Casa Caracol: A five-bedroom beachfront villa in the Mayan Riviera, on a pristine private beach five minutes from Tulum.

The villa sleeps ten to eleven people, and among its various amenities it has a beachfront palapa with lounging chairs, a balcony with a shade-covered hammock, covered parking for two cars, a large charcoal grill, stereo system, free WiFi, and an ocean kayak. It has a full kitchen with fridge and freezer, gas stove and oven, microwave, and pots, pans, dishes and utensils. All bedrooms are air-conditioned with individual temperature control. Housekeeping service is provided six days a week and laundry service is available. Catering and spa services are available upon request.

Casa Caracol is 60 miles south of the Cancun Airport, five minutes from Tulum, once a great Mayan city and now a destination for great beaches and beachside restaurants.

There are two bedrooms on the first floor. One has a queen size bed, a bathroom en suite, and views of the beach. The second bedroom on the first floor has two twin beds, and looks out at the garden. On the second floor there are three bedrooms. The beachside bedroom has a queen size bed and a small balcony above the beach. Another bedroom has a double bed and a twin bed. The third bedroom on the second floor has a king size bed, and from this bedroom you can see the vast, undeveloped jungle, opposite the beach.

There is a large deck on the second floor that stretches around the house to give views of both the ocean and jungle. On this deck, there is a hammock with a bamboo covering for shade. This deck is a great place to sit down and enjoy drinks and snacks, and to look at the stars at night.

Casa Caracol has a covered carport with room for two cars, and leading up to this carport is a driveway with room for two more cars. On the side of the house opposite the beach, there is a sandy garden with palm trees and aloe vera plants. As you walk towards the beach from this side, there is a large charcoal grill with room to grill more food than you could ever eat in one meal.

There are also various beachside restaurants within walking distance of the house, including a restaurant two doors down where you can sip margaritas on the beach. Next to this restaurant is a little shop with necessities such as sunblock and medicines. There is a famous natural cenote (underwater cave) across the road, great for scuba diving and snorkeling.

Casa Caracol is on the beach of Tankah Bay, a gated residential community, far from the large resorts that dot the shores of the Mayan Riviera. The waters of Tankah Bay are home to a barrier reef, keeping the waves small and providing excellent snorkeling opportunities. Tulum is a five-minute drive from the house, and Xel-Ha is under 10 minutes away. Also 10 minutes away is the Cenote Dos Ojos, which was featured on BBC’s “Planet Earth” series. Although the activities in the area are endless, Casa Caracol is the perfect place to just relax in a hammock and enjoy the ocean breeze.

Why The Owner chose Tulum

We chose to build our vacation home in Tankah because of its quiet, secluded atmosphere away from the large resorts in the Mayan Riviera. It is very close to the historic town of Tulum, yet the only sounds you can hear from the house are of the waves lapping up on the shore and the ocean breeze rattling the tree branches. At night, you can go outside and see countless stars in the sky since there are no lights lighting up the sky.

What makes this villa unique

The house is five minutes from the Tulum ruins, and within driving distance of the ruins at Coba and Chichen Itza. A short drive takes you to the Sian Ka'an biosphere reserve, where miles of sandy beaches are preserved since development is prohibited. We own the lot adjacent to Casa Caracol, so you can enjoy views of the ocean and horizon without obstruction from other properties. Since one of the owners, Sandy, lives just down the beach, you will always be taken care of and she will answer all your questions throughout your stay.

Great location, comfortable house!

My family and I (husband, 11yr old son, 19 yr old daughter) had an amazing 10 day vacation at Casa Caracol. The house is spacious and airy. The view is amazing! Some of the best snorkeling in Tulum is right in front of the house with Casa Cenote right behind it. It was the perfect place to relax, unwind, and enjoy the beauty of the beach. Casa Caracol is really away from it all. When you are ready to explore the ruins are down the street as well as Tulum, Tulum beach, and tons of great shops and restaurants. The house is clean, well-kept and comfortable. I would highly recommend Casa Caracol to my friends and relatives.

Not Tulum!!!

This property, and particularly the ways it is advertised, is quite misleading. The association is with Tulum, which is about 10 miles further to the south, where one does have access to white, fine sand beaches, which is certainly not the case here. There was a rather sparse beach measuring around 20 meters wide, but which once one entered the sea into a rocky bottom that did not make for comfortable swimming let alone walking. As a result, we didn't end up using the house as a beach access at all, but instead drove to beaches (both public and private), that within a 20 mile radius (thankfully, there were plenty of those...)

Second, when it rained--which we had--those rooms facing the sea were inundated with rain water, which could be quite unpleasant. The house itself was, though quite functional, a bit run-down. I would suggest spending a little more for the better rental (in Tulum proper). Perhaps the most telling detail is that this house is on sale (the lot next to it is vacant, which has led to some amount of detritus being deposited on the house's right flank), as well as a number of houses in this Tankah development. It appears to me that this was the result of the property boom of the 2000s, which is now being deflated.

The only bright spot was the woman who we were in touch with, Sandra, who was very affable and sympathetic to our complaints. This critique is certainly not directed against her, but I still would recommend against renting this house (even in Tankah....)

Wonderful vacation house!

My friends and I had an amazing vacation at Casa Caracol in Tulum, Mexico. Casa Caracol was everything that we’d been looking for. With five large, cheerful bedrooms, three bathrooms, and ample living space, there was more than enough room for all of us. Some highlights of the house included waking up to gorgeous ocean views, eating meals on the large deck, reading on the balconies and taking naps in the shaded hammock. At night, we took moonlit swims off Casa Caracol’s private beach. The location of Casa Caracol was ideal. We were on a private road, yet in close range of incredible Mayan ruins, many other beautiful beaches and cloves, and Playa del Carmen: a fun place to go if you're looking for clubs and bars. Casa Caracol provided an idyllic vacation, and we definitely hope to go back!
