Most inviting B and B and a Most Uninviting Host

Tara is a lovely property just a short jaunt away from the gorgeous parks and preserves of the Hocking Hills area of Ohio. The entrance to the home is dotted with a few rules that are somewhat understandable (no parking on the grass, no walking on the mulch) , but upon opening the front door the placard stating "Live , Laugh, and Love" seemed inviting until ...I'll get to that. This could have been a delightful stay at this 7 bedroom, four bathroom home , with king beds all but one bedroom and a delightful queen in the last one. In addition there were a few rooms with additional beds in each, a nice perk to say the least. The dining room accommodated our party of 13 , and the lazy Susan made it easy for us to "pass the ketchup." A frig in the kitchen and another in the basement had the potential to make life easy and comfortable as did two separate downstairs playrooms with every accoutrement one could ask for (karaoke, basketball, Pac-Man, pinball, pool and ping pong) to round it off. A playground paradise at least potentially.
Then came the rules and the rules and the rules and the rules. Oh my Lord were there rules. Five picture frames were fastened to the kitchen wall outlining rules our party hasn't seen since middle school. These weren't the typical "Please do not.." rules . These were the rules covering every scenario to escape punishment for violation of the rules. Our host made it clear that there would be harsh financial consequences for violations for putting sanitary napkins in the toilet (minimum of $300) , for failing to clean the downstairs refrigerator, for hooking up your gameboy to his system. Pac- Man and pinball were for a fee, and if your game didn't work there were "NO REFUNDS." He took the time to create a rule book which outlined such rules as non-smoking. Asking guest to not smoke in the home would seem to suffice, but he had to include no smoking by a window, no smoking just a few cigarettes, no airing out the house,( again with significant financial penalty) and deducting $2.00 per cigarette butt found from our $500 damage deposit.). When we called our host during our stay to ask our for a replacement coffee maker as we were a large party, he was quick to ask if we had exceeded our allowance of 13. This rule pertained to an extra fee if we exceeded our allowance and a loss of our deposit if we exceeded our allowance and didn't tell him first. Yes there were cameras. Needless to say , we will not return!

Owner's Response: Tara Lodge is not a Bed and Breakfast and as far as uninviting host...that is for you to decide.....If you do choose to stay at the #1 booked lodge in the hocking Hills, and we hope you do! Our policy's assure each guest the opportunity to enjoy the lodge as much as the guest before them. We do not have a rule book. Our policy's are sent to each customer the day they book the lodge or earlier if requested. At Tara there are many amenities and luxury's you do not find at other lodges. The policy's are in place to regulate safe and respectful use of the amazing variety of entertainment. The above guest (Jacqueline) Did not even write this review...That is what she told me....Her guest who was a smoker did and was upset about the NO SMOKING SIGNS (plural) in the Lodge. Tara lodge has a strict NO SMOKING POLICY that brings a $300.00 dollar deduction from your Deposit or more .... We will KEEP our lodge clean and SMOKE FREE. We do have a sign in our bathrooms not to put Diapers or feminine hygiene products in the Toilets because we have a septic system. In 2009 we had a flood due to a blocked line from this very scenario.... and as far as the question whether there was more than 13 guest...The customer asked for a new Coffee maker. There were 2 coffee makers at the lodge prior to there arrival...one for decaf one for regular. The guest told me they also brought one with them. I found it strange that with 3 coffee makers (even if one was Broken) that with 13 people they would need another so I politely asked how many guest there were. We replaced the Coffee pot within a couple hours. About the fee of additional guest and these other things mentioned I have no clue what she is referring to... You do not lose your deposit for having additional guest. Each undisclosed guest(A undisclosed guest is one that has not paid to stay prior to checking out)and will be charged double the rate if we are not notified just like every Lodge and Cabin in the Hocking Hills. The additional guest fee is clearly stated on the lodge policy. Yes we do have security camera's located on all parking area's..."That is it the Parking area's only" As a lodge owner, businessman and a Customer service person for over 35 years, I feel you should ALWAYS be upfront about policy's with your guest. This customer left the Lodge in very good condition and we appreciate there friends comment and opinion
