Photos and Description of the Pahoa vacation house rental
House, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 1-4)

It's a great house. This is a clean and affordable place to stay.

We are conviently located in the tropical district of Puna, on the Big Island of Hawaii. We are a logical gateway from which you can explore the strikingly beautiful, utterly raw, and uncrowded natural surroundings of East Hawaii. We are a 20 minute drive from the Hilo International Airport, a 5 minute drive from the town of Pahoa, a 20 minute drive to the sunny Kapoho beach parks, and an easy 40 minute drive from Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Come relax, unwind, and fill your days with fascinating activities.

"Paradise Getaway" is located on a 1/4 acre lot, in Anialoa subdivision. Our house is surrounded by undeveloped lots on 3 sides, increasing your feeling of privacy. Our yard is tropical and ever developing. My husband David designed and built this house himself. Upon entering you will feel at home, with our comfortable and open floor plan. It has vaulted open beam ceilings, and plenty of large windows, allowing for tropical breezes to flow thru. Every room also has ceiling fans, it is easy to adjust the temperature based on air flow. We have a fully equipped kitchen with many cooking and dining conveniences, so relax and cook at home, or grill out on our charcoal grill. Our sleeping area has a new and comfortable queen sized bed. There is a large closet with room for luggage, and drawers to unpack for your stay. We also have a fold out futon where 2 additional people can sleep. Our bathroom is clean, spacious, and has a full sized bathtub / shower which is heated by solar hot water. Most houses in the Puna district rely on rain catchment systems for their water needs. We invested in a 10,000 gallon concrete rain catchment tank, complete with a state of the art UV filter. This ensures ample water supply, and a delicious and safe water source for all your drinking, cooking, and bathing needs. When comparing vacation rentals in this area, keep these quality eco-friendly features in mind. To help you get out and enjoy we provide the following: beach towels, sand mats, basic snorkel gear, boogies board, small ice chest / cooler, kids sand toys, and flash lights for your night time lava viewing. Don't forget, we have on-site laundry! A FRIENDLY NOTE: Our house is on a quiet street, and we request no loud parties. We have a strict NO SMOKING / NO PET POLICY for the comfort of all future guests. THANKS

People are always courious what the weather may be like; it is dynamic! A "typical day" might be sunny and warm with some fast moving clouds and a short rain squal. It frequently rains at night and in the early morning, keeping it cool and comfortable for sleeping. The combination of sun, warmth, and rain, is what makes it look so tropical, and beautiful! It is helpful to pack a long sleeve shirt / pants, closed toe walking shoes for the lava, and a light rain coat. The following are all within an easy days drive: Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, Hwy 130/Kalapana -previous lava flows, snorkeling at tide pools, soaking at warm ponds, surfing /swimming, farmers markets,Lava Trees, tropical gardens, zoo, downtown Pahoa and Hilo (restaurants/museums/shopping)

About The Owner

I am a carpenter from Alaska. I came to Hawaii, designed and built this house myself. We enjoy it for some part of the winter, and hope you will do the same.

The Owner purchased this house in 2007
What makes this house unique

We enjoy our water source being so eco-friendly (water from the rain / warmth from the sun). Our home is open and breezy with large windows to gaze at the moon, stars, and the sunrise. Our entire family enjoys our large deck daily. We live on a quiet, rural street - yet it is easy to get out and enjoy the tropical beauty that surrounds us. Our 3 year old daughter loves learning about the volcano, and she has even seen fresh lava flowing at night!

The house was clean and quite comfortable. The welcome bowl of fresh fruit was tasty and a nice touch. The location was conveniently close to the beaches, markets, etc. The owners were extremely informative about activities. The house was a delightful place to relax at the end of busy days. The grill, snorkel gear and boogie boards were most appreciated, as well as the washer/dryer. We would most definitely stay here again.

I really enjoyed my stay in the little cottage. It was very clean and comfortable and had every amenity I could have needed. Communication with the owner was excellent and I felt welcome borrowing their home. The directions were simple and accurate. The welcome fruit basket was lovely. Internet services were flawless, water was plentiful and fresh. The grounds were beautiful. I would definitely stay again and I'd recommend the place to family and friends.

