What Family Vacations Memories Are Made From!
After a busy Christmas, we left our home in So. Maine to relax! Instead of I-95, we took scenic roads through Fryburg. We had been to the area many times, but didn't realize how close we were. The views of the hills were great. The house is across from a lake and under the ski mountain. Beautiful views from the beaches w/playground. There are lots of snowmobile trails, canoes, docks, ice skating area, etc. When we entered, we were thrilled at how comfortable and equipped the home was. Our guests (a couple with 3 kids) had plenty of room to stretch in their own apt downstairs. All beds & pillows were comfortable with lots of bedding if necessary. There was plenty of floor space upstairs as well. The kids exclaimed, "They have air hockey!" There was no blowing of air, which made it safer and fun for the little ones. The dining/play area was well used. We made hot cocoa, baked cookies, had playdough and games, but if we didn't there was an entertainment assortment already there (including books to read). Every interaction with the homeowner was friendly and light. Cell service is great, but no internet. Since it rained, instead of skiing, we drove 15 minutes to N. Conway NH where there is too much to mention. Grocery shopping if you'd want. We did an indoor water park for $15/head which was a blast & watched skiiers at Mt. Cranmore while the guest adults shopped. Meals at the house were easy with any pot/pan necessary! The next morning we were at Shawnee Peak at 9am. Kids went to 2 hour lessons where they went from clueless to skiers! The adults got time to bomb around on all man-made snow and it was perfect! Then we hung w/the kids on the bunny slope. We drove a few minutes back to the house for supper and a break. When we returned to the mountain for night skiing, an 8 yr old was ready for the chair lift. It was a success! There was a little natural snow on the ground that allowed us a snowball fight. Another day was spent by taking an hour ride to the Mt Washington hotel which was incredible. Thomas Edison and the likes of stayed there since 1902. We hobnobbed and watched CRAZY people mountain climb on icicles in 21 degree weather at the end of the earth. I don't get that "sport". Shawnee Peak had a torch light parade and fireworks. It's a fun place for any age. We are looking forward to our next stay & plan to take the railway tour. Even with unco-operative weather, we had lots of options to enjoy our time. We can't wait to come back to Moose Pond!
