Disappointing

2 of 5
Submitted: April 1, 2013 Stayed: March 2013
Initial impression and overall view was of disappointment. Here's why (and I will be fair):

Negatives:
1. The apartment is in need of 'TLC' including painting to freshen things up.
2. Approach to the apartment i.e. lift and stairwells depressing and scruffy.
3. Some of the lounge furniture being old and bulky and not in keeping with what
could be a more modern apartment.
4. Kitchen & utensils need updating and improving (not enough for cooking)
5 Bathroom needs overhaul/modernisation with shower door glides not very
clean and need replacing.
6. Balcony cannot be used (railed off), however very nice view (as described)
from lounge window.

Positives
1. Nice size lounge (for HK) and as said would be much improved with fresh coat
of paint and furniture changes.
2. Decent enough main bedroom (especially now with pictures hung up on walls
during our stay to hide drill holes).

Overall

With a little bit of thought on furniture, freshen up on paintwork, overhaul of the depressing bathroom & kitchen, then apartment would be as described, but at present it has to be a disappointment.
Owner's Response: The guest stayed during Spring time, the humidity in Hong Kong is extremely high that can be continuously over 80% for days. Such humidity will result in wet walls and floors throughout the days.

The high humidity will cause darker traces on the wall paintings; moreover the building is very close to the Victoria Harbors, therefore the humid air with salt content will also intensify the case. Once the weather dries up and humidity goes down, the traces will be gone, and the walls will look clean and white as usual.

The complaint of the wall painting, lift hall, stairwells was probably due to the guest stayed during the most humid days in the year that water even dripped out from the walls and floors.

Inevitably the building itself is an old building and fittings are outdated in the public areas. The public areas are reasonably clean and the neighbors are good and friendly.

Our apartment is nicely furnished.

We have already installed more kitchen utensils. In fact we will put in new utensils from time to time as the cutlery and other kitchen utensils keeps disappearing from our kitchen.

We always make our best efforts to keep our apartment as clean as possible, and we have many returned guests after their first stay, the fact is that we do restrain from using strong chemicals or bleach in cleaning our apartment, perhaps that will give a misconception to the guest as he may not get the kind of “whiteness” as a 5-stars hotel.

Balcony is not including in our listing and access is prohibited by the Building Department.

We stayed here for almost 2 weeks as our 30th anniversary gift to each-other. We were quite surprised initially at how small the apartment was considering it sleeps 6, fine for 2 but wouldn`t like there to be more! We used the 2nd bedroom to store our cases etc as there wasn`t room in the main bedroom. It was also in dire need of a lick of paint and a bit of upgrading in the kitchen but as soon as we saw the view from both the livingroom and the large terrace we were smitten! The location was great, short, interesting walk to the mtr and from there the whole of Hong Kong and it`s islands is easily accessible. We loved every minute and spent lots of time, in the evenings especially, on the terrace looking at the lights and watching the goings on in the street below. We felt safe there whatever the time and there were plenty of places serving good food nearby, including takeaway if you just want to relax on the terrace after a busy day. Would definitely prefer this apartment to staying in a hotel. You feel like a local for a while and have much more space , not to mention that terrace!

Make you feel home

If you are not looking for a luxury hotel but rather a practical, warm and a home-liked place to stay, this is for you. It has what a regular home suppose to have, cooking facilities, washing machine, extra beds for guest, just a typical home in Hong Kong. Location is excellant as bus stop is right downstairs access to Causeway Bay, Central etc. MTR station is in walking distance and there's a Airport bus station right there too. Last but not the least, Rose makes the deal so easy and she even schedules a cleaning service weekly. I would recommend this to all who want to feel the real Hong Kong life with a decent place and reasonable price to stay.

Just the place to stay to explore Hong Kong

We chose this property for a family re-union, 4 adults and one active 7 year old. It was a great location, close to Fortress Hill MTR, food shops, resturants, Victoria park and with fantastic views of the harbour.
We caught the A11 airport bus (stop 17 on the route) which took us to within a few miutes walk from the apartment, very handy.
Apartment compact but with everything you would need to enjoy the stay, felt very secure there with security on duty during the day and pass word entry at night.
Didn't use the cooking facilities as we ate out but felt that the kitchen equipment needed upgrading.
Good place to explore Hong Kong

