Love this beach cottage. Cozy, old-fashioned, not fancy. Just right for relaxing. Knotty pine paneling and hammered iron kitchen hardware give this getaway a wonderful vintage family feeling. Thanks to the Harley family for sharing this spot with us.

The cottage was just what I remembered from my youth at the beach - lots and lots of pine paneling and character. Doggies loved the screened porch and we loved the easy access to the beach. Lovingly decorated and furnished - everything we needed for our getaway.

Back again

We were here in May and returned this week. New mattress, new comforters, screened in porch still perfect, lot's of updates and some new additions to the kitchen. Hate to say it but, this is the perfect time of year to be here. Just don't fill up the calendar in October cause we're coming back! Thanks Bob!

This cottage has so much potential that is unfortunately being ignored by the owners. Any cottage directly on the beach needs continued upkeep which is not being provided. The home has a rusted, moldy refrigerator, a leaky sink, dirty dishes, a screened-in porch with ripped screens,and a sundeck and walkway that is warped with rusy protruding nails. The comforters are worn, stained and ripped and corrosion is a part of almost all metal in the home.Our concerns were ignored by the rental company whom we will obviously never rent through again. We have used VRBO several times before and have always been extremely satisfied until now. Holden Beach is absolutely wonderful and we were so happy with the restaurants and bike rental company nearby. We will be definately return to Holden, but will be looking at alternative beach cottages.
Owner's Response: I am glad that you enjoyed Holden beach but am sorry that our cottage was not what you expected. We work very hard to maintain the cottage under the extreme marine environment. The salt and sun age things very rapidly. We will check into the issues with the comforters and the sink. We replaced half of the comforters this spring. We have discussed this review with our realtor whom we have used since 1978 without complaint. We have replaced one of the comforters and checked out the sink. It was not leaking but was "sweating" because the AC vent had been directed right onto it. We did nto find "mold" in the refrigerator but have repainted the doors. And all of the screens on the screened in porch are in good shape. Unfortunately the high winds we experienced during your stay had torn one or two of them.

Comfy, cozy cottage

Harley's Better Half cottage was great for the two of us and our dog. The cottage was very spacious for it's size, there are many amenities and we really enjoyed having a screened porch. The view is splendid and the shrubs and lawn were well kept. The owner and rental folks (Holden Beach Rentals) were very helpful and great to talk with.
Our recommendations are to upgrade to a flat screen TV and go to the next level of directv (includes golf channel).

Perfect!

My husband, myself and our 2 furry kids are here now. It is absolutely Perfect for us. The screened in porch is such a nice touch. We can relax and not worry about the pups. They Love it too:) It is hard to find a non-massive, affordable place on Holden for just 2 but, we just did and are soooooo happy with it. The weather couldn't be any better. Never been this time of year. No need for AC. It is .....as I saId....PERFECT! We'll be back:)

Had a wonderful, relaxing, peaceful week!

My friend and I spent last week in this cottage and it was wonderful! It is like the beach cottages I stayed in as a child. It was extremely clean and had everything we needed in the way of dishes and small appliances, plus a washer and dryer (under the house in a closet type room). We did not use the room with bunk beds but the beds in the other two rooms were very comfortable with nice mattresses. We left Saturday of Memorial Weekend and the population was growing but until then there was very little traffic and few people on the beach. The screened in porch with rockers was a great place to take a break and my car stayed out of the sun parked under the house. All-in-all it is a great cottage and great location. The owner was great to deal with, prompt with replies and confirmations. My only slightly negative comment is that the bushes could use a serious trim! Then again, I'm sure they offer a lot of protection from the weather and for the rabbit and lizzard that lives in them. And there could be ordinances against cutting them back that I am not aware of.

We had asked our manager to get the bushes trimmed the week before you arrived but he had not made it yet. I'm very sorry that you had to put up with that aggravation. Hopefully you will be able to come back in the future. I assure you we will have a clear walkway for you then!

My husband, 3 young boys and I spent 3 wonderful weeks at this beach cottage. It is directly on the beach in a great location. Our oldest 2 shared the room with the sturdy bunk beds; and the pack and play fit in one of the bedrooms with a queen bed. We loved the wood-paneled walls - a great classic beach cottage. It is well maintained and very clean. We spent a lot of time on the screened in porch. There are several comfy rockers and a table on the porch that make it a wonderful place to sit and relax.
The beach is at the very end of the walkway. We felt comfortable letting our 8 and 5 year old go back and forth from the beach to the house by themselves. Holden Beach is small, family-oriented and feels very safe. The house is about halfway between the bridge and the pier so there is not public parking nearby. You will not feel crowded with other beach-goers.
There are not a ton of great restaurants nearby. We ate at Provisions about 6-7 times and loved it. But the kitchen has all cooking utensils/pots/pans and there are some great fish markets. If you want a relaxing beach vacation - this is it!

Had a great vacation!

We were a family of 5 and had a really nice time. Our first time to North Carolina and our second vacation with a place found on VBRO and we remain pleased. Holden Beach is a great vacation community for families - lots of mini-golf, ice cream places to choose from and room on the sand to play anytime. The house was nice, just like the pictures show, and having it right on the beach is even better. We drove to Wilmington one day for the aquarium and to tour the USS North Carolina - both well worth the 35 minute drive. Our favorite part was exploring for sea shells after high tide and the kids found playing in the surf great. It's a long gradual slope to any deep water too so there was lots of opportunity for splashing without much worry on our part.
