Photos and Description of the Antigua vacation house rental
House, 2 Bedrooms + Loft, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 5-6)

Our family bought this colonial house in 1965 and has restored it over the last 45 years. The house, built in 1568, retains old world charm... The house is simply decorated in a Spanish/Guatemalan style.

La Casa del Sol is the former residence of the 16th century Governor of Guatemala. Built around a central courtyard garden, the house has the original cupola, dome ceiling and four foot wide stone walls.

Master bedroom has a double and a twin bed, skylight and Colonial window. Second bedroom is equipped with 2 twin beds, sleeping loft for a child/young adult and fireplace. Additional twin bed available. Comfortable foam sofa in living room provides sleeping for a child.

There are two bathrooms with hot showers. Small living room has cable TV, and there is a large formal dining room.

Self-catering with complete kitchen: gas stove, refrigerator, toaster, coffee maker, bottled water, dishes and cooking utensils. Eat breakfast outside under veranda in full sunlight.

Housekeeper and family on premises available for cooking, laundry, housekeeping at additional cost. Nearby bakery for fresh sweet bread and hot hand made tortillas can be delivered daily. Practice your Spanish with friendly local family.

Relax in a comfortable yet simple home. Tranquil, picturesque neighborhood, yet in center of colonial Antigua. No need for a car, everything within walking distance. Casa del Sol is Case de mi Suenos

Want to step back in time? Spend a week (or more, if you can manage it) at Casa del Sol. The house is an oasis, tranquil and a wonderful way to enjoy the sites of Antigua and the local area. We were four persons ranging from 21 to 54 (US to South Korean to German) and we all LOVED this home! The family caretakers on site are as charming and hospitable as anyone could be, the patio garden is a dream, the home is charming. Personally, it was like a dream come true for me! Recommended without hesitation.

Casa de Sol is a Casa of Dreams

Truly a memorable experience staying in this historic home in Antigua! Casa del Sol radiates good cheer and good memories in the making and will always be my Casa del Suenos!

Don Victor, Dona Maria and family who are the caretakers are very sweet, helpful and charming. The house is like being back in time with modern amenities. We were a total of four guests: two from U.S., one South Korean, and one German; we all enjoyed the experience tremendously.

Antigua is truly a delightful location a first trip to Guatemala. The only problem was that some days we were so relaxed and lazy, we couldn't leave the house for very long! What an oasis! Thanks to the Jickling family for opening up their home.

Wonderful Home in Antigua, Guatemala

We were fortunate to rent this home for one month. The house is most comfortable with a well equipped kitchen and wonderful outdoor patio/garden. Decorations, furniture and overall ambience make you feel as though you have stepped back in time. The family which lives on premises is most friendly, helpful and attentive, while respecting your privacy. They could not have been better hosts.
The house is within easy walking distance of the center of Antigua, some historic/cultural sites, restaurants, bakeries, small stores and other services.
All of this, combined with excellent communications with the owners, made this a most pleasant experience.
Antigua is a wonderful little city and Casa Del Sol is "the" place to stay.
We hope to return in the near future. Thank you

The perfect accommodation in Antigua

Submitted: November 20, 2012 Stayed: August 2012
I stayed at Casa del Sol with my two 77 year old parents, my husband and sister in August. It was perfect. We were terribly surprised when we arrived, as we felt the photos didn't do the place justice, it was so much better. Such a piece of history and the quirks of the place simply endeared it to our hearts. We were there just under a week, and took advantage of the kitchen for a few dinners, and all amenities worked great. The location was ideal for easy access to the core of Antigua, yet was very quiet (mmm, could have had to do with the foot-thick walls). One of the nicest things that was a part of the house was the history tiles, and tracing the "lineage" of the house back through to the mid-1500s.

If you are looking for a private house in Antigua, you can't go wrong choosing Casa del Sol.

