
We are already planning our next visit.

beautiful peaceful retreat

Review Submitted: August 18, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
My family and I had such a wonderful time here. The property is such a break from everyday life. We arrived to friendly greetings from the owners and even a lovely bottle of local wine! We were constantly amazed by the effort put in by the owners to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable. The breakfast was amazing and the kids had such a great time in the pool. Will definately be returning and recommending to friends. Couldnt rate the overall experience higher, thank you.
Owner's Response: Thank you all for your lovely review. I look forward to seeing you whenever you need a relaxing break in the forest.. or some sunshine.. or a swimming pool.. or some more breakfast.. see you soon!

our best honeymoon yet!

Ceris Edinburgh, UK
Review Submitted: May 27, 2009 Date of Stay: April 2009
We had a second honeymoon staying at Casa dos Sonhos, and this was so much better than the fancy hotel of our first one!
The old cottage has so much character, and the whole place had all the ideal elements for us: beautiful peaceful gardens equipped with hammocks, fresh fruit and olive oil from the trees, friendly animals, pool and BBQ, miles of eucalyptus woodlands all around, and all done with an eco-friendly approach.
It was clean and well equipped with everything we needed to be self contained, and we were looked after by the perfect hosts - so warm and welcoming but always respecting our privacy, and full of knowledge about the area. They went out of their way to introduce us to locals and take us to beautiful places. The breakfasts were amazing, with homemade jams and eggs from the Casa dos Sonhos chickens. We were able to combine a really peaceful relaxing holiday reading and swimming in the pool, with lots of walks exploring the nearby forests and hills, testing out restaurants in both Portugal and just over the border in Spain, and visits to fascinating old towns and markets.
We would thoroughly recommend this location to anyone, particularly those who like to experience rural life. Would strongly recommend having a car whilst there, so be able to explore the surroundings properly, including visiting Spain.

A Place in the Sun

Padgate Warrington
Review Submitted: March 19, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2008
We stayed in September 2008 and it certainly was "A Place in the Sun" as we know that Sarah, the owner, bought the cottage with the help of the TV programme. The weather during our stay was cloudless for the entire visit. The location in the heart of the forest is stunning. It is so peaceful and relaxing. The cottage is full of character including a bread oven, a log burning stove and the original stone floors. From the large double bedroom there are french doors leading on to the pool area where Sarah served a very enjoyable daily breakfast which including her own produce. There are a wide variety of interesting walks from the cottage and we saw many species of birds, including eagles. When we were returning one evening we heard a noise ahead of us and to our amazement a wild boar shot across the track!!! There are several historic towns nearby such as Marvao, Alegrete and Castelle da Vide where little has changed over the years. We would highly recommend a visit to this area of Portugal.

lovely holiday

Embsay Skipton, North Yorkshire, England
Review Submitted: March 16, 2009 Date of Stay: October 2008
I stayed with my 3 children under 10years old and had a very peaceful time. There are lots of walks in among the oak trees collecting pine cones and then back for a swim in the private pool, sarah is always on hand to guide and feed you her homemade recipes which were wonderful. The BBQ was great with local produce from the supermarket, sat outside listening to all the different forest sounds. We will definately return.
