Diever is at the center of an abundance of historical sites and attractions for adults and children of all ages. Diversity on your doorstep!

- Get a glimpse of life in the Netherlands during the 18th century at the ‘working‘ village of Orvelte. Visit the WWII transit camp at Westerbork – to where Anne Frank and her family were brought. Take in the many museums that will provide an interest to each member of your group. For teenagers, there are 18 fun parks and, for our younger guests, enchanting ‘fairy tale’ parks nearby. While the city of Groningen ('shop till you drop') & the German border are all less than an hour's drive, the provincial capital at Assen is just a 25-minute drive away! Not forgetting a day-out to the world-famous Emmen zoo, while for those looking for more sporty activities, sailing, boat excursions & fishing can be enjoyed at Giethoorn (the ‘Venice of the North’). Also, there is an 18-hole golf course available in Havelte (14km/9 miles away).

- Want to visit the beach as well? The Frisian islands make a great day out with some of the best beaches in the Netherlands:

Terschelling -

The ferry to Terschelling leaves from Franeker, Friesland (45 mins ferry crossing).

Ameland -

A ferry service runs from Holwerd, Friesland (45 minutes by catamaran or 120 mins by regular ferry). Excursions are available from Ameland to see seal colonies on Robbeneiland.

Schiermonnikoog -

The ferry runs several times a day from Lauwersoog, Groningen (45 minutes crossing time).

The ports are around 1 1/2 hours from Diever.

The village of Diever -

Diever is located at the south-westerly tip of the province of Drenthe (approx. 2 hours east of Amsterdam), is renowned for the open-air productions of Shakespeare which have been re-enacted in its forest amphitheatre every summer since 1946. In the village there is a grocery store, an award-winning bakery, a good variety of shops, cafes, bars, restaurants and a bank. There is a market, encircling the village’s 14th century church, selling everything from clothes to local products – this is held in Diever every Monday throughout the Summer months.

There is also a Dutch National Tourist office in Diever with a wealth of information on the surrounding area.

So, whether its picnicking in the forest, taking a dip in a forest bathing pool or going by horseback along one of the many marked trails, you won’t be disappointed by this areas rich heritage, its welcoming, English-speaking people and its unending choice of excursions and attractions. Come and visit the real Netherlands!

Accessibility:

- Diever is easily accessible from both Amsterdam Schiphol and Dusseldorf airports (both are 2 hours distance). A car is recommended (rental cars also available at both airports), although public transport (bus) just a few minutes’ walk away with links to the surrounding villages and towns. Nearest rail station is at Beilen (20 minutes away)

Using the farmhouse as a base to explore the Netherlands:

Are you looking for a central base from which to explore the Netherlands?

- apart from being able to explore the north and east of the country with ease, ‘Under the Oaks’ is also very centrally located for visiting both the south / south-west of the Netherlands, as well as the west of the country. The travelling times for reaching these areas are considerably shorter than travelling via the highway network in the west of the country, as our roads and highways here in the north and east are less congested.

- Being situated in the south-west corner of Drenthe, Diever is placed at the crossroads of three Dutch provinces - Drenthe, Overijssel and Friesland - all uniquely different to one another. So when you are in Drenthe, why not discover Friesland and Overijssel provinces as well - the borders lie just 15 minutes away by car, with the highway just 11 kms (7 miles) away!

Driving times from Diever to other parts of the Netherlands?

- it’s less than 2 hours from Diever to the southern city of Eindhoven (the Belgian border is just south of there).

A visit to Amsterdam while staying in Diever?

- many of our guests drive the 45 minutes to the suburbs of Almere, and then take the short train journey from there into Amsterdam city. It’s much easier to park your car outside the city and use the fast and efficient public transport from there!

Wishing to explore Rotterdam and the Hague in the south-west of the country as well?

- these cities are also just 90-120 minutes away. Again, travelling times from our region to these cities is faster than from many other parts of the country, as the highway network via Zwolle to Utrecht has lighter traffic.

We want you to have a wonderful and memorable vacation!

- It is our pleasure to be of assistance to you before and during your stay, and it is our priority to make sure that you will have a pleasant vacation.

We are happy to offer any help on preparing your trip. Please email with any questions you may have!

Greetings from Diever! We are David and Monique Samson. In 2004 we decided to relocate our family to peaceful rural Drenthe, one of the most beautiful parts of the Netherlands.

David & Monique Samson purchased this farmhouse in 2004

In the small village of Diever we found the perfect location to begin a vacation home: restaurants and shops at walking distance, as well as two National Parks close by (including the largest area of moorland in Europe).

The many attractions in the area and the outstanding natural beauty of South-West Drenthe are here for all to enjoy. Not forgetting the forests, lakes, dunes, hiking & riding trails, parks for the kids, the many museums & places of historic interest, as well as the ease of reaching the surrounding towns and cities.

Home Away From Home

This is the third time we have stayed at Under The Oaks in Diever!
We absolutely enjoy the gracious hospitality of owners David and Monique, the idyllic surroundings and the home itself. The owners always go out of their way to make our stay as comfortable and pleasant as possible. The home is very clean and spacious with many updates done to it over the years. When we arrive, we are welcomed to a gift basket full of delicious foods and drinks. David is there to show us around the home and bring us to the bike rental shop to get our bikes. The first time we came, four years ago, he gave us a tour of the town and the shops we might need use of. When we come to Under The Oaks we feel like it is our home away from home and I would say that the hospitality of the owners has a great deal to do with that. When they found out our son and his girlfriend got engaged a few days after we arrived at their home this summer, they came with a special cake for the occasion. During our stay in Diever, David went out of his way to locate tickets to the sold-out Military Tatoo in Edinbourgh after where we were traveling to. He helped us with purchasing train, bus and tour tickets to use during our stay in The Netherlands and Scotland. David and Monique's gracious hospitality goes far and beyond what most would expect and that is why we feel this is one of the best places to stay in The Netherlands.
The home itself has excellent features: The beds are comfortable, there is plenty of seating in the large living room, the eat-in kitchen has plenty of space, and refridgerator is amply large. Fantastic accommodations!