450 year old home with much history

We stayed for about 14 days at Casa del Sol. In asking around town many people remember David Jinkling who bought a ruin in 1965 and began restoring it for his young family. The house really has two histories, one of the Jinking who still own it and all the items they collected in the second half of the 20th century, and an early history which includes all the families that have occupied the house since its beginning. Their names are recorded on one of the walls. One feels as if they are living in a museum. A great place to stay if you are interested in old architecture and history. The house is relatively comfortable and has everything you would need for your stay. There is a pretty stone courtyard with lovely plantings. A very nice young family lives on the back of the property and the children keep to themselves unless you invite them into your area. They are very quiet. The house is directly across the street from ruin Capachine. Although not the quietest place in town, anywhere within the old part of Antigua will have a certain amount of noise and traffic. We would stay there again but we just bought a bed and breakfast here so now we have our own house to stay in.

Absolutely everything (photos, description of property, neighborhood location, etc) about Casa del Sol was accurate and, if anything, understated. The remarkable engineering and construction design of those ancient homes results in cool days and warm nights. The pleasant and peaceful interior garden is a meditation unto itself. Kitchen accomodations are remarkable in complete stocking of everything needed to prepare your own meals, snacks, coffee and fruit juices. There were days when I just wanted to stay there and not walk around or shop or take photos because the conditions were so tranquil.
My favorite neighborhood was around the La Merced church, which is only three blocks from Casa del Sol and less hustle and bustle than the central park area. Smaller stores, bakeries, coffee shops, intimate low key restaurants were a daily discovery in this area. I am of Buddhist faith but went to mass twice at La Merced catholic church because it was just so magnificent and it felt good to be with the people that are so devout.
The key factor, however, that made the week the most memorable "vacation" of my life was the resident family. Proud, kind, gentle and constantly attentive they made all the difference. It was so easy and comfortable to be part of their daily life ryhthms that, in the end, they became true friends. All of their advice, observations and recommendations were more than helpful. They put me in touch with the substance and reality of Antigua in a way that cannot be achieved through travel guides.

Great for Families

My three daughters (a preschooler and two teenagers) and I spent an unforgettable month at Casa del Sol (July 2012).

The location is convenient and safe—the house is directly across the street from Las Capuchinas and two doors up from the upscale El Convento Boutique Hotel—Las Capuchinas has a guard on duty during opening hours (9-5) and El Convento has a guard 24/7—so someone is always on the street watching out. My teenage daughters spent much of the month taking Spanish lessons at nearby Ixchel Spanish School and they walked on their own to and from their lessons each day.

The house is also conveniently close to some fantastic restaurants, delis, and bakeries—La Cuevita de los Urquizu is just around the corner and serves traditional Guatemalan dishes. We simply took a big bowl from the house and had La Cuevita fill it with a couple of portions of a main dish and took it back home to supplement our own meal. You can also pick up a roasted chicken and fresh baguettes at the Epicure deli and bakery (across from El Carmen Ruins). Nearly each morning, I’d walk down to Dona Luisa Xicotencatl bakery and restaurant (opens at 7 am) to bring home some of their wonderful yogurt, banana bread, and other baked goods for breakfast (croissants, whole wheat bread, muffins, etc.).

Having Maria and Victor and their two daughters living on the property made all the difference. It’s like a homestay in some respects, but you have the privacy of your own home. Maria truly helped us get acquainted with Antigua—I accompanied her to the mercado the first few days to buy fruits, vegetables, and meats and then learned to do all the shopping on my own. She also helped us tremendously when we needed to see the doctor and get medicine from the pharmacy. Maria always kept the house very clean—what a pleasure to come home from a long day out exploring to find the bathrooms and kitchen in order. Simply having another family nearby helped us feel safe and secure.

When you are in the house, you feel as if you’ve stepped back in time—the architecture is beautiful with one room having a cupola and another a beautiful domed ceiling. The rooms and patios are decorated so nicely with wooden furniture, paintings, ceramics, etc. It’s almost like a museum that you’ve been able to sneak into and spend the night in! My 3 year-old loved playing most of the day in the large garden which she appropriately called “the park.
