MKV was designed before there was the trend of stacking as many units onto a property as possible. This means there are lots of lawns, gardens and trees. This also means the beaches are not crowded especially due to the Kaanapali Golf Course to the south and private residences to the north.
The unit is a ground floor condo which gets the morning sun on the lanai - a great place to have your coffee and breakfast AND in the afternoon there is shade from the trees.
There is a swimming pool just out the back door where you are likely to be the only one there. It is a great place to have a nap or read a book. If you want a bit more activity there is the main pool by the beach and Castaways bar/restaurant.
Keywords: Full Renovation Jan 2012
We have been going to MKV for 20 years and love it so much we finally bought a unit (as of June 2011). We have fully renovated with high end appliances and furnishing and cabinetry. We want a comfortable place that we can spend the winters where you don't have to plug in the car.
I have seen great beaches all over the world and the only one that came close was Lamai Beach on Ko Samui, Thailand but that was 25 years ago when there were only hippie huts (now it is wall to wall resorts).
MKV has an atmosphere that is far more relaxed than any of the other hotels. It is easy to mingle with others or find a quiet place to relax. My favorite place is on a chaise under the palm trees overlooking the ocean after my morning walk on the beach. I take binoculars for whales watching and a book.
Our annual 'to do' list includes:
A boat dive to Lanai and lots of shore dives. One hour walk every morning.
Lunch in Lahaina at an outside table where we can toss our shrimp tails to the fish.
A spectacular drive with a picnic lunch to the rugged north coast to buy a loaf of the 'Worlds Best Banana Bread' - so they claim.
A visit to the Maui Ocean Center.
Mountain biking directly up hill from MKV - a real thigh burner.
Happy hour at Sansei Seafood at the Kapalua Golf course.
.....everything else is optional.
