Foreshadowing, ha ha. Cody skipped a ski trip to complete an architecture paper. A high school teacher, Sunshine was researching content for a student project. The random Border's bookstore encounter resulted in a wedding 6 months later. We both enjoyed satisfying careers in coastal CA, but freeway commutes were wearing Cody out. Solution to traffic jams? Sell your home, buy a house in a foreign country without seeing it; and move to rural Costa Rica. Did I mention it was 40 minutes off pavement, and would take 2 years to get a telephone? ha ha.
For 7ish years we have stretched our boundaries; building a business, getting to know the people and culture of Costa Rica, and learning to cope with Second World challenges. Cody has been busy building 14+ fully custom vacation homes and pools around Playa Negra, Guanacaste. Here in Costa Rica, and 10 years into marriage; our greatest blessing arrived in the form of one amazing little girl. Sunshine still misses the numerous joys of teaching (great students, faculty comrade, and writing curriculum) and conveniences of US life (Nearest Target and Home Depot? Sadly about 3000 miles). Fortunately, renewed purpose has been found as Catalina's Mommy.
It is true that the beaches, foliage and wild-life of Costa Rica are uniquely beautiful; the people good hearted and loyal. Folks often say it sounds exciting to live in Costa Rica. Guanacaste is a perfect climate for laying around on the beach on vacation, taking a sunset horseback ride or zipping through the tree canopy with Howler Monkeys. However the intense heat and scorching sun is draining for 6 days a week of work if you are not on vacation. We remain grateful for our business, and strive to grow where planted; yet many of our dreams linger in the snow and hiking trails of Durango's refreshing mountain forests. We think you'll share the same emotions the minute you begin your ascent into the breathtaking mountains.
Our dream future would involve an area with year-round outdoor opportunities we could enjoy as a family, refreshing weather, and horses. Grandma Margaret, now 92, and Grandpa Frederick used to visit Durango many years before we were born. Our first trip, and we loved it as much as they did. It is easy to see Durango as the ideal place to raise a family and enjoy being outdoors as many days a year as possible. There are arts, culture, great dining, awesome people, and a 4 year college. We've visited Durango in all seasons, and have yet to find a time of year that the mountain does not take our breath away! The Historic downtown area has a wonderful offering of dining options, visual arts, unique shopping and exciting events. The Fort Lewis college offers a variety of learning, music and theater opportunities. The mountain is almost central between Historic Durango and Silverton (we love to browse Silverton and Ouray too). There is something to enjoy outside year-round as a couple or a family. It is an easy town to make friends in; we have struck up meaningful warm, conversations with people on the top deck of the Ouray Brewery, at local churches, in the Brown's Shoe-store, at the Rochester Hotel, in Garden Schwartz Outdoor store, and on the slopes. Between the wealth of outdoor activities for all ages (we have not even had a chance to try them all yet!), amazing weather, educational opportunities, arts, great food, lots of choices for worship, antiques, unique boutiques, historic ambiance, wildlife, lakes and incredible mountain views, Durango is simply Amazing.
Durango's family friendly ski resort and historic downtown have won recognition from Conde Nast , US News and Outdoor Magazine, among numerous national publications. We realize that guests have many choices of lodging for a visit to Durango (and believe you should come to Durango & Purgatory no matter where you stay!). We have chosen two properties at the resort area that we love immensely, and invested our hearts and elbow grease into making them very special. Each is central to Durango and Silverton with easy access to mountain fun for people that love the outdoors. Our East Rim condo is slope side, our Silverpick town-home is one mile south. The slopeside location boasts DMMA ammenities, the townhome has an awesome king canopy suite with vaulted ceiling and immediate access to the Aspen Forest. Both homes have been significantly upgraded, have high quality decors, 2 levels of views and a deck or balcony. Whether you are honeymooners, a family with young children, a couple needing a refresher, or traveling with the in-laws, our thoughtfully planned and lovingly decorated home may be the perfect place to create lasting vacation memories.
