We rented this property with the intent of having Gulf access to the scalloping areas near Homosassa. This proved to be better than we could have expected, and for the month we stayed we got our limit of scallops each day we went out. What made this location so great was the Weeki Wachee River. It is a short distance by boat to the Gulf through pristeen waters filled with manatees, otters, and even sturgeon. Although we had to "idle" down the river to protect the manatees, it was great to begin and end each day in fresh water. After a hot day scalloping it was nice to take a dip in the springfed river, and also rinse the saltwater off the snorkel gear, boat and motor. We also spent time kayaking from the spring head (5 miles), and only regret not having dive gear to check out "Hospital Hole" which is between the house and the Gulf. As far as fishing goes, we caught an interesting mix of fresh and salt water fish right off our dock, even blue crabs.
The home and property was clean and well-maintained, and the owner answered all our questions and concerns. Our friends, kids and grandkids each spent a few days throughout the month and we were very comfortable with up to 6 people. Local activities are plentiful, and all of us went to the mermaid show at Weeki Wachee, which also offers a full water park with slides, etc. for only $13.00 per person!!! State parks surround the area so it is full of "eco" activities and healthy fun. Although we were content to eat at the house, we discovered many nearby restaurants including an awesome Italian restaurant across the street. It was also great to discover that shopping areas were only a short drive up the road.
We would recommend this property and area for anyone who loves nature and Florida's fresh and salt water activities!