Owner's Response: Dear Caroline, Russ, Sarah, Leah, Jonathan, Nathan & Shannon, your (grand)parents first came here to stay in 2008 with their brothers & sisters as they wished to come together in the country they left as children. Members of your family have visited every year from Canada & the USA since then (when we add it all together, that's a grand total of 20 weeks' vacation at the farmhouse!) and we are so happy to see how much enjoyment you get out of your stay here. As you all say, there is just so much to do in the neighborhood that you still have not seen everything! It is our pleasure to help our guests out with anything, be it flights, car hire, day excursions, special requests, etc. We look forward to welcoming you all back to 'Under the Oaks' in the future!

The "Under The Oaks" farmhouse was a lovely property. The principal rooms are large, nicely decorated and have all the amenities you need for a comfortable stay. There are many comfortable bedrooms that can accommodate a large group. The propery location is ideal with close access to all shopping needs in Diever (groceries, baker, butcher, pharmacy, etc) as well as many recreational activities such as the National forest, bike trails, lakes, swimming, short drives to Friesland. The property is a wonderful base to explore Drenthe and Friesland. Lastly, our hosts David, Monique and their children were so hospitable, friendly and extremely helpful. I would highly recommend this property.

Owner's Response: Hi Arnoud! During your week's stay you managed to see so many attractions that Drenthe, Friesland and Groningen have to offer. You even found time to go to the beautiful island of Ameland with its amazing beaches. Also, the August weather was perfect and allowed your group to go biking along the nearby trails daily. We saw that the children enjoyed using the trampoline and playing in the yard and you all made good use of the nearby grocery store, restaurants and stores in the village. Thank you all so much once again!

I have never taken the time to wrote a response for VRBO. I have always been pleased and happy, but the owners of this property made our experience unforgettable! I communicated with them quite a bit, via email, prior to arrival and they were more than willing to answer any and every odd question I had. Upon arrival, they had arranged everything we could ever want or need for our stay. They went above and beyond to make our stay perfect. It truly was the best experience I have ever had and I hope to have the opportunity to visit and stay there again. I highly recommend this property for anyone considering a stay in the countryside of the the Netherlands. Wonderful home and environment! Thank you David, Monique and girls - we hope you enjoyed our song!

Owner's Response: Hi Amy,
Thank you so much for your review of 'Under the Oaks' and very happy to know that you so enjoyed yourselves while here in Diever. Glad that we could help you locate the best car hire rates (and availability at short notice!), using public transport and hunting down those episodes of that classic British TV series. Good to hear that you intend to return to 'Under the Oaks' - we look forward to welcoming you all back in the future! Thank you all once again (the song you wrote in our guest book was very funny!)

Our stay at the Farmhouse in Diever was wonderful! It truly felt like a 'home away from home'! We loved that we could walk to the local restaurants and shops....we rented bikes and rode on one of the many bike trails for hours exploring the countryside! Also, loved feeding the horse apples, carrots and bread and waking to the sound of birds each morning! The owners of the house are so helpful and kind and we felt very welcome... How now to have wine and a bag of groceries for us when we arrived!! We were close enough to anywhere in Holland that we wanted to visit ...just a short drive to see the rest of the country...although, we felt so comfortable in the home , we just loved exploring the local area! I will recommend this home to everyone! It was the most wonderful vacation!

Owner's Response: Hi Laurie, Nancy, Anna, Martin and Cliff,
You're very welcome! It was good that you saw so much during your stay, & yes, Diever is within easy reach of Amsterdam (by car or train). Glad you also enjoyed visting our 'Venice of the North' at Giethoorn, with its lakes and canal systems, as well as the nearby WWII camp at Westerbork, as you were very interested in tracing the history of Anne Frank & her family while here. And yes, the little horse in the field adjoining the farmhouse loves our guests' apples & carrots! We would all like to thank you again for coming over to Drenthe & seeing the real Netherlands!

My family just finished a stay at Under the Oaks in Diver, NL, and had an absolutely wonderful time. There was nothing that we needed for our stay that wasn't provided for in the house. The accommodations completely exceeded our expectations! It was so spacious and well equiped! David and Monique are fantastic hosts who truly want their guests to get the best experience possible in the Diever area. The wealth of information that they can provide and assistance was fantastic! We can't wait to go back! A gorgeous house, in a beautiful setting with the grocery store a few doors down, the butcher and baker also just a short walk down the street, and a quick stroll to the ice cream parlour make the setting absolutely perfect! The location is also so central to many activities in the area! We can't wait to go back and visit again on our next trip to Holland. If you are considering staying at 'Under the Oaks', don't hesitate any longer! You can't go wrong with this place!

"The spacious beautiful home far exceeded our expectations.. The complementary bottle of wine and breakfast goodies was so much appreciated. David was extremely helpful to us as we had many questions regarding the area. Diever is absolutely the perfect village, with nearby restaurants on cute cobble stoned roads..you really get a good taste of the culture that a large city could not touch."

"As international visitors it was pleasing to arrive to our home and find it fully prepared for our stay. The warm and friendly welcome we received and the welcome pack of food and goodies exceeded our expectations. This was followed up with handy advice on what this community had to offer us. We really loved the local shops, walking/cycling tracks and the genuine warmth of the local people. We look forward to returning again in the future. Jeff & Marcelle - Kuranda, Australia"
