Photos and Description of the Mariposa vacation chalet rental
3 bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms (tub) + Game Room with double futon, sleeps 8

Romantic evenings. A dance floor. Stargaze - look, there's Orion! Folks love no neighbors' lights and no traffic noise. Breathe pure, cool air (15 degres cooler than town). Drink sweet, non-chlorinated water. The chalet is a comfortable base from which adventurous families launch serious explorations of nearby Yosemite and the Sierra. Days begin with animated fly-ins of wild doves, stellar jays, dark-eyed juncos, grosbeaks and hummingbirds who come to enjoy birdseed. Guests watch happily from comfortable chairs in the Great Room. Squirrels join the party. Sometimes, wild turkeys and gray foxes. Deer cross the meadow. After Mother Nature's morning shock and awe, the chalet's bell sounds; time to travel through another portal to one of America's richest historical periods. We head for Gold Country Mariposa to enjoy the California Mining and Mineral Museum, the History Museum, one of our state's oldest newspapers, and tour California's oldest active courthouse. Amazing!

Explosion of Beauty–Everywhere: Welcome to our second season as a vacation rental! We're excited about being able to help our guests experience the beauty we've been enjoying for years. You don't have to wait 'til you arrive at Yosemite to be captured by nature's splendor. Starlit Chalet is in the middle of a Ponderosa Pine and Incense Cedar forest - a constant explosion of beauty outside every window. Put on your walking shoes, walk down the hill to the mailbox, turn right onto Jerseydale Road and walk to the CDF Station. Take in the trees, the meadows, the quiet, the extravagance of nature in every direction. And, when the sun comes up, get the birdseed from the pantry, sprinkle it generously along the deck railing and watch the joyful ballet of feathered and furried friends. Oh, and did we mention that our lovely chalet is usually 15 degrees cooler than town in summer?

Star-gazing–Cooking Fun: The only lights to distract at night come from the moon and billions of galaxies that populate a vast window in the Southern Sky. The starry majesty of the heavens crowns towering Ponderosa Pines. All seen most nights from the redwood deck circling half the chalet. You don't need a Hubble telescope to enjoy the nightly parade of the universe’s celestial extravagance – our star chart and binoculars will do the job just fine … The kitchen includes spacious counters, custom cabinets and many appliances, including a new convection microwave oven. The inviting tile bar connecting the kitchen and dining area is a great place to gather during meal preparation and cheer on the cook. And if the cook is willing, throwing a few steaks on the barbie may be the perfect preparation for tomorrow's Yosemite hike or tonight's star-gazing session.

Dance Floor–Sandy Beaches: Your host, Paul, has hiked the Sierra Nevada for 20 years and can answer questions about hiking trails and how to plan every minute of your stay. And when in residence, he also teaches Argentine tango for beginners. The Great Room's comfortable seating can easily be moved to create dance space when the sun goes down. Bring your CD's and dancing shoes and enjoy your favorite dances with your favorite partner as the stars twinkle overhead. Set a romantic mood with the dimmable track lights. Feet sore from dancing all night? Relief is just 15 minutes away at Briceburg. Cold water and sandy beaches, a good prescription for tired feet. And a perfect place for swimming, picnics, hiking, kayaking, fishing and seeing wildlife. White-water rafting is available in May and June.

About Paul Weiss

I spend my time traveling, writing, and producing documentary videos to help make the world a better place, especially for children. And nature photography. And when I'm at the chalet, hiking twice weekly with a local hiking group. Life is good!

Paul Weiss purchased this chalet in 2001
Why Paul Weiss chose Mariposa

Having a mountain cabin or chalet was always one of my dreams. Now I get to share that dream with my guests. It took several years for me to find the chalet but it was well worth the wait. When my guests enter the Great Room for the first time and look at the forest through 3 stories of windows, the 'Wow!' they express makes it all worthwhile.

What makes this chalet unique

The star-rich Southern sky. Magnificent Ponderosa Pines and Incense Cedars. Wildlife. The incredible silence and, yet, only minutes from town on a well-maintained road. Sweet, sweet well water. Mountain living at its best plus WiFi, Netflix, Smart TV and Bluetooth stereo.

We had an awesome time in this house. It's very cozy and clean.
The nature is perfect. In the morning you can watch the squirrels and birds and in the evening you can enjoy the stars.
Very great service, thank you Paul :-)

Owner's Response: Thanks for taking the time to respond. Our guests don't realize it, but all those squirrels, birds and deer have been trained to appear on cue. Can't train the stars, however, they listen to a different drummer!

This chalet was so inviting, peaceful & beautiful. Paul & Nora made our stay so comfortable. Almost everything that you might need is in that house. Whatever that was said on the description on the property was accurate. Our family had an amazing time. Excellent experience. Thank you.
Owner's Response: When I first started last season, I made a list of things I would want in a mountain rental and tried to include all of them in my beautiful chalet. It seems to be working and I'm thrilled to get excellent reviews like this one from our amazing guests. Thank you! Please come back, we'll leave a light on for you.

