Winter in Arizona

All of our working lives, it was our dream to spend winters somewhere in the warm south. Finally, retirement arrived and we had the opportunity to spend 9 weeks in Buckeye Arizona. It was a dream come true. From January 1 to March 6 we enjoyed Phil and Cassandra's beautiful home, which included so many things that our apartment lacked - washer, dryer, dishwasher, garberator, secluded back yard, patio chairs and table, bikes, barbeque, 2 bathrooms, etc. The house itself is almost new and so lovely - Cassandra's touch as decorator is evident. It was great to have internet, TV, and DVD player. The neighbourhood is amazing - paved paths for long walks and bike rides, with stores such as Walmart and Fry's grocery a 5 minute walk away. Also nearby are lots of restaurants. We loved walking to Chipotle Grill for a delicious burrito or to Jack in the Box for the world's best chocolate shake. We found travelling around was easy - the roads are wide and traffic is light (not like Highway 401 to Toronto). If was fun to explore Phoenix on the Metro Lite Rail and Scottsdale on the free trolley. Parking for most things was free and the Lite Rail was very cheap. Other activities included a hockey game, Spring Training baseball game, and a golf tournament. Malcolm was ecstatic to be able to play golf for a very reasonable price, twice weekly. There are great shopping areas, museums, zoos and parks. The people everywhere were extremely friendly and helpful. The scenery is lovely - mountains and cacti everywhere and the sunsets are spectacular. It was a real treat to pick fresh oranges from a friend's tree. But the best thing about Arizona in January, February and March is the weather. Mornings are cool - you'll need a light jacket, but by afternoon you will be sitting in the sun in your shorts. Temperatures average 15 to 25 degrees celsius (65 to 80 degrees fahrenheit) and sunny every day - you don't get that in Florida! I loved being able to open the windows every day. It was great to avoid the snow, cold and icy sidewalks at home. We can't wait to return again next winter.
