The perfect home base for a trip to Acadia

The Birches at Acadia was our wonderful home base for our five-day vacation on Mt. Desert Island in August 2012. Lorie, the owner, was a lovely to work with--extremely personable and communicative. We found the home easily with her detailed instructions and were impressed by the cleanliness and thoroughness. The photos are entirely accurate and the house is stocked with everything you need: ziploc baggies to pack a picnic lunch, board games and movies, the latest magazines, and even a first aid kit (which came in handy after I took a tumble on a bicycle--needless to say, I was very grateful for the kit!).
The house is very conveniently located--just a ten-minute drive to the Acadia National Park entrance and downtown Bar Harbor. This was my friends' and my first visit to Maine and we would stay at The Birches again in a heartbeat. Thank you, Lorie, we had a wonderful time!

A Fantastic Find!

The Birches is an immaculate, cheerful, spacious home located in a a quiet, peaceful neighborhood on Mt. Desert Island. The pictures attracted us, but the reality exceeded our expectations. This is an impeccable home that is obviously cared for. All one's needs are anticipated in advance including kitchen supplies, toiletries, cooking condiments, and laundry essentials. Lori called to make sure everything was going well and communicated well with us before, during and after our visit. We have stayed at a half dozen "homeaway" locations and would rank this home at the top of the list. After a busy day at Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor, there was nothing better than to begin and end our day at The Birches. We hope to return!

Lovely Wooded Retreat

The Birches is a wonderful, relaxing and spotless place to make your home while in Maine. My husband and I felt quite at home and it was cleaner than several four star hotels we have stayed in. The central location of the house was great with easy access to any place on the island and Acadia Park has to be the most beautiful National Park I have ever seen. I rate it as high as Yellow Stone! Lorie is a great host and it is very obvious that she has given a lot of thought to every detail. Boiling our own lobsters was great fun and delicious; Lorie made it possible by having everything we needed on hand (except the lobsters of course!) After sharing our experiences with my grown daughter she has decided to start planning a similar trip for her and her family. I would also highly recommend this rental to others.

Peaceful Retreat

The photos don't tell the whole story. The "Birches" was just wonderful. Clean, modern, and so quiet and peaceful. We felt right at home as soon as we walked in. Lorie was great to work with and she has done a beautiful job of decorating the house. After being on vacation for a period of time you really will enjoy being able to utilize the kitchen and not eat out for every meal. We stayed 5 nights and ate in 3 evenings. Of course we had to eat at Jordan Pond House one evening (having a reservation was helpful because we had 7 in our party). Best lobster: Trenton River Bridge Lobster Pound. Best blue berry pie: Riverside Cafe in Ellsworth. A must side trip should be the harbor town of Camden. Great little restaurants and gift shops. We went to Bass Harbor lighthouse, but it was not as nice as the Quaddy Head lighthouse in Lubec.
For the outdoorsman you can't pass up stopping in at LL Bean in Freeport. Ellsworth has an LL Bean outlet but the stock is limited.
The whole coastline is such a change from our landlocked Lexington, Kentucky. We recommend highly staying at "The Birches" and plan to return.

Truly a home away from home

We felt right at home at "The Birches". The house was lovely: super clean; well-maintained and with lots of lovely extras (i.e. fluffy towels etc.). The pictures don't do the place justice because one doesn't see how friendly the setting is and how well equipped the house is. We like to cook and were happy to find great pots and pans and every cooking utensil we needed.
We were able to reach Lorie, the owner, with every question or request and she was extremely helpful.
The house is in an ideal location and I would highly recommend it!

Owner's Response: I always say... that you can get all the best information from these reviews! My guests mention things that I just take for granted and it shows me that all those details (that I dream about all night!) DO make a difference.

Homey, Lovely Place

We walked into the cottage and fell in love. Everything was so spotless and relaxing, and everything we could possibly want was already there. The young adults with us were fascinated, and looked in every drawer and cabinet to discover more things that we didn't even know we needed! Paperclip? Yup, there's on right here! Cheese grater? Definitely! And the glider rocker was so comfy everyone wanted a turn.
It's easily accessible to Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor. And Lorie was very pleasant to work with. We all hated to leave and can't wait until we can come back.

