New home with excellent mountain views

We stayed here for a week in September . First, the pros of this property. The location is very convenient to the park entrance and many of the trails we wanted to hike. It is also an easy drive into Bar Harbor. It is in a nice quiet area that was easy to find. The mountain views from the deck are fabulous, and we enjoyed several dinners out there on the picnic table. There is a nice yard. The Otter Creek Market is literally steps away, and there is a very good selection of food and supplies here at reasonable prices. This is also where the Island Explorer bus stops with pretty frequent stops here. The kitchen is well supplied. The bedrooms are spacious.
Now, the cons. The house and kitchen appliances are new, but the furniture and bedding are not. The beds weren't real comfortable. The TV in the living room is about a 17" screen, and is hard to even see from the couch. The DVD player wasn't hooked up, so my husband figured out how to hook it up so we could watch a movie. There was no remote, so we had to get up every time we wanted to pause it or back it up. The TV in the upstairs bedroom was even smaller. Make sure you take extra towels and washcloths, because you only get 1 per person. Even with a washer/dryer, that wasn't enough for me for a week's stay. There was no instructions about what we were supposed to do when we arrived, and there was no house number on the property, so we weren't sure if we were even at the right place. We had to call the owner, got no answer, so we went to the nearby market, and he told us that was the rental. Security deposit was returned about 35 days after check out after an e-mail prompt from me. The last thing, which is probably trivial-there was an envelope on the kitchen counter from the maid asking for a tip. I though this was tacky. I would have left more had I not been prompted to do so.
Overall though, spacious, and would easily accomodate a large family group. Very convenient location. Photos accurately depict the home.

Owner's Response: I am glad you enjoyed the stay at our property. This was our first year with the process so it is certainly a learning experience.
To be clear- all of the linen-towels and bedding- are indeed new-purchased in 2011 at LL Bean.
The televisions are also new and the smaller one that is upstairs is a nineteen inch. We chose to not have huge flat screen tvs in our home because that is not part of our decor plan. The TV downstairs is a 28 inch. This is a reasonable sized television. We plan to include televisions with cable TV in all bedrooms for 2012. Some of the furniture is brand new, some is not-but all of the furniture is in very good condition.
We send an email prior to arrival on directions to the house, how to reach us, and where to find the keys on arrival. I am sorry if there was any confusion. We plan to mark the property more clearly with a sign that was constructed last summer.
We are sorry that you did not return our phone call when we called you back after you arrived to the property. We called both your cell and the house telephone as soon as we received the message. We also later went to the house and found no one there. We are clear and sincere when we state that we live just up the street and are happy to answer any questions or address any needs you may have. This would include assisting with any electronics issues or providing extra towels. We have parties up to 14 and our housekeeping staff provides one set of towels per person. We are happy to deliver more and I address this in our welcome greeting/conversation. We also have a notebook binder on the counter with all house information including how to contact us for any questions or concerns.
I appreciate the feedback and we will strive to improve for the second year. I did question the appropriateness of the envelope but figured I would allow it due to our housekeeper doing such great work and not really knowing the proper way to handle her leaving it on the counter. I do agree it appears a bit tacky and I certainly do not want that impression at the house. We will also purchase a new dvd player due to the missing remote. I send the security deposit back after reviewing the telephone and cable bills to ensure there are no extra charges. I will look to see if there is another system to review these areas to make the deposit return more timely. Thank you for bringing these issues to our attention.
