Our experience with the property

We had rented this vacation house over the New Year’s weekend (property #391612). The enjoyed our stay in the house; however, the experience with not having our deposit returned ruined our impression from the vacation. We communicated with the owner after having left the house thanking each other. Right after (the very next day) we posted an original nice review of the property (about one month after we have left the property) we received a nasty email from the owner informing us that they will not return our deposit due to “dirty floors and a dirty table”. We had cleaned out the whole house after ourselves, even going so far as to separate glass and plastic from regular trash, putting a lot of time and effort into it. We were not aware that we were also responsible for mopping the floors, and if any spots were missed on the table we are quite certain that the cleaning fee is there for a reason. We were not given any proof in the form of receipts, or any evidence that our deposit was spent to clean the kitchen floor and the dining room table (although we have asked the owner for the proof and/or receipts). Furthermore, the owner stated that he wanted to keep this private and not involve Homeaway, which we think is very shady. Further attempts to contact this owner were unsuccessfull. Our group of people rents out vacation houses every winter season for several years. Thus, we know what is expected in terms of cleaning after ourselves, and we never had any issues with having our deposits returned.
Owner's Response: I respectfully disagree with their analysis of the situation, and will gladly discuss it publicly. Because of their New Year's weekend party our house will not be rented again for a New Year's celebration in the future. There was simply too much abuse of the house and contents, of which they are still unaware, even after I explained it to them in an email, which was not "nasty", but only told the truth, which sometimes may be hard to accept. I'm glad they "cleaned out the whole house after themselves" before I entered and saw it because I would have cried even harder. The dining room table wasn't "dirty" but the surface needed sanding and revarnishing. Spilled drinks were found on the leather living room furniture, all over the floors, on the new TV, the couches in the basement, on the bamboo floor in the large bedroom upstairs, and on the beds and comforters (2 needed dry cleaning). The garbage included cases of empty liquor bottles which filled a large pickup truck (for a 3 day rental).
This was the only time the security deposit was not returned in full. In this case, the entire deposit of 500.00 was retained plus the cleaning fee of 175.00. Our cleaning crew charges 200.00 for routine cleaning between renters, but this was way above and beyond "routine" and I spent many days myself in cleaning the house and contents.
I'm glad they "enjoyed their stay in the house", but I assumed they didn't expect their security deposit returned after I saw how they left it. When they posted a nice 5 star review one month after their visit and questioned why it took so long for their deposit to be returned, I responded with an email explaining my position on the matter. Hopefully, they will be more careful and considerate in their future rentals.
