Serene Woodstock Retreat

Stayed: August 2012
Three of us--my brother, his partner, and myself--stayed at Pinecroft for five days in late August and had a wonderful time. The house is located on a quiet, private road in the country. It is secluded, because of the woods and rustic gardens that surround it, but it doesn’t feel completely isolated, as there are other houses, hidden away, but at no great distance. The location suited the needs and wishes of all three of us perfectly. I was recovering from a difficult year, and enjoyed the peace and quiet enormously. My brother, a runner, had a chance to work out on the extensive, but not overly taxing, country roads. Our friend, Pete, tramped around in the woods and pined for the tractors and lawnmowers in the out-buildings and sheds.
But that’s just the immediate vicinity. Pinecroft is situated on the outskirts of Woodstock, which means the larger area offers all kinds of amenities. We went to see a play at the artist’s colony, Byrdcliffe, which is right in Woodstock. We took in several gallery openings in town, shopped for natural and hand crafted foods and curios in the local shops, and ate at several terrific restaurants, including the very elegant Bear. We also took two wonderful hikes, a short, steep one from the road to the amazing, cantilevered Kaaterskill Falls and another, longer one to High Peak. There are many, many other attractions, creations of both man and nature, which we did not have a chance to pursue.
And I haven’t even written about the house itself, and how pleasant and refreshing it is. There were more than enough bedrooms for the three of us, comfortable beds and linens, handsome but unfussy furnishings in all the rooms, two and a half baths, and thoughtfully chosen books on the shelves (including volumes about local history and walking and bike tours). Internet and cable were also provided.
My favorite thing about the house, though, was the open kitchen, which connected to a very long and well appointed living room, perfect for entertaining guests, eating meals, playing board games, etc. The kitchen is well stocked with dishes and appliances, and I loved cooking in it, while keeping an eye on what everyone else was doing. I also loved the fact that there was plenty of open space, so I could wake up early in the morning and do my stretching and yoga routines on the wood floors, before everyone else was awake!
