Prince Edward County Farmhouse Rental Photos and Description
Farmhouse, 5 Bedrooms + Loft, 1.5+ Baths, (Sleeps 10)

A brick, century farm house with wrap-around porch, overlooking Lake Ontario as part of By Chadsey's Cairns Winery and Vineyard.

Besides the five bedrooms and a small loft, ( and Harry Potter sleeping area under the stairs) the house features 4 common areas of various sizes easily separated off for noise containment, two wood stoves, hard wood and pine floors, two staircases to the second floor, a large well-equipped kitchen with a traditional tin ceiling.

It is ideal for three to four couples or two families, with a bathroom on each floor (one has a great soaking tub and the other great shower), lots of space and much to do and see.

The 200-year-old farm is fun to explore, with a right of way to the Lake, includes 14 acres of grapes, 4 barns, a brick apple house (now a wine tasting store), a pioneer cemetery, a lovely pear and apple orchard, two long laneways, a creek and the Cairns after which the winery is named.

A complimentary bottle of wine awaits your check in and guests are invited to try a few complimentary tastings in the apple house during their stay. Depending on the time of year, we can arrange for guests to eat among the vnes or on the deck behind the store.

For the adventurous we also offer an opportunity to join our staff for a morning of hand-work in the vineyard.

With three of the province's best beaches just a short drive away,

(Sandbanks and the Outlet 20 min., North Beach 8 min) our complimentary parks pass will be well used during the summer months.

Our house is only 5 minutes by car from Wellington which has many amenities, including a grocery store, convenience store with movie rental, 5 restaurants, post office, artist studios, spa, hair cutting salon, library, museum, liquour store, churches, boat rentals, fishing supplies, art gallery, boat launch, garage, pharmacy and hardware store. it also has a beach and boardwalk, charming central park, and a 9 hole but challenging golf course. (There are several 18 hole courses within 30 minutes of the house)

Of course, you could bike there in just a few more minutes. There are bike lanes on the parkway and many other roads are great for cycling. Bike repair is available in Bloomfield about 15 minutes away.

We have a gas barbecue at the house, television, vcr, and have a small selection of movies available. We have various outdoor games such as table tennis, badminton and croquet, and a couple of soccer nets.

'The County' as we locals refer to our almost island, with a certain confident imperialism, is a hub of creative activity at almost any time of the year. Over 300 artists make up the Arts Council. There is a vibrant live music scene. The Festival Players provide professional theatre during the summer months, and there are several amateur theatre initiatives each year.

Besides our winery there are another 30 (give or take) building a great reputation for fine wines on our unique calcerous limestone sub soils. Every winery, like ours features a range of events throughout the year, and like us, many encourage volunteer pickers to participate in harvest each year.

If you haven't been to a traditional drive-in theatre, ever or in years, then don't miss the County's ever popular example.. a unique cultural experience. Regular cinema is offered in Picton, Belleville and Trenton, all within 30 minutes of the house.

Besides the pharmacy, Wellington, has a chiropractor, physiotherapist, and a dentist. Hospitals in Picton and Trenton are close by in case of emergencies.

My wife, Vida and I moved here from Toronto in 1995 so that I could head up an aboriginal post-secondary institution in the neighbouring Mohawk community.

Vida is an x-journalist and had just become a psychotherapist and I was a recovering provincial politician.

We fell in love with the wonderful sense of history in this old Chadsey farm. The fact that we saw deer as we were driving about the property became part of our seduction.

In 1999 I had to take work back in Toronto and we began planting grapes along with a handful of other pioneers, nvever expecting that we would be come an offical wine making region so quickly.

.

Richard Johnston purchased this farmhouse in 1995

After more than a decade in the business in which Vida was winemaker and accountant and I was in charge of the vineyards and major wine salesperson, we have decided to step back a bit from the obsessive nature of the work. So we have bought a little cottage for ourselves and are offering up our house for guests to enjoy this amazing old place.

Last spring, we were busy redecorating and doing all those little jobs that have taken second place to winery work over the years, so that you can experience it at its best.

We will still be around the property much of the time but will also share some of the work with management staff for the first time

A truly unique experience awaits. Situated on one of the best and most storied farms of the county this is the only home on a winery in the area.

You will have all the comforts of home, while learning about life in the vineyards and will find yourself in the heart of all the great natural and cultural experiences that Prince Edward County affords.

You will quickly see why the Toronto Star refers to it as one of the 10 best vacation destinations.

The house is shaded by mature maples and fir trees and the breeze off the Lake keep the place cool in even hot weather. We gave up our airconditioners and just turn on fans occasionally when the breeze drops.

The house is ideally suited to up to about 10 people because there are places to gather together and places to get some quiet time.

Whether it is wandering through the pioneer cemetery, watching for deer, grouse, wild turkeys, foxes and amazing range of other birds and wildlife, or discovering Ira Chadsey's Cairns, the property alone, will entrance.

We will give you a tour of the winery and the vineyards of course, but we encourage you to put on some grubby apparel and spend a morning with out staff in the vineyard to get a real feel for the 'romance' of grape growing.

Our group of 9 recently stayed at this wonderful home. It had everything we needed and welcomed us the moment we walked in. The house is very large and we never felt cramped. The kitchen is warm and soon became "the spot" to congregate. Richard and his wife greeted us and provided us a complimentary bottle of delicious Riesling and a sampling of their wonderful wines. Shortly after we arrived, we knew it was going to be an annual event. See you next year!

Beautiful Weekend Getaway

We had the pleasure of spending 3 nights with 4 other couples in this beautiful house. Richard and Vida are such wonderful hosts. They arranged for our crew to participate in wine picking one day and they also invited us to a benefit "barn dance" on Saturday that was being hosted by one of the local service groups. The house is beautiful with all the ammenities that a large group such as ours would require. In the mornings it was great to take walks along a tree lined laneway to the back of the property. We even found puffballs that we cooked with our breakfast. The property is nicely located in the west end of the County with many other wineries close by as well as great restaurants in Wellington. Our group has stayed in other houses in the County in previous years, but this was by far the best experience that we have had to date.

Bicycle Base

We recently used this property as a home base for a fall cycling weekend with our club of 9 riders. The house was clean, well decorated and well equipped for feeding a large group. This farm house, built in 1910, has some truly gorgeous hardwood floors, moldings and bannisters, but be warned, the stairs, floors and doors will squeak on a midnight washroom run. The bedrooms were nicely furnished with comfy beds. We also enjoyed the covered porch for lingering over coffee or eating "al fresco".

The property is well situated about 4km from the town of Wellington, ON on Loyalist Parkway (Hwy#33) and close to the bulk of the vineyards on the Taste Trail. There are some good cycle routes from here towards Consecon Lake.

The owner's were friendly and welcoming. They even gave us a right-out-of the-vat tasting of a soon to be bottled chardonnay in the cellar of the wine barn as well as a welcome bottle of Gamay Noir.

Good experience.

Wonderful Stay and Wonderful Hosts

We booked for a week in August; there were 7 of us. We were warmly greeted by the owners and made to feel welcome. We saw deer just outside our window on our first night, a good sign we figured for the week. It was wonderful to stay at a working winery; we tasted and talked about wines many times (the shop is a 1 minute walk up the lane), and had a great time at the barn concert on the Thursday night. The location is excellent - 10 minutes to North Beach, 20 minutes to Sandbanks and to Picton. The house is beautiful, with high ceilings, big windows, and all amenities that you might want.
