Pretty Good for the Price
First off, the cost was very reasonable relative to other rentals on the island and in the barrier island region around Charleston. The kitchen, though quite small, was very well-equipped with just about everything you'd need. The second floor location was good. The overall condition of the unit was just okay as there were stains and marks everywhere on the carpet. I guess that is common with rentals but I would think a laminate floor with some throw rugs would be a better choice and would stay cleaner/newer looking longer. In the entry area there was no transition strip covering the gap between laminate floor and carpet, just the bare concrete there, which was kind of unsightly. There was no waste basket in the full bathroom upstairs. These things are not all that critical and really didn't affect the stay, it just would have been "nicer" had they not been that way.
There was however, one aspect to the unit that I think needs to be pointed out and which may affect one's stay, depending on their preference. On the main floor there is a sliding glass door, maybe 10' wide, that opens from the living area to a small balcony where there are some chairs and tables. The odd thing is that there was no window treatment on the glass doors, though there were small holes in the wall on the sides and above, indicating that there had been something there once before. I asked Gary, the owner, about this and his reply was that curtains or blinds would make it too dark, as it was a dark area to begin with given the trees outside in the common ground overlooked by the balcony. Well, it seems to me that if a user/renter felt it was too dark with curtains or blinds closed, they could just open them or turn more lights on. There were 19 other sets of sliding doors on units facing the same common ground and every one of them had window treatments. We just felt that at nighttime with lights on in the unit, we were very conspicuous. So if you value your privacy at night, you might want to look at another rental.
Seabrook Island is a fantastic vacation spot, just a beautiful area. We saw dolphins, alligators, loads of deer, and some small sharks caught by surf fishers from the beach. We loved riding the bikes we brought and the two that came with the unit (thanks for providing them, Gary), the beach is fabulous, the Lake House pool was great, and there is much to do in the Charleston area. We would heartily recommend vacationing in this area!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the feedback - glad that you had a great stay. We like to think that our unit is the best value at Seabrook Island - as attested to by our high occupancy rate, and past guests inquiring about return visits. Glad that you appreciated the well equipped kitchen, and enjoyed the included bicycles.
We have owned beach vacation properties for many years - this one for three
years. In years past we managed our places from a distance, but as of a few weeks ago are now full time residents at Seabrook - so going forward we can manage our High Hammock unit from just a few blocks away.
The living room/dining area carpet is scheduled for replacement in fall (schedule has been full so may not be able to do it sooner), and, indeed, a laminate is planned. Meanwhile, we are on a first name basis with our carpet cleaner...Chad from Bailey's Carpet Cleaning, who visits routinely!
Given that bedrooms are on a separate floor from the living room, we felt that having blinds in the living room glass slider area were more aggravation than benefit for guests. Even when open, the previously existing blinds diminished the light, and were a nuisance with the blinds in front of an often opening and closing glass slider. As for privacy, I believe there are more deer than people passing by the back of the unit!
Again, thanks for the feedback - hope to see you again in the future.
