This home was built in 1923 and has been lovingly restored in 2008 with addition updates in 2012 and 2013..

We designed Erehwon Retreat for niche markets, working professional or retireee's who can get away for one to two weeks in the winter and northern europeans and south of the equator (their winter) summer visitors. Year Round the Bungalow is only available with a minimum seven (+) night. We seldom are able to consider monthly rentals as this is a proprietor occupied property.

Our couples/partner oriented home and its antique decor is only appropriate for adults.

Occupancy laws and historic neighborhood density do not permit us to rent to more than four people.

This home has 1578 sq-ft interior with 10-ft high ceilings, a massive fireplace, refinished orginal heart pine floors, fresh paint, attic insulation, all new wiring, drapes in both bedrooms and dining room, and roman blinds in the living room. Living and dining rooms are open to one another, but separated by a curved arch. A classic swinging door opens to a kitchen with 33' 4-burner gas range, EnergyStar dishwasher and refrigerator (33').

Porch life: The exterior features an L-shaped front porch which provides a setting to enjoy the native plant landscaping, which requires minimal water. A pergola gate and custom craftsman fence includes ceramic tile art along the walkway on the north side of the home and adjoining owner office and cottage.

Henry Young, Jr. purchased this bungalow in 2007

During my childhood our family lived in an Craftsman Bungalow on Las Robles Ave in Pasadena, CA. Later we moved to an apartment building overlooking Central Park in Manhattan. My late mother reminded me that I always talked of the Bungalow and encouraged me to consider restoring one at some point in my life and in 2007, I purchased this property in Tampa's Historic District Old Seminole Heights.

Erehwon Retreat is landscaped with native plants which have been growing in Florida for thousands of years without human intervention. We are committed to providing the natural food, shelter, and nesting plants of local wildlife. Visiting in fall and spring, you will see hundreds of birds, butterflies, and a wide variety of crucially important insect pollinators looking for our native plants for predictable sources of nectar, berries, insects and firm branches in which to hide their nests.

The bungalow is as beautiful as the pictures online, and meticulously clean! The beds are super comfortable and the neighborhood is quiet and peaceful. It's safe to get out and walk around and only three blocks to The Front Porch, that is a gem!
Owner's Response: Thanks Carla, It was lovely to have you and your husband with us. There's something particularly gratifying when I see historic curiosity and discovery when I walk guests thru the Bungalow and I see relaxation setting in within hours of arrival. Great to have Southern IL represented on my history of guests map.

What a wonderful way to get into the New Year - enjoying Tampa and Erehwon Retreat. It is a beautiful home in a lovely setting. I also loved all of your pottery collection! We had a blast shelling on Honeymoon & Caladesi Islands, Tampa Theater is a must see; and excellent dining - The Refinery, Nikos, The Front Porch as well as Ozono Blue and Thirsty Marlin in Dunedin. Makes us think of moving to this area. Wouldn't want to miss that Kumquat Festival in Dade City!. We only wish we had missed the cold front that came in with us. Thank you Henry for all your hospitality and we really enjoyed Thomas (the retreat cat).

I loved everything about this place. I loved Thomas the cat the most. He is the sweetest cat that meowed and greeted us every time we came home. There is an amazing Yoga studio within walking distance. Tons of great restaurants nearby. Minutes from the Convention Center.

Came for Sun, Loved the Rain

We had several days of bad weather preventing our leaving the Bungalow. This was to be a week's vacation of sun and beach. Suddenly with three days of non stop rain, we had time to read and watch Henry's amazing collection of "important" films. We were able to dial down from the fast pace, and open our eyes to what the 1920's were like when people lived the simple life (people were not poor, they just didn't have any money - as evidenced by small closets). My husband and I opened our eyes to the charms and rewards of bungalow living in the 21st Century. Before long, we were thinking when could we make the move Henry made in the restoration of three buildings that comprise Erehwon Retreat. I suppose the real way to describe Erehwon Retreat is to think of it like the movies we watched here, Henry has brought together a combination ingredients--setting, historic accuracy, an relaxing color palate drawn from the colors of a ceramic plate collection in the dining room, remarkable care to detail, the cleanest vacation rental we've ever visited and a native plant garden attracting literally hundreds of butterflies. It's a romantic home without being sentimental or worse a museum.