I have a complete "junk drawer" set up at each of my vacation rentals. I know that some people never have the need to go into it but...if you DO need a sewing kit, stapler/staples, pencil sharpener, scissors, pens/pencils, screw drivers, rulers, note paper, matches, flashlights, scotch tape or even double-sided scotch tape...they are there for you!
I am actually very happy that someone commented on this because my husband says, "Oh, do you really need all of that little stuff?" and of course, I say "YES, when you need it you need it - whether you are at home or on vacation!" Now I have been validated and he has to except it-thank you Kathryn and tell the boys thank you, too! :-)
As you can see I am a detail person and it is a blessing and a curse sometimes but I think overall for the rental business that it works out as a positive!

We enjoyed our stay very much, arriving in the night and got inside to a clean place waiting for us. Everything in order and exactly as described. The location is perfect -- nestled in the birches for privacy, close to a country store, a short drive to Bar Harbor and all the fine restaurants and shops, and easy access to Acadia National Park. We enjoyed cooking our own meals at home in the fully equipped kitchen. Telephone and cable TV working. It was a luxury also to be able to wash our clothes in the washer/dryer. Everything was provided except for food, naturally: linens, pillows, dishes, pots and pans, even spices. The rental is brand new and obviously gets TLC from the owners. Highly recommended by our family of four.

Owner's Response: Sometimes I am amazed that people will travel so far for vacation! These guests had the longest journey of all the families this summer. This family was very special - the "kids" were 28 and 22 and it is rare that children that age are still enthusiastic about travelling with their parents-that speaks volumes about the closeness of that family!
They were so excited about the area and pleased with the house - I was happy to hear that their long trip was worth it!
One thing that really works with our rentals is that they ARE all set up so that you can REALLY cook at home and that helps to stretch your vacation money.
Of course when you want to take a break and have a dinner out I strongly recommend Mainely Meats which located just up the road. You can eat outside in a pretty little courtyard and they have incredible barbeque and many micro-brewed local beers - what could be bad?
There is so much to see and do in the Bar Harbor area - come and enjoy this beautiful place for yourselves!

Awesome Retreat!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The house was just outside of Bar Harbor and was central to the entire Acadia region. Lorie's communication was excellent especially with a hurricane potentially threatening our trip! I highly recommend this beautiful cottage for future travel.

When we went back after they left the flowers were still there and we also got to enjoy them. I just happened to be staying in Maine that week myself so that "surprise" got a lot of mileage and we so appreciated seeing that colorful bouquet during OUR vacation!
I really enjoy my rental business and hope to serve my guests very well for many, many years to come.

The home was immaculate when we arrived, decorated so pleasing visually. It is stocked with all you expect and more. Things you may have forgotten are there to use. The property is on a quiet street. The Island Explorer will pick you up close and take you into Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. If driving, the entrance to the park is very near. Acadia is indescribable, so beautiful, to be seen on foot, by car, the Explorer or by boat. The vacation was my best in many years. Maine is a lovely, peaceful place to be.

When I called them they were so happy and relaxed at the house and so enthusiastic about the beautiful places that they were seeing on Mt. Desert Island.
"The Birches at Acadia Retreat" is really in a perfect location. You only drive for 2 more miles after you cross the bridge to the Island. Then when you want to travel to Acadia National Park Visitor's Center it take about 10 minutes (7 miles). When you are ready to go to downtown Bar Harbor that is located only 9 miles from the house.
If you happen to arrive at the small, local airport after making a connection in Boston you are only 3 miles away. President Obama and the First Family flew into this airport when they came for a short vacation in 2010. During their interview on the Oprah show this spring Obama cited Mt. Desert Island as a place he would never forget--he said that it was so special for him to spend some quiet time teaching his girls to "skip rocks" in the ocean. It wouldn't surprise me at all if that heartfelt endorsement helped encourage new visitors to our area this summer.

Amazing holiday rental

My in-laws recently stayed at this beautiful vacation rental for a week. They had never been to Maine before and even though it rained almost every day they had a fantastic time and attribute it to their love of the house! Every day my husband and I received phone calls from happy excited parents. To quote them "they have everything here, it us beautiful and the pictures don't begin to show you how nice it is, we have stayed in five star hotels all over the world and this is the most wonderful comfortable and fully stocked place we have ever stayed". They were very sad to leave and I know are already trying to plan their next trip back! My father in law could not gush enough about the wildlife, comfort, and privacy as well as the convenient location of their retreat. So thank you Lorie for making me look like an amazing daughter in law and also for being so friendly and accommodating! This place gets 6 stars from both my family and I!!!

Since their visit there have been even more improvements and new additions made to the house. I have added more dishes, more art and more furniture in order to enhance everyone's stay at The Birches! The yard is well maintained and the plants are in bloom! The bunny comes to eat clover almost every day. There is a young deer that comes to visit as well.