My wife and I had a fantastic one-week vacation here. The apt locates in a quiet area, it's very clean, looks new. There are some maps and tour books. We found the blue book is very useful. The owner, David and Kiesten, are super nice. They allow us a late check out. We are glad choosing this place.

Cute and clean in the Puna district

Our family of four needed something clean and affordable to explore the Hilo side. This house was perfect! It was beautifully clean and had a queen bed, double futon, and all the basics for a nice stay. The newer construction and vinyl windows reduced much of the frog noise this side of the island is known for. We spent some of our time in Hilo and some at the volcano and this felt like a pretty central spot. Would definitely stay again!

Comfortable Green Living

Kristin and David’s vacation rental is a peaceful destination within paradise. Staying at their home, you get a feel for what it’s like to live like a local: green living, few tourists and peaceful comfort. The location is in a residential neighborhood that is quiet and at night the sounds of nature come alive, something you won’t hear in Hilo or Kona. It’s a short drive to Pahoa where you can get some great Thai food, espresso, groceries and essentials. I really liked the “throwback” culture of Pahoa; hope it’s not commercialized anytime soon. Hilo is about 30 minutes away and has some beautiful parks and well-stocked fresh produce at the farmers market.

The residence itself has a nice design. The ‘traditional’ carport for enjoying the outdoors, a large wrap around deck and a very large yard great for examining local flora. The interior is new: kitchen cupboards laminate wood-flooring, vaulted ceiling, lots of closet space. It was clean upon arrival and there were plenty of cleaning supplies for keeping it so during our stay. The local hosts had fresh fruit and treats waiting for us.

The best part of all was the exposure to “sustainability”. I hadn’t thought much about it until I experienced it. Water catchment and solar panels for heating the water; ways to live green and reduce your dependence on utilities providers, and that’s just a beginning. It was a great introduction to green living and has impacted my thoughts on sustainability in my own home.

I have stayed in many homes on the islands through VRBO. I would highly recommend this property for 3 reasons 1) Green living/sustainability 2) local vibe and no tourist’s 3) comfort. If you need a fourth- its VERY reasonably priced!

Delightful, Clean, Charming, and Quiet!

My husband and I stayed here in August for 2 weeks to complete our home in the same subdivision. In addition to being very convenient, we really enjoyed it here. Everything was as we were told it would be, and exceptionally clean and well-kept. The photos really don't do this house justice. We had concerns about the amount of hot water due to it being solar-powered only, however, that was never an issue even on a rainy day. I ended up needing to extend my stay due to some delays with our house, and the owners were very accommodating. Also, no need to be concerned about the location in reference to activities in the area, as it's only 5 miles from Pahoa and about 16 from Hilo. You can play all day, and return to nature's peace here. There is plenty of beautiful scenery to visit along the Kapoho and Kalapana coastlines about 8 to 10 miles away, along with a couple beach parks in the same region. Hilo also has zoos, botanical gardens, ziplining, etc. I highly recommend this property, and would stay here again.

We loved staying in your home with our twin girls. Everything was clean and well stocked so we didn't have to buy much. The kitchen was perfectly equiped since we prepared all of our meals at the house. It felt like home away from home. Thanks again for everything.

Home away from home

I'm approaching the end of my six-week stay at David and Kir's vacation rental. It's going to be hard to pry myself away when it's time to leave. It is so comfortable and relaxing here. The home is only a few years old and is in immaculate condition. It has everything you need for daily living. The kitchen is stocked for cooking with some extras included (sharp knives, nice pots & pans, measuring cups, cheese grater, blender, rice cooker, etc.). There are beach towels, boogie boards, coolers, etc. in the storage area. There's a convenient washer and dryer, a Weber grill and a large wrap-around deck for dinners outside. Everything is very well-maintained and comfortable. The owners are extremely friendly, accommodating and eager to help with any questions or concerns. The location is convenient, about halfway between Hilo and the Puna coast and just a few miles from and excellent Sunday Farmer's Market. I would definitely stay here again and would recommend the property to friends and relatives. Everything has been just wonderful!
