Embarressed and disappointed
I have been to this area many times and absolutely love it. Therefore I invited friends from St. Louis to share a rental and explore this wonderful area. From the moment I walked in, I was disappointed. I had spent so much time researching! The parking was in the front yard, thereby blocking the view of the lake. The "yard" was a few green weeds, and the few shrubs there were, were overgrown and full of weeds. The house overall had a prevailing smell of mold and mildew inside. The screen door was torn - nice first impression. The furniture throughout the house looked like every visitor over the past ten years left something old that didn't match - not antiques, just old. It states that there are 2 kitchens and 2 dishwashers - however neither worked. Owner tried to be helpful, but repair man said they were absolutely unrepairable. We had to do dishes continually - not just because the dishwashers didn't work, but because there were only 8 plates total in the two kitchens. Forget having 8 glasses that matched. There was a bucket of mildewed water under one kitchen sink when we arrived, since that sink leaked. The fire alarms all hung open with no batteries. It is a very good thing that we all brought cooking utensils, because anything that was in the kitchen was old and junky. The beach is not really a beach - a pile of sand where you have to sort of slide down to get to the water which was not great for a group of 60 yo. A neighbor complained to us that the sand had been delivered, but not raked/moved to the water, thereby falling in the road as a hazzard to bikers. The front porch was very tiny - not a deck. Also only 4 outdoor chairs when the place is advertised for 8. The pillows on the beds were all yellowed and stained. The upstairs king bed was a piece of plywood on top of concrete blocks topped with a mattress - very uncomfortable per the couple in that room. The couple with the double bed found it sank in the middle. Our room on the first floor just smelled. The house desperately needed TLC. The size of the house was good.
The location was super - close to Frankfort and Beulah. Nice quiet street. Good road for biking. Great nearby activities and attractions. We went to Interlochen, the Sleepy Bear Sand Dune hike, had a bonfire on Lake Michigan.
We had a good time because everyone tried to be good sports and just laugh at the situation. None of the 8 of us, would recommend to friends or family which is sad.
Owner's Response: It is too bad that there was a mismatch of expectations. Our cottage is a pleasant family-oriented summer cottage rather than the five star luxury accommodation in which to hold dinner parties catered by a private chef that the renter apparently expected. The furniture includes family pieces which are rustic and functional as is typical of cottages in our area. The renter’s note to us about the dishwashers was the first we learned of the problem. There is now a new dishwasher. The beach has 60 feet of grass facing Crystal Lake and 20 feet of sand. We have added sand along that 20 feet to make a play area. The drought of 2012 took its toll on our lawn as it did much of the Midwest. While we regret that this renter was not satisfied, our other guests have been very satisfied. One family stayed with us for two weeks in 2012 and and has reserved three weeks in 2013. Another family that stayed two weeks in 2012 is returning for another two weeks 2013. We already have half of summer 2013 booked by repeat visitors.
