Nice house - Not so nice owner
Although this house is lovely, the description is not completely accurate and the owner decided to keep $50 of our security deposit accusing us of having damaged a chair. I have asked, very politely, several times for a description of the damage; and my only response was that it was "broken". That's a very broad adjective for damage. When I asked for a picture of the damage and a copy of the repair bill he said that his handyman was able to fix the chair and have it ready for the next renters who were expected the day we checked out. So, there couldn't have been much damage; and, the owner obviously didn't pay $50 to repair it. He still never explain how the chair was "broken". I asked my family, everyone who was with us on the vacation, if a chair had been damaged and all replied "no". I told the owner that we never even moved the chairs from around the table. My last email to the owner was last week and again he has not replied.
I might have overlooked some of the details below and given a better rating had the owner not been so hard to deal with:
The property is NOT wheelchair accessible. I told the owner in advance that our 29 year old son was a wheelchair user. The front entrance has one high step. The only other entrance has two shallower steps. Our son had to request and wait for assistance in entering and exiting. The bathroom door is not wide enough for a wheelchair to pass through. The upstairs bathroom does not have a typical door. It has saloon type swinging doors with a shower curtain. The 1/2 bath is outside.
When we arrived there was a note on the dishwasher stating that is was broken and a new one would be installed on Monday, which it was. Nonetheless, I had to hand wash the dishes for 2 of the 7 day vacation. There was also a note on the fridge saying not to use the ice maker as it clogs. We were to use ice trays. Not convenient for filling coolers. There was only enough propane for one meal on the grill.
The property is NOT a "short walk" to town. You could walk it, but it is about 2 to 3 miles away. Having a home that is truly walking distance to town has always been a selling point for us.
Our family has been renting around the country and Canada for 9 years and I have never had to submit a bad review.
The home is lovely as is the lake, but there are other lovely places to rent which are more true to description and have more co-operative owners.
Owner's Response: We strive to maintain a lovely home for our renters. When items break, we realize it may be an incovenience for our renters but we try to respond quickly to their concerns such as replacing a dishwasher. When renting homes in areas that are unfamiliar, we encourage our renters to ask questions and obtain information about the local areas. While some renters consider the walk or bicycle ride to town a short walk or ride. With all of the technology available today, potential renters can do alot of research on a property before renting it.
We ask for a security deposit to cover the cost when items break, The sole purpose of the security deposit is to ensure we are rerimbursed when items break. From time to time items are broken which a renter may not realize were broken during their stay. This renter believed they didn't break the chair; however, the chair was broken and the renter has been provided with pictures of the broken chair.
Rather than dwell on the $50 repair charge, here is what this renter wrote in our guest book before I returned all of their security deposit quickly except for the $50 to repair the chair.
"We had a wonderful week with our childrenand gran-children Lovely home-perfect shallow sandy lake. We had a great time."
