Photos and Description of the Waimea - Kamuela vacation cottage rental
1 Bedrooms, 1 Bathrooms, Other (See Description), Sleeps 4

This charming garden apartment is situated on the sunny side of the Paniolo Town of Waimea (Kamuela)

Our peaceful, two acre retreat is the perfect location for exploring the numerous points of interest on the Big Island and a private getaway to practice 'Hawaiian Time'

The Garden Hale is a separate building from the main house. It features beautiful bamboo and stone flooors, 9 feet ceilings with fans, a well appointed kitchen and a private lanai with an organic garden. The daybed in the living room is a true queen size bed.

You will find yourself minutes away from the best beaches on the Big Island. The largest of Hawaii Island’s white sand beaches, Hapuna Beach, has consistently been rated on numerous international Top Ten lists. Mauna Kea Beach, a perfect crescent of golden sand leading to calm water, has been voted among the Top 10 beaches in the U.S. Both offer great conditions for swimming, sunbathing, bodyboarding and snorkeling.

Beyond the beaches, Hawaii offers a host of outdoor activities and sightseeing oppportunities. Head to Waimea and visit the many shops and galleries.

Waimea Town is the perfect starting point for a trip to the Volcano National Park. A memorable drive to Hilo along the Hamakua Coast offers breathtaking views of historic Waipio Valley. This area is also home to Akaka Falls, one of Hawaii's most famous. You'll see deep water-carved gulches and valleys, thick with tropical foliage. Stop and tour gardens full of exotic plants and orchids.

For adventure of a higher nature, the 13,700 foot summit of Mauna Kea provides dramatic scenery and an unforgettable visitor experience. The W. M. Keck Observatory provides a visitor’s gallery with exhibits describing astronomy research and star gazing.

There's no better way to experience the amazing cultural diversity of Hawaii Island than to visit one of the farmers’ markets that take place all arround the island. You’ll find fresh, locally grown fruits and vegetables used in Hawaii Regional Cuisine, exotic varieties that are as intriguing as they are tasty plus an eclectic collection of prepared foods. The market is also a great place to pick up handmade artwork or a unique gift and strike up a conversation with the artist who made them.

When you're ready for some relaxation, come home to

Garden Hale.

We have on site a Licensed Message Therapist (L.M.T.) and Brennan Healing Science Practitioner (B.H.S.P.) specializing in Cranial Sacral Therapy and Energy Healing.

Very accommodating hosts, perfect climate to enjoy Hawaii's warmth but not too hot to sleep without air conditioning. Papaya very morning, herbs for the fish from the fishmonger down the road, and we had fun each morning feeding our compost pail collection to the chickens was great!

Zen Hale

We stayed in the Zen Hale and found the privacy wonderful! It is its own building, well appointed, clean and perfect for two. The location is just right for seeing the sights of the Big Island and enjoying lots of different beaches. We had a distant view of the ocean and lots of surrounding hills. Matt and Rose are great hosts - friendly, helpful and generous. This was our 7th trip to Hawaii and quite possibly our best.

Perfect location, comfortable and quiet, close to great snorkeling!

My husband and I just spent a week at the Garden Hale following a week in South Kona. The Garden Hale was in a perfect location for exploring the north side of the Big Island, especially the excellent snorkeling in North and South Kohala. It is only about 15 minutes or so from some fabulous beaches including Mauna Kea, Mauna Lani, Waialea (69), and Hapuna which are great for both swimming and snorkeling. It is even closer to Kawaihae Harbor for kayak rental (1/2 day was $40 for a double kayak through Kohala Divers in Kawaihae). Being close to Waimea, it is also relatively painless to slip over to the east side of the island on a day trip. There are 2 large grocery stores in Waimea along with great restaurants, but I especially enjoyed buying produce from the Waimea Farmer's Market (on Weds and Sat) and a local farm (on Tues and Fri).

At 1800 feet elevation, the Garden Hale is at a perfect elevation for comfortable air temperature. Much cooler and more comfortable than the temperature at the Kohala water level, and drier and less cloudy than Waimea up the hill; this made for delightful sleeping conditions and fabulous star gazing. The bedroom has a comfortable bed, and is light and airy with a quiet ceiling fan for excellent ventilation. The kitchen is compact but worked fine for cooking simple meals along with the outdoor gas grill. The living area is spacious and also has a quiet ceiling fan, but is lacking in natural light so we didn't spend much time in it. We ate all of our meals and spent most of our downtime on the private lanai; the lanai faces east and was therefore perfect for drinking coffee and eating breakfast in the morning sunshine, and reading and relaxing in afternoon shade. There is a private garden off of the lanai, which was a source of entertainment as we watched the birds and a couple of industrious small field mice strip dead heads off of the flower beds. The lanai is also largely bug-free, which was very welcome to us after getting eaten by mosquitoes and ants in South Kona.

Matthew, the property owner, was warm, welcoming, and quick to assist with our questions and requests as we were settling in. He was also very helpful and responsive as I was planning our stay at the Garden Hale, and generously shared eggs, fruit, and vegies from his own chickens and garden with us. Thank you for a great week, Matthew!

Really nice & spacious place with separate master bedroom, large kitchen/dining/living room, delicious fruit ready to be picked in the garden. Matthew the owner was very pleasant and helpful with recommendations of all kinds. The washing & drying facilities and the gas grill were also very handy! Kamuele/Waimea is also an ideal location to explore the North of Big Island, including Mauna Kea.

The rental property was just what we needed to get our vacation off to a great start. It was out of the touristy area but close enough to enjoy the pristine beaches of the Kohala Coast. Close to town of Waimea to get supplies to cook in the kitchen with a wonderful array and use of herb garden on the property. Matt was a gracious host and was great with helpful hints for the island on our short stay. Would recommend to stay here, if looking to get away from the standard resort type accomodation. Room had all the amenities we were looking for as well and peace and quiet to boot. Thanks again and mahalo!

A Sanctuary Between the Ocean and Mountains

The descriptions on the VRBO site and from communications via email and telephone with the host matched exactly our experience - WONDERFUL! We highly recommend this vacation Garden Hale.
The air is delightful up here in the mountain area, bird sounds and breeze flow easily through all the open windows, and the spacious high ceilings keep us cool and comfortable. Ripe Hawaiian fruits and herbs from the organic garden just off our patio graced our meals cooked in the fully-stocked kitchen. The friendly Buff Orpington hens kept us company as we watched gorgeous sunsets fall into the ocean vista.
We appreciate staying close to both Waimea for meals, the health food store, local farmers markets, and yoga. And the ocean resorts and state parks for swimming, snorkeling, and sun bathing are an easy 10 minute drive down scenic Highway 19. Amenities are great - quality linens, easy access to washer/dryer, outdoor dry racks, and the option to compost food scraps and recycle fit our environmentally-conscious lifestyle. We loved no bugs, great indoor and outdoor air quality, amazing 365 degree views, star gazing at night, and our hosts' permaculture design features are terrific.
We plan to return with more of our family and rent the other 2-bedroom unit as well.
