Photos and Description of the Southwest Harbor vacation cottage rental
Cottage, 2 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 4)

The Knollette--Tucked away in the woods on a quiet, private lane, this fully equipped cottage with grassy yard is a short walk to a unique water and mountain view and low-tide play area, as well as to the center of Southwest Harbor in the heart of the Quietside of Mount Desert Island. (Google marks the house closer to the water on our lane than it is.) In town, there is shopping, dining and access to the Island Explorer, the free shuttle to all parts of MDI and Acadia National Park. The Park provides opportunities to hike, bike the carriage roads, canoe or kayak or walk the scenic ocean-side walks. There are also opportunities to rent boats to play on the beautiful waters of the Great Harbor or to golf, antique hunt, eat seafood and explore the surrounding islands.

About The Owner

Our family has been enjoying MDI since we were little in the mid-1900s. We live on the property nearby and are here to provide assistance. We are 3 brothers, two with wives, who act, golf, play tennis, hike and sail among other things while we are able to be here, sometimes together.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 1975
Why The Owner chose Southwest Harbor

Our family, 'twas our grandparents, began visiting MDI in 1900 and we cannot imagine vacationing elsewhere.

What makes this cottage unique

At the base of Causeway lane is the causeway and its bridge. At near high tide, many adventuresome folks love to jump off the bridge and body surf under the bridge. At low tide it is time for shells.

Then, at the cottage, we also love watching the deer wander the property.

The cottage is a perfect "quiet side" base to explore Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park. Property is clean, very well maintained, and stocked with everything one would need for a weekend or month-long stay. Owner met us at our arrival and provided a wealth of recommendations--especially helpful since we visited in mid-September and a few restaurants had closed for the season (Beal's Lobster Pier is a short walk and well worth it). Highest recommendation!

Our recent stay at the Knollette was truely wonderful. We arrived to find the idyllic cottage nestled in the woods just 10 minutes walk from the town. The cottage was so comfortable with all the necessary equipment and essentials provided. A short walk to the wharf every morning before breakfast watching the mist out over the sea was breathtaking. To our surprise, one morning, we watched a deer wander through the garden just 10 feet away from us, Ken and Jane were so welcoming we felt at home. We would both love to return to Southwest Harbour and stay again at the Knollette. One recommendation we would have is that they would provide bikes for guests as many of the other cottages do. Othewise it was perfect.

My husband and I spent a week in "Knollette" and enjoyed every minute of it. The cottage is very clean and comfortable with everything you need included. The listing is very accurate and the owner was available to answer questions and welcome us. The cottage is in a wooded area with a cool breeze most of the time, yet had a sunny back yard, too. It was quiet and peaceful with lots of birds, squirrels and a deer or two. Southwest Harbor is a nice little town and there are many activities available as well as Acadia National Park. You can't top the combination of mountains and ocean.

We had a perfect stay at the Knollette! The place was clean and had everything we needed. We had two adults and two small children and there are only 3 chairs to sit in, but we made do. A couch would be great! Also, the owners are close by if you have any issues (we did not!) Their green binder of things to do was a great guide. We hiked up a mountain, went on a beach trail, visited the causeway right down the way and best of all took their recommendation to go on the Island Cruises lunch boat tour with a visit to a true fishing village on an island, Frenchboro. Totally worth the money. Also the cottage's location is ideal - a quick trip into the fabulous little town - great food and shopping and my two young boys loved that we were 10 minutes away from Echo Lake - part of Acadia. Bar Harbor is a 20-25 minute drive and we spent time there as well.
We will definitely be back! Thank you for the best kickoff to summer for us!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the heads up! The fourth chair is back in its proper place.

So glad it was a positive stay and we hope we can help you out again when you return.
