NOTE: Before emailing us about Pinecroft, please, please, please do check the Calendar tab to see if the house is already booked for the period you are interested in! And if you find it is indeed booked, please do NOT email us but keep looking. That will save our time and your time too.

At Pinecroft, our playful name for this modern, quietly comfortable home, you’ll enjoy eight wooded acres at the end of a private road, with an easy-living interior touched by an Arts & Crafts influence. This serene privacy is only a dozen minutes by car from downtown Woodstock and a bounty of arts, crafts, theater, dining, golf, shopping, fishing, hiking, and strolling.

Our east-of-town location also makes for quick access by car to antiques and dining in Saugerties, historic waterfront in Kingston, and other popular Catskills destinations on both sides of the Hudson River. And on hot summer days when a swim appeals more than sight-seeing, we’re a short car ride away from two prime dipping places: The Big Deep, the biggest and best swimming hole in Woodstock, and Lake Onteora, ideal for not only swims but picnics and kayaking too.

Or you can just chill out at Pinecroft itself, enjoying the breeze on our screened sunporch, a ramble in our private woods, or (if it’s rainy) a book from our private library. Or play music or movies on the high-definition, surround-sound entertainment system.

Amenities include a big, well-equipped kitchen and dining area, extra guest room with fold-out Murphy bed, and laundry room. Writers or illustrators or anyone wanting time alone to write or create will be drawn to the separate upstairs workroom, with a large, handcrafted writing desk overlooking a view of the woods, and a drafting table for drawing or watercolors. (No oils or acrylics, please!).

About Katherine

My partner Randy and I are both writers, and in the summers we live at the historic Byrdcliffe Art Colony in Woodstock, where for 18 years I directed a summer-long residence program for visual artists, playwrights, and fiction and nonfiction writers. Randy writes and edits nonfiction, and I’m a visual artist and playwright who has had productions in London, Paris, Berlin, Los Angeles, Westport, and other locales. The name for our house, “Pinecroft,” comes from a screenplay I’m working on, a comedy-mystery set in a haunted art colony.

Katherine purchased this house in 2012
Why Katherine chose Woodstock

Woodstock offers a rare mix of a vibrant art community set in a beautiful mountain landscape. My father had a house here, and I worked at Byrdcliffe for many years, so I have a deep connection to the area. We wanted a second home here. We'd looked at houses in the area for over two years; we loved the feel of this house - a secluded home we could decorate in an Arts & Crafts manner, at the end of a quiet road, yet close not only to Woodstock, but Saugerties, Kingston, and other interesting Catskills towns and cities.

What makes this house unique

The house is only 20 years old and unusually well-built. From the outside it looks modestly homey; inside, it's full of thoughtful details that make it both livable and lovable. The main living area features an open plan, complete with picture windows and a sunroom that look out on a backyard full of flowerbeds, ferns, and the woods beyond.

Another feature that attracted us was the lovely, custom-made cabinetry and shelves in the kitchen and living room. The original owner was a dairy farmer before he retired, and his son, now a cabinet-maker for expensive Manhattan clients, did some of his first work here, with dark, smooth-grained hardwoods culled from trees on his father’s farm.

I love to cook, and the kitchen is spacious and sunny, with a center island and big counters. The sun room and windows flood the house with light; the bathrooms are roomy and have double sinks; and there are lots of closets, too.

All in all, it's a clean, comfortable, house in a wooded setting with lots of privacy. Quite simply, we bought Pinecroft because we knew it would be a welcoming home for ourselves and for guests.

This house is SO QUIET. The surrounding land is serene. Every window has a spectacular view of nature. The house is very comfortable and has everything you could need. My husband and I went for the weekend with our 6 year old daughter and we really enjoyed it. Lots of room to move around inside, and loads of room to run around outside. Highly recommend a stay here! Katherine is lovely.

Beautiful, Relaxing Retreat

I was delighted to have an opportunity to spend a few days with my sister Nicole and my partner Pete in the Woodstock area for a few days last summer. I grew up in a rural area in the mid-Hudson valley not too far away but I had only visited Woodstock a few times briefly many years ago, having lived in a small city in California for the last 16 years. It was great to get a fresh taste of summer in the northeast, and Pinecroft was the perfect home base for this short vacation. The house is set at the end of a private road with an extensive yard surrounded by forests; it is wonderfully secluded, quiet and peaceful. The indoor and outdoor areas are spacious, comfortable and relaxing and the house has all of the modern amenities. There are abundant opportunities for short and long outdoor walks and runs right from the house, more extended hikes in the Catskills within an hour’s drive, and theater, shops, art galleries, and great food in the town of Woodstock, just a few miles away. Staying at Pinecroft provides an ideal combination of feeling completely at home while allowing exploration of a terrific diversity of natural and cultural attractions.

Serene Woodstock Retreat

Three of us--my brother, his partner, and myself--stayed at Pinecroft for five days in late August and had a wonderful time. The house is located on a quiet, private road in the country. It is secluded, because of the woods and rustic gardens that surround it, but it doesn’t feel completely isolated, as there are other houses, hidden away, but at no great distance. The location suited the needs and wishes of all three of us perfectly. I was recovering from a difficult year, and enjoyed the peace and quiet enormously. My brother, a runner, had a chance to work out on the extensive, but not overly taxing, country roads. Our friend, Pete, tramped around in the woods and pined for the tractors and lawnmowers in the out-buildings and sheds.
But that’s just the immediate vicinity. Pinecroft is situated on the outskirts of Woodstock, which means the larger area offers all kinds of amenities. We went to see a play at the artist’s colony, Byrdcliffe, which is right in Woodstock. We took in several gallery openings in town, shopped for natural and hand crafted foods and curios in the local shops, and ate at several terrific restaurants, including the very elegant Bear. We also took two wonderful hikes, a short, steep one from the road to the amazing, cantilevered Kaaterskill Falls and another, longer one to High Peak. There are many, many other attractions, creations of both man and nature, which we did not have a chance to pursue.
And I haven’t even written about the house itself, and how pleasant and refreshing it is. There were more than enough bedrooms for the three of us, comfortable beds and linens, handsome but unfussy furnishings in all the rooms, two and a half baths, and thoughtfully chosen books on the shelves (including volumes about local history and walking and bike tours). Internet and cable were also provided.
My favorite thing about the house, though, was the open kitchen, which connected to a very long and well appointed living room, perfect for entertaining guests, eating meals, playing board games, etc. The kitchen is well stocked with dishes and appliances, and I loved cooking in it, while keeping an eye on what everyone else was doing. I also loved the fact that there was plenty of open space, so I could wake up early in the morning and do my stretching and yoga routines on the wood floors, before everyone else was awake!
