For This Kind of Money You Should Expect More
For the amount of money we paid to rent the guest house . . . . it didn't meet our expectation.
The house needs repair, upgrading and cleaning.
Unless you like using a stained shower, toilet and sinks, cracked floors, old furniture, and sleeping on a futon bed with blankets that don't fit.
We rearranged the furniture a bit and under the area rug there was plenty of dirt. Obviously the rug had not been shaken out in some time.
Otherwise the pictures represent the property. Surrounding views are great and the house is private and quite.
Owner's Response: As this guest says, the pictures posted do indeed represent the property. Imagine our surprise when we saw this review as we were in residence at the main house throughout our visitor’s stay and the only issue we heard about was one problem with a ceiling fan that we promptly adjusted.
We ourselves are longtime users of VRBO and HomeAway and always extend the courtesy of talking to our hosts directly about issues or concerns—especially when they’re readily accessible. We are sorry that our guests found dirt under a carpet. Living in the countryside does mean that our guests often live as much outside as in, (French doors open onto the large deck that runs the length of the house—people leave them open). This does mean that some of the outdoors does come inside at times—usually it’s just leaves. Our housekeeper says she’ll ensure there won’t be dirt under the rug again. We are incredibly careful to keep dirt in the bungalow to a minimum, but we missed this one spot.
As for the blanket situation—we are unsure of their issue. The bed is queen-sized, and the blankets and comforters we have are queen-sized. If they were unhappy with what was on the bed they were more than welcome to use one of the other blankets and comforters available in the closet—all queen-sized, or ask us for others. As for the quality of the bed itself—it is a top-of-the-line, all-weather, wrapped-core, futon mattress on a custom wood frame. It is amazingly comfortable, good in both hot and cold weather and we’ve never had a complaint about it.
The “old furniture” they mention are antiques and vintage—the pieces are there by design. As these guests may recall when they first contacted us, before they even booked we suggested, given their line of questioning, that they might be more comfortable in a hotel as it seemed to be more in keeping with what they were looking for.
Our bungalow is beautiful, but it is a lived-in house and not a hotel room. Yes, there is a crack in our Saltillo tiles. The staining is from mineral-rich well water (filtered and softened now for a number of years). As for the cost—our price is lower than that of other very private similar properties. We value greatly the guests who have appreciated an eclectic rammed-earth home of character and uncommon beauty in a beautiful and tranquil setting.