Simply Wonderful

We were disappointed that we were not able to meet you especially after reading all the comments written in the bungalow diary. However, Thomas acted as your ambassador, and our daughters were able to make friends with him. We really enjoyed staying in your lovely restored home. When the weather warmed up, we really enjoyed the porch! And walking around the neighborhood too! This was a cozy retreat, and we appreciated the extra touches. The Bungalow and Cottage were perfect for us to spend time with our friend Linda, and we all enjoyed the Tampa area including Lettuce Lake and the TACO BUS. We had so many good meals in area restaurants. A Memorable vacation.

Lovely, But With Flaws

My sisters and I rented this bungalow after seeing it on this website. We read the reviews and it seemed to be a lovely place to stay as the pictures indicated. The Bungalow preserved from the 1920’s, was perfectly restored. It was decorated in the style of the time and had beautiful furniture, lamps and pottery on display. The owner, who lives next door was very nice and had suggestions for where we could eat and recommended sights in the area to see. We discovered the next morning while having our Starbucks on the patio (the coffee maker was broken) that the landlord’s office faced where we sat and he seemed to observe us while working on his computer. He came out to visit, which was fine, but we became uncomfortable with him being a constant presence while we were outside. We felt we were being watched the entire week we were there. He even mentioned to us after we told him we had returned from a walk, “I know, I was watching you.” The stone steps leading to the patio were unstable causing us to wobble a bit. Our stay at the bungalow was comfortable enough, but the lighting is almost as low in wattage as it would have been in the 1920’s. It was very difficult to read inside until the sun came up and impossible to read in bed at night. It was a nice return to the past but don’t expect to have all the creature comforts you are used to, such as chairs and couches that you can slouch on. The smaller bathroom is almost unusable for a grown adult, so the four of us had only one bathroom to share. Our toaster also broke within a few uses and both that and the coffee maker were replaced the day before we left. The TV base was broken as well, and propped up on some DVDs. The TV, as I understand it, has since also been replaced. The owner complained that we did not check out properly but we thought since he kept such a close eye on us, he was aware of all of our movements.
Owner's Response: The guest describes an unsatisfactory check out - who leaves the keys on a table, the doors unlocked and never discusses early departure, or even leaving a cell phone message. The result was someone robbed the home of its flat screen TV. During this guest stay, I was advised that the coffee maker, toaster did not work and they were replaced the next day. In addition they broke a wine glass. As for lighting, all overhead lights have a reostat in the wall switch, perhaps they didn't notice this.

I was advised one month prior to check in that one sister is somewhat disabled. She is not wheelchair bound but does have trouble going up and down stairs. We advised that the rear entrance uses stone paver stairs, the bath rooms both have shower/tubs and that one bath room was very small and provided the link to our website with the floor plan. I was very concerned that the renter did not advise me at the point of their inquiry that she had a member of your party with mobility issues and offered to refund the bungalow fees suggesting a hotel would be better suited to her requirements. Our office does look out on the deck but during their entire stay they were comfortable enough to have breakfast on the deck in their sleepwear and our luxury robes.

Your unique home is a beautiful and relaxing base from which to explore the Tampa Bay area. Your suggestions were extremely reliable. We had 2 excellent dinners at The Refinery and enjoyed seeign Quartet at the marvelous Tampa Theater. So much to do. So little time.
Our suggestions for future guests? Tampa and St. Petersburg both have excellent art museums, but the area has parks and preserves that should not be missed. We enjoyed very much Hillsborough River State Park dating from the Civilian Conservation Corps era and the present day effort to preserve the area, the Robinson Preserve in Braedenton. For guest not up to an easy hike in the woods or a stroll along Tampa Bay, try a drive to a charming rural restaurant outside Dade City called Pearl in the Grove. Where has all the time gone to? Oh well, we;ll try to come back some other time. Cheers,
