What a wonderful holiday

We felt at home straight away in this delightful cottage after Louise's friendly welcome, having already had some very helpful email conversations. We were immediately struck by its cleanliness - thank you, Lourdes, you do a brilliant job - and the quality of the furniture, fittings, bedding, kitchen equipment, etc. (Amazing shower - great after a swim.) We experienced both unseasonal heat and unseasonal cold during our fortnight! During the former the cottage and verandah were cool and shady and during the latter we could shut ourselves in and switch on the heating.The pool and the roof terrace with their terrific views were a real boon. After a busy day or during a lazy one, it was easy to relax on the verandah or under the olive tree in the courtyard.
There was ample information to help us get around and decide what to do and Louise and Raoul were on hand to help with any arrangements and questions, also general chat (but only if that's what you like, which we did.) Any minor things that went wrong (a light bulb blowing, for example) were quickly dealt with.
Apart from the accommodation itself, the highlights of our holiday were our two taxi days out with Manuel. We only meant to have one! His English is excellent and not only do you get to cover a lot of the most spectacular parts of the island but, if you want him to, he will tell you all about the trees, flowers, crops, geography, history etc. The restaurants he took us to were inexpensive and provided delicious meals. He lets you decide how long to spend in places and appears as if by magic as soon as you are ready to leave!
We were very grateful on our last day that, as no-one was arriving to stay the following day, we were able to stay in the cottage until Manuel picked us up for the journey to the airport at 5 p.m., giving us an extra day.
This was our first visit to Madeira and, despite reading up beforehand, the island astonished us daily with its colour and landscape. There is so much to see & do in Funchal itself; be aware, though, that you will need to use buses to and from the town unless you are very fit as it's an extremely steep walk. It's nice to stay in a residential area rather than a tourist one, though.
Altogether a fabulous holiday.

clean and well equipped – perfect for two people.

My wife and I spent a very enjoyable two weeks at the cottage last March. The cottage was very comfortable, clean and well equipped – perfect for two people. There were lovely views of the harbour and surrounding hills from the terrace and the lounge area opened on to a spacious outdoor area where you could relax or eat meals. Louise and Raul were very friendly and helpful without being too intrusive. We would certainly recommend the property to our friends and relatives.
We originally intended to hire a car but found that local buses and taxis were cheap and adequate for our needs and, therefore, we didn’t bother with a car. The centre of Funchal is near (about a 15 minute walk from the cottage) but the route is very steep and we were glad to use buses and taxis.

Perfect Setting

We were trilled with the accommodation. Breakfast on the balcony overlooking the harbour was a real highlight. Warm and quiet. The apartment was spotlessly clean, comfortable and welcoming. We left relaxed and rested. Thank you Louise.

We've just returned from a 2 week stay at this fabulous cottage. It is entered via a pretty courtyard with olive and palm trees, hibiscus and bougainvillea tumbling down walls and several seating/dining areas. First impressions were that it was stylish, beautifully furnished and spotlessly clean. Later we experienced the well equipped kitchen, the comfy sofa, the rather amazing shower and finally the extremely comfortable bed. The best bit, though, was the totally private, peaceful, sunny terrace with wrap around views. Then there's the pool - - - .
Louise & Raul are delightful hosts. Although the main house also overlooks the courtyard we didn't feel overlooked and they totally respected our privacy. However, they are there with a smile when you need help or advice. They have very high standards and it's clear that the cottage is a much loved part of their home.
There are 2 ways into Funchal: either along a jacaranda tree lined road or down an attractive quiet residential street with gardens full of tropical trees/flowers. It's steep but the terrace views more than compensate. We returned by taxi or bus, which we also used to visit gardens and nearby villages in our first week. We then hired a car to explore the beautiful island.
So, if you want to stay in a cosy, character cottage in an attractive, non touristy area of Funchal and be well taken care of, this is for you. Just don't go when we want to!

