Owner's Response: The latest snowstorm that significantly impacted southwestern Indiana was an unusual event. In the 12 yrs. that we have owned the lake house, this is only the 2nd time the lane needed plowing. We spent an entire day calling every referral to ensure the removal of snow prior to our weekend guest arrivals. When mother nature deposited 6 additional in.’s of snow we had the lane plowed again. In an effort to accommodate our guests we did not call each of the neighbors on our lane to share in the expense but paid for plowing of the 1/3 mile lane on our own, not once, but twice.

We were surprised to get a phone call from the guest stating their vehicles were stuck in an area my husband gave specific instructions about navigating. Our response was not to question whether or not they had followed the instructions,
but to immediately offer to call and send out someone to help, which we did. The guests were able to get the vehicles out themselves, unfortunately the assistance had already been dispatched and we were left picking up the expense. My husband also arranged to have sand deposited in the problem area. As with all reported problems, the locks will be investigated, and will be repaired or replaced if necessary.

Regarding the power outage, the power has gone out 3X’s in the past 12 yrs that we are aware of, once when our family was vacationing there. When the guests notified us about the outage we needed to determine if the problem was with our home or an area outage. The guest was unable to discern if the outage was isolated or widespread. We called neighbors, found that the entire area was without power and immediately called the power co., expressing additional concern since guests were lodging at the lake. When the guests announced they were going to leave if the power did not come back on soon, we were in complete agreement. We informed them that we would talk to them the next day to settle on compensating them for that night. I would like to mention that our own New Year’s Eve plans were forgone so that we would be available for further support should our guests be in need. The day prior to the outage, in an effort to alleviate additional stress, we told them to please disregard the usual am check out time and spend a leisurely morning/afternoon before departing.

I am perplexed and saddened that a public forum was used to complain about events that were completely out of our control and for which we made every effort to rectify.