This apartment has excellent location, taxi stand and bus stops outside the front door, MRT stations a 5 minute walk away. Thus, you can get anywhere you want, any way you want, very easily. Victoria Park right next door. Very interesting neighbourhood, good restaurants, markets all within a few blocks. Having travelled internationally and rented extensively, I would say that the apartment itself is not 'luxury' standard, although it might be for Hong Kong. Harbour view comes as advertised (in website photo), nice to have a cup of tea or drink a.m. or p.m.; you can watch the laser show from your own private viewing area! Main bedroom is fine, 2nd bedroom small, though I would have a hard time imagining 4 people staying there, never mind 5-6 (fold out couch) as the quarters are really quite tight. Rosemarie was a pleasure to deal with, very prompt and responsive regarding all inquiries, and she went out of her way to answer questions/make suggestions that enhanced our stay. If she would invest a relatively minor amount to freshen the place up (a new coat of paint, upgrade kitchen dishware, utensils), this apartment would come closer to the luxury category advertised. The $15 per person charge for new towels is unnecessary. Having said all that, we really enjoyed our stay, and would recommend this place to family/friends visiting HK.

This apartment provides lots of space for HK standards. The Virctoria park around the corners provides all the luxury (trees, swimming pool, terrace) to make it a top location.

Our stay at Whitfield St

Don't panic when you come out of the lift and see the old fire doors, the apartment is really very good! You only have one neighbour and we did not hear them the whole time.

The listing and information given was very accurate. The apartment by Australian standards is small but we expected this given that we were staying in Hong Kong!

The apartment is located between Tin Hau (exit A2) and Fortress Hill on the MTR (easy walk both ways, we did it with kids) or the number 5 bus leaves from the front door. It has a nice local feel being just outside the main Wan Chai and Causeway Bay area.

We fit our two children into the second bedroom. The two beds took up the entire room, but that just added to the fun.

It was great to be able to wash and to have a fridge.

We did not cook but we did take advantage of the local Fairwood and Yoshinoya for take out at very reasonable prices. 7 Eleven and Wellcome supermarkets were very close. The cab drivers all knew Whitfield St. Dry cleaner downstairs if you need one.

The unit was clean and we felt safe there at all times. It was fairly quiet at night, just the usual Hong Kong road noise. The views over to Kowloon across the harbour were very nice.

Rosemarie was a pleasure to deal with and everything worked like clockwork. We would not hesitate to book the apartment again.

So good to have an apartment rather than a hotel room for a week long stay with kids.

Self-catered, quiet, convenient are true to this apartment. Whitfield Apartment is near a wet market yet one
cannot hear the hustles and bustles inside the property. The apartment is not fancy, but well-kept, clean and homey. I would say, it's small, just like any other apartments in Honkkong, but it is well designed and sufficient. The owner, Rosemarie provides information fast and helpful. She checks her emails almost daily even though she's not in Hongkong.
The property has the best location as it is within walking distance to some
of the very fine, international dining houses in Hongkong. Wu Sha Kitchen on Wu Sha Road is just a delight. The area around is safe and we are not afraid to walk even it is close to midnight.
The apartment has a washer, which is very helpful and there's a dry cleaner right downstairs. Free access to the internet is important to us for finding different restaurants.
Causeway Bay is the place you would like to avoid on the weekends. As millions of people would walk or just sit on the streets.
I would recommend this property to my friends, as I already did.
A taxi ride from Airport Express Train, Central to the apartment costs HKD 50.

This apartment is in a great location. It's on Hong Kong Island and is within walking distance of the Tin Hau MTR station. For cheap local eats, you'll find plenty of restaurants, grocery stores, etc. along Electric Road (down the block). Causeway Bay shopping is just a short walk through Victoria Park.

The apartment met our needs. The bedrooms are small (compared to U.S. standards), but were functional. Americans will have to get use to turning on the water heater before taking a shower. The small kitchen (with washer/dryer) was very convenient. Otherwise, the building is secure (has a daytime security guard downstairs), clean and safe. This particular apartment was on the top floor so the street noise wasn't too bad. And the view from the balcony was great!

Convenient and Nice Apartment

This was a great apartment and Rose was a terrific host. She was very easy to work with in making the arrangements and gave us some great tips when we arrived for sites to see.

The apartment was well kept, clean, quiet, safe and orderly. Bedrooms were very comfortable and the 12th floor balcony was a great bonus! Good shower pressure and a huge tv with a wide selection of dvds were a nice touch.

The apartment is in a nice little neighborhood and is relatively close to the train and easy enough to get a taxi. We had more space than a hotel and it was nice to have a little kitchenette to make tea, etc. We spent most of our time out and about exploring the city, but the apartment definitely served as a great base and place to return after a full day.

I would definitely stay there again and recommend it to friends.