A Special Place

The cottage was perfect and Louise and Raul were the perfect hosts, they made us feel so welcome and immediately at home. The cottage was as described, if not better. Luxurious and quiet and yet within walking distance of Funchal .... and yes it is a steep walk back up the hill! The view from the terrace is amazing and sunny all day! We would recommend a day out with Manuel, the taxi driver recommended by Louise. He was friendly and interesting and took us to some amazing places, we had two fantastic days out with him! Our holiday was perfect ... we saw the island...we relaxed ... and we enjoyed great food. Thank you Louise and Raul. We would definitely return to your special cottage ... why go any where else?

We really try to make our guests welcome and offer exactly what we describe, i think the terrace is one of the best things about this property with virtually a 360º view of The City, Ocean, Harbour & Mountains. After walking back in the summer heat a dip in the pool is probably the best cure! local bus´s and taxi´s can be a good option especially when it´s hot. We are very lucky to find Manuel, he offers a great airport transfer service and it sounds like his tours are excellent too, i´ll have to try one! Once again Thanks so much, best wishes, Louise.

Wonderful property

The property exceeded our expectations, it was beautifully maintained. The upstairs terrace was perfect for an evening drink overlooking the harbour and the pool was great for relaxing by. It was an easy walk downhill into Funchal but we made use of the local buses and taxis for the return trip. The local bar was very good value although this did entail a very steep, but fairly short, uphill walk back..
There are excellent and cheap bus services to explore the island if you do not hire a car.
Louise and Raul were brilliant hosts, we will be back.

Perfect holiday location

We enjoyed very much our holidays at Louise's and Raul's Cottage. It's furnished with taste, even luxuriously. In the kitchen everything is provided and immediatley you feel at home. The hosts are very friendly, helpful and easy going, so don't mind that the cottage is next to the owners house. You really feel on your own, the atmosphere is rather rural even though you are in walking distance to the center of Funchal. Especially at night you only hear roosters, dogs or rather nothing, beside the unavoidable one or two mosquitos. The location with pool and court is also perfect to have lazy days at home.

Amazing 10 days in Madeira

We had a wonderful time in Madeira the cottage was just right, very well equipped and comfortable. We enjoyed being in the residiential area, it was very peaceful and the views from the top terrace were stunning. Louise and Raul are very friendly and informative, recommending amazing drives and restaurants.
We will certainly be back and have recommended the cottage to many friends and I believe one will be booking very soon!
Our holiday photo's have just arrived, and they all bring back fond memories of a holiday that ticked all the boxes, one of our best trips in a while.

We had a lovely honeymoon trip to Madeira this spring. Never having been before, we really enjoyed exploring the rustic towns and villages, and relaxing in Funchal. We would love to be able to come back in the future and enjoy the island again.
We spent 5 nights at this cottage and found it very comfortable ... making good use of the outdoor spaces and the BBQ! Louise was wonderfully helpful whenever we had a question about anything at all. It was close enough to talk into the town (15 mins) but we could never summon up the energy to walk back up the hill home, and took taxis instead! We did hire a car, but I was glad my husband was driving as parking on the narrow and steep roads wasn't something I would be too confident about doing!
All in all, a lovely holiday

Beautifully designed and comfortable cottage

We found this property to be impeccably designed like a luxury appartment within a cottage shell . We found it very well equipped and had everything we needed. The owners were there when we were. Louise was very nice and kind . Due to their discretion and the design of the site we did not feel overlooked. We loved the views from a choice of terraces.
We liked Funchal and other parts of the island we visited . Our 1.2l Renault Clio struggled with some of the hills even in 1st or 2nd gear. Funchal had plenty to offers from the basic restaurants with plain but excellent meat and fish , to the excellent modern 'Riso' rice themed restaurant over the sea. We even got used to the hard sell from the cheaper restaurants. Having escaped the UK just before the snow , we were able to sit out in warm sunshine for coffee , lunch and tea.
We really enjoyed our stay and plan to return.
