Photos and Description of the Frederick vacation townhome rental

Darwin's Hearth has been standing in the heart of Downtown Frederick since Stonewall Jackson marched his troops through the town on their way to battle. Whether you are looking for a stroll through the area's rich history or a week's getaway in a super trendy little town, our little home is waiting to welcome you!

Our home is a completely renovated historic home within walking distance (2 blocks) of all downtown shops, restaurants and bars. Walk 2 blocks in the other direction and you'll stumble into Frederick's magnificent Baker Park that has a big playground for the kids, lovely strolls for the adults and free concerts every Sunday evening in the summer.

At Darwin's Hearth, we welcome your whole family including small children and even your small doggy if he or she knows about indoor rules!

As an added treat, with every rental of at least one week we'll throw in a free massage (either at our home or at the spa) by My Red Bow Spa in nearby Braddock Heights!

We know you'll love our home as much as we do and can't wait to welcome you into the warmth of our hearth and home!

About Christena

I grew up in the area and have lots of family nearby. We bought this lovely home to live in, but work has taken us away from the United States for a few years and while we can't enjoy our home, we would love for others to enjoy its quaintness, convenience and rich history.

Why Christena chose Frederick

We bought the home quite simply because we fell in love with it!

A great fit for us

We had a great week at Darwin's Hearth. My husband was mobilized in Frederick and I and our kids came up from western VA to spend Spring Break with him. The townhouse was a great size for the 5 of us. The check in and check out were very easy, friendly, and not time-consuming at all. We took the kids to the Rose Hill Manor children's museum, which was a real gem! Frederick was a good starting point for day trips to DC and Baltimore. Plenty of good restaurants downtown and a spectacular city park all within walking distance.

Good kitchen, good decor (we get the feeling that the owners are fond of pugs :-), very comfortable. Markers, play-dough, and other games (as well a a video game) were left for our girls' use, and they were so excited: a really nice touch. There is a cute little fenced yard where we managed to have the world's shortest (yet fun) Easter egg hunt!

Suggestions: the beds need mattress pads because the sheets slide around, and also because it would be more sanitary. Things were basically very clean with a few exceptions (some "old house" dust and dirt here and there when we arrived).

This was not a problem for us, but the steps (particularly to the TV room on the third floor) are super-narrow and not for the faint of heart. Also, you can hear EVERYTHING that happens on the street from the front rooms. City living, I guess.

We would certainly stay there again.

If you're looking for a place to stay in Frederick, this is the perfect spot. It's within walking distance from almost everything.
On our recent stay we had two couples and one 4 year old so we needed something for everybody.
When you walk out of the front door, if you turn right, you're 2 blocks from North Market Street. There you'll find restaurants, shops, Starbucks and a brew pub. I pretty much gravitated to the brew pub and left the shopping to my wife and daughter-in-law. They're better at that with me out of the way.
If you take a left turn out of the door, it's a few steps to the end of the street and then left again, go 2 or 3 blocks and you come to Baker Park. Try to keep up with a 4 year old there. The park has everything to keep a little one occupied. It even has an amphitheater which I imagine gets some use in the warmer weather. When you think you've seen it all, if you cross the street to the west, it gets bigger. Also across 1 street to the south of the park is a dog park if you need one.
For a history buff, about 50 feet off of N. Market Street, on E. Patrick St. there is the National Museum of Civil War Medicine.
From the house it's also a short drive to Gettysburg PA.
I almost forgot to mention that the place has a full kitchen, tv, wifi, cable etc.
An now a word from my wife:
The home, the home, the home!!!
What a nice place, it is cozy and comfortable. Very clean, a home away from home. We enjoyed just hanging around and playing games. I would recommend anyone going to Frederick to stay at Darwin's Hearth. The owner is very accommodating and gets back to you quickly to answer any of your questions.
We plan to book it again in the future.
Owner's Response: Thank you so much for the wonderful review! I look forward to having you back in the future!

What a perfect "home away from home"! My father wanted to travel from Tennessee to spend a few days with me, my son and my grandson. Someone I work with told me about vacation rentals by owner. I really like Frederick and when I was looking for a place and came across Darwin's Hearth, I knew it was the place for us. Boy was I ever right! First of all, Christena was an absolute delight to deal with. She responded right away to emails and was very prompt in answering all my questions. I felt like I got to know her and like she really wanted to make our stay perfect. She even left a little something for my grandson! She just made the whole transaction very easy for me and my dad and that was important to me. When we arrived at the home, we were greeted by Frank and he was awesome too! He gave us a tour and made sure we had everything we needed while we were there. There was one day we were having a hard time figuring out how to start the dryer. We called Frank and within just a few minutes Marcela showed up and got us squared away. These are all just remarkable people to do business with. I had so many good things to say about our stay that my mom (who lives in Michigan), wants to stay here when she comes to visit this spring! I truly only have great things to say about the home as well as Christena, Frank and Marcela! And Frederick is just such a neat, historic town! The only thing we missed a little was a television in the living room. My dad likes to watch the news and he doesn't do well with stairs. But he survived and we all enjoyed our time together at Darwin's Hearth! I love your place Christena!!!!! A BIG thanks to you, Frank and Marcela for making our stay wonderful!

I found Darwin's Hearth when searching for a place to stay in Frederick to be near my family for an extended visit. The description and photos provided are absolutely accurate. It was a delight to work with Christena (the owner) -- she was quick to respond to all my questions and she is truly interested in her guests' comfort. The kitchen is beautiful and exceptionally well equipped. I hosted several family dinners and everything I needed for cooking and serving was there. All the appliances (including the washer and dryer) were in great condition. Some of the unexpected amenities provided were mittens and umbrellas! And toys and books for children! A very important part of feeling at home at Darwin's Hearth was the wonderful welcome I received from the hospitality team Marcela and Frank. They were there to greet me when I arrived and gave me a complete tour of the home answering all my many questions. I felt very comfortable and secure knowing they were only a phone call away. I did have to contact them with a question -- not only did they answer my call immediately, they came to the house within 15 minutes to make sure I had the information I needed. Frank and Marcela are the best! I would have preferred a Queen bed instead of a double in the master bedroom but that was a minor inconvenience. Darwin's Hearth is a wonderful century-old home near the historic downtown area of Frederick close to shops and great restaurants. I enthusiastically recommend it and I hope to have the opportunity to stay there again.

Owner's Response: Dear Bobbie,

Thank you so much! It was such a pleasure to host you and your family. Your feedback was very much appreciated and after you checked out, we swapped out the double bed for a queen sized bed in the master bedroom :)

I hope that you'll keep us in mind on your next visit to Frederick!

All the best,
Christena, Frank and Marcela

I visited family in Frederick with my daughter and grandson. We didn't want to crowd my relatives so decided to spend a few days in Darwin's Hearth. The home is a lovely home with every amenity and Frank and Marcela from the hospitality team were so friendly and helpful in so many ways, including giving us wonderful recommendations on places to eat within walking distance. The homeowners have included so many thoughtful and unique details, from personalized mugs to loaner umbrellas to a charming welcome message with all the basic information we needed for our stay. I will definitely look for Darwin's Hearth again on my next visit!
