Gorgeous home, good location, some significant problems with details
We spent four nights in the Gardner Retreat as part of a gathering to celebrate my father's 70th birthday. Our group consisted of 6 adults and 6 kids. This is a very nice house with many luxury touches—gourmet kitchen, beautiful living room, large windows, huge garage, gorgeous bathrooms, etc. However, there are serious shortcomings in this vacation rental considering the cost. The first evening, we could scarcely use the living room/kitchen on account of there being no window treatments of any kind. The sun was so bright and so totally unobstructed in the room with floor to ceiling windows that the sunshine was simply too hot and overwhelming. We could not use the dining area table, or if we did, only one side of it, as we had to face away from the sun. Add to this that the house does not have air conditioning, and this was a pretty significant disappointment for our group. It must be said that the company overseeing the property went out of it's way to deal with the problem—the following day they came out and put up temporary black plastic sheeting over the vaulted windows, and this did help with the glare and the heat enough for us to be able to use the room, relatively comfortably. The house still warmed up into the 80s, but it would cool off in the evenings once the sun set. We were told that the owners, for some reason vehemently opposed to window treatments of any kind, have now approved tinting for the windows. I hope this helps, but it will be a risk that future renters will be taking, especially during the summer. I don't think this is an issue in the winter (sun sets so much earlier, and bright sunshine is nice in the winter mountains!). Several other issues came up that make it feel like the owners must not spend much time in the house, as anyone would deal with these things if they were forced to endure them more than once or twice. The sofas in the living room are almost not functional—the back rest is basically a freestanding upholstered structure that is constantly in danger of sliding back and off of the base. Seriously, normal sitting on the sofa can lead to a sudden loss of half the sofa! Also, the hallway bathroom on the main floor—high quality granite, nice fixtures, very attractive—is more fashionable than functional; it has a trendy sink with fancy faucet but almost no counter space or place to put toiletries. Easily fixed with freestanding bathroom furniture, but a problem right now. This could be 5 stars if problems were addressed.

Owner's Response: We're glad you enjoyed the home and that our staff was responsive to your needs. Thanks for the valuable feedback, we'll get to work on these issues right away! Most homes in Tahoe don't have air conditioners, so during the hotter weeks it can get a little too warm inside, but we're glad you could overcome it and have a great vacation! Feel free to stay with us again.