Starlit Chalet is about a 40 minute drive from the park itself, but the drive is worth it. Away from the hustle and bustle of the park, our family was able to enjoy beautiful starlit nights on the deck, visits from the woodland creatures (jays, hummingbirds, other bird species, squirrels, deer and wild turkeys) in the morning and a great night's sleep in comfortable surroundings. It was nice being able to cook breakfast in the mornings and supper at the Chalet a couple of nights, Mariposa is close with good restaurants for other needs. Highly recommend this property and the great hospitality of Paul and Nora.

a dream

We were with a group of six from the south of the Netherlands, and the drive up to the house in the evening was already an adventure! Where are we going? For us this was truly a dream, to find the chalet in the middle of the forrest. And as the name says, it was starlit. Everything is provided for in the house. But who needs a big screen TV, with a deck to sit on and enjoy the surrounding nature. Early in the morning we sat outside, and a squirrel peeped over the roof and looked down at us. We put some birdseed on the railing of the deck as Paul told us to. And yes, they all came, first the squirrels, than all sorts of birds, a wild turkey, the wild doves. We just tried not to move and watched them enjoying the seeds, while in the garden below the deer were grazing.... we were overwhelmed!

The drive to Yosemite was a bit far, but i guess that's because we are Dutch and used to short distances to drive to get anywhere ;-) But the road to the park was worth the drive. Very beautiful, and we even saw a bear in the river along the street.

Paul the owner, provides us with lots of helpful information and history of the surrounding area. The only regret we had was not to meet him. Nora, thanks for showing us around, you were very kind and helpful.

Paul, you are so lucky to be able to live there for several months a year!!!

Greetings from your Dutch visitors.

Owner's Response: Thank you, Maurice and all my new Dutch friends. The pleasure you experienced with the chalet and Yosemite is the reason we do this. Sharing hospitality and the beauty of the Sierra AND having the sharing appreciated, well, it makes our day and it encourages us to make sure Starlit Chalet is as good as it can be for our next guests. Come back soon!

The Starlit Chalet was just as described, a lovely 3 BR home in the woods. It's not far from the town of Mariposa. It's about a 45 minute drive to Yosemite Park. Paul, the owner, was very helpful in sending information. The kitchen was especially well supplied with anything you would need to put on a meal. And if not, the Pioneer supermarket in town is amazing. The water saving shower was a little annoying, but my husband didn't have a problem. The manager, Nora, was available to answer our questions.

I would definitely recommend this vacation rental to others.
Owner's Response: Thanks for your visit and your kind words. Making guests smile is what we try to do. I had a big smile at the end of our first season to see how energy sensitive our Yosemite-loving guests had been! Energy use for air was minimal and hot water usage very efficient partly because of our unique, state-of-the-art, Evolve hot water faucets. We want guests to sing in the shower knowing they are being good to Mother Nature!

Our family vacationed here in May 2011. The location is beautiful, the house well maintained. Georgeous views. Peacocks waking us up in the mornings. So many different birds. At night, we could feel the silence. As close to mother nature as we can get. The kids loved the board games and library. My son loved the 'gong'. We did not get to use it though. Paul is a wonderful host. Thank you for making our vacation a great experience. My teenaged kids loved it. My mom loved walking around the area. My little dog SNickers absolutely loved it.

2011 Yosemite Trip May 20-23

Our trip was with 8 people total for a weekend visiting Yosemite National Park. 8 is the maximum number this house can sleep and it felt cozy and comfortable. Paul greeted us upon arrival and it was very nice of him to show us around. He has a plethora of information about the area and is quick to respond should you need anything during your stay. Since we were the first to actually rent this Vacation Home as a Vacation Home I'm sure the experience will only get better with time. (FYI the owner is a Tango instructor and the reviews below are of those who took lessons and decided to stay the night)

The house itself great for a group of friends or a family. The X-Large dining table provides endless hours of fun; eating together, talking, playing games, and just an overall nice way to keep the group centered together. The kitchen is very open. During our stay we found ourselves mostly in the kitchen and dining area. The balcony was exceptionally pleasant in the mornings. Coffee and fresh air... so very nice compared to waking up to LA traffic lol. Oh you should know that all the items listed in the "Amenities" really are there. All you will need to bring with you is food and fun. Oh another thing is that the owner is gracious to have a box of bird seed in the pantry. Definitely use it if you want to see wildlife; we saw humming birds, squirrels, a wide array of birds. We had a very wonderful time and the Chalet was the icing on the cake.

Things to know - You will see a few big ants in the kitchen but they aren't bothersome and they don't swarm like small ants. You're in the middle of nature and you should expect a certain outdoor charm when you are staying in it. The grill outside is older and smaller but regardless will do the job - we did feed 8 people dinner every night off of it.

But you can see it's still a 5 star rating and are so happy to have had the experience. Definitely keeping this place in mind for future group trips to Yosemite.

Thanks Paul!

Owner's Response: Christy and her friends were our first vacation rental guests and we could not have started with a a more delightful group. I was reluctant to open my chalet to just anyone. What finally persuaded me to invite folks I didn't know was the belief that anyone who loves nature and is especially enamored with Yosemite will care for my chalet because it is, at 4,000' and in the middle of a Sierran forest, a critical part of the nature experience. But, more importantly, my beautiful home could become a source of inspiration and deeper love of nature for many. Christy and her friends proved me right and I look forward to many future visits. Lovers of nature, mi casa es tu casa!

A place reminding me of home

I visited the chalet about two years ago with a couple of good friends. We were there for a tango party and stayed overnight. The place has beautiful architecture and is very well maintained, as you can see from the images. The living room has a nice dance floor, big enough for 4-5 couples (also great for movie watching). The huge ceiling-to-floor glass doors provide plenty of natural light, which I love. I still remember dancing there in the morning while squirrels were playing with the snow outside on the balcony. There are lots of pine trees around the house. I did not have the time to go for a hike but that's something I would love to do in my next visit.

It's a place that reminded me of home (though my home looks nothing like this - maybe I should say "dream home"). If you're looking for somewhere that's cozy, peaceful, relaxing, and refreshing for a little getaway, this is it!
