About Amy

I have lived in Hawaii for more than 45 years and my wife was born and raised here . Growing up on Oahu, I immediately fell in love with the Big Island when I moved here in the 70's. The wide open lands and the friendly people makes this a very special place. The Hamakua Coast is especially beautiful with many waterfalls, ocean views and lush green vegetation. After many years of owning a popular family style restaurant in Waimea, we have recently sold it and retired to the Hamakua Coast. This home was recently renovated for my mother. Most of her furnishings and knick knacks still adorn this home and gives it a loving touch.

Amy purchased this house in 2005
Why Amy chose Honokaa

Paauhau is a plantation village of old Hawaii. Driving down to the village is a beautiful view of the blue pacific ocean. Paauhau is called the 'Land of Sunshine' and the weather usually reflects that. Our neighbor has lived next door for over 50 years. She is charming and very sweet. Many of the people were the workers of the sugar plantation, which are now long gone. But the spirit of old hawaii remains!

I rented the Plantation Hale April 8-12, 2013 and found it to be nothing short of wonderful! The home is comfortable, well-appointed, and has all the little details that make it feel like a "home". I truly enjoyed my stay and found Amy to be so helpful. She called the house to make sure I'd arrived safely and had everything I needed. She also left a message to let me know that some paving work was being done on the road and wanted to make sure it wouldn't be an inconvenience. I really appreciated the personal touch! It's a great location close to Waipio Valley, Honokaa, and Waimea. It's convenient location provides access to both the windward and leeward coasts, so you can see so much of the island while still having a place to call home each night. I highly recommend this rental and will definitely be back again. Thanks again Amy. Aloha Nui!

Tex's restuarant has good food and great Malasadas! Good location to explore Waipio Valley and the Hamakua Coast,Laupahoehoe is a spiritual area, Botanical Gardens are nice to check out the flowers. Go to the farmers market and get some carrots to feed the horse. Waimea area is beautiful with the horses and cows, very picturesque. Peaceful Plantation Hale.

True Hawaii at this Lovely Planation Home

This was our first stay at your lovely home and we would definitely stay again. It was true to the pictures and more. Very spacious - ideal for families or several couples, very clean - greatly appreciated, felt like home - great to return to after each day's adventures, complete to every need - all the little extras in the kitchen, laundry, barbeque that make it so much more enjoyable. The special "home" touches and treasures thoughout the home just add to its special, unique feel. Lanai on the front and back of the home give ocean view and pasture view the perfect spots for morning coffee or evening "wine" down. For anyone wanting to sense true Hawaii, this is the location. Being in the small Planation town you truly experience the tranquil setting and small town family life going on around you, not like the crowded tourist resorts. Close enough to Honokaa for antique shopping, the Waipio Valley for hiking, the Kohala beaches for snorkeling, swimming and the Lapakahi and Puukohola State Parks for historical sites. Thank you to Amy and Mike for making their home so inviting, it made our Hawaii vacation one of the best.

Mother and daughter found great charm in Hamakua location, amenities, and places of interest. The house was a clean, restful, soft (colors and rugs), fully equipped and satisfying retreat. We found the historical aspects of the plantation location fascinating. We visited nearby Waipio valley, Akaki Falls, Hawaiian Tropical Botannical Gardens, Waimea, and west side beaches. Amy and Mike were most helpful. The strawberry papayas were wonderful. In summary, this vacation rental exceeded expectations.

Sugar Plantation Home

My family and I have been to the BIg Island many times and have now found a place we can call home. The location is near restaurants and attractions, but is in an area that feels like you are far away from the city. At night you can see so many stars and it is so quiet. The property has everything you need to feel like your at home. I would highly recommend this property to anyone wishing to stay at a clean well maintained home. My family and I will return again soon to enjoy this property and I will be letting my friend know about this priceless stay at the sugar plantation home.

If you're looking for comfort, cleanliness, cozy, charming, here's your spot. Centrally located so you are in the middle of wherever you need to go! Have your coffee on the Lanai while enjoying a spectacular view of the ocean and all the sounds of the Plantation area. Kitchen is well equipped so you're able to enjoy your home cooked meals as well. If you tire of the view of the ocean the porch on the front will provide you a great view a two very nice horses (they love carrots). The owners of the home provide everything you might need, and so much more, to make your stay enjoyable and very memorable. You'll for sure want to come back. We did, three times!..

An Exceptional Experience - Paauhau Plantation Hale Raises the Bar

5 of 5

It is my pleasure to review and recommend Paauhau Plantation Hale. Our party of three adults (late 30’s), were lucky to call this property home during our week-long stay on the Big Island. The location was perfect for us, as we wanted access to the island’s varied landscapes (but not spend hours in the car each day). The small neighborhood is lively but quiet - meaning there are plenty of people around with whom you can exchange a passing wave or a brief conversation if you like, and still feel off-the-beaten path and have the sense that privacy is respected.

We took full advantage of the well-stocked kitchen: we prepared all but two meals for our entire stay at the house and were pleased to find a cooler that we used daily to bring our lunches along with us. The gas grill saw some action from us, as did the rice cooker that the owners purchased after I had inquired about one. (I was doing some quick menu planning prior to arrival and asked about available appliances. The owners said they’d make sure we’d have a rice cooker to use – even after I assured them this was just an inquiry, not a request. Sure enough, there it was on the counter!)

The roomy bathroom and washer/dryer were great perks – after long days on hiking or mountain bike trails or at the beach we depended on a good rinse for both ourselves and our clothes. And I’ll be honest… I had washer/dryer envy: top of the line!

The owners warned us that the house was in kind of a communications “dead-zone” and we found this to be true… it wasn’t a problem for us: the phone could be used for local calls, but if you are depending on being plugged into your iPad or mobile phone and fully connected to life off the island, you might want to keep this in mind.

What I really want people to know is that working with the owners was itself a memorable experience. They are real professionals and offer flawless customer service. They are available without being the least bit intrusive, deliver incredible value, and their product simply cannot be beat. Our first week in Hawaii was spent in a rental property on Kauai that was available through a property management company. The property was fine – certainly adequate – but lacked the special touches that these owners provided, and the experiences were night and day. We have stayed in homes and rental properties for years, and Paauhau Plantation Hale has certainly set a new standard for us.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here as a family of 4. It was a real treat to sit and relax on the balcony enjoying a morning or evening breeze and listening to the birds. Very conveniently located for getting groceries in the adjacent town and exploring the north coast. Even Hilo, (with its excellent farmer's market), Waimea, and the observatory on Mauna Kea are not that far away. A very beautiful and cosy home (your pictures do not do it justice!) and we were thrilled to have enjoyed it for a week. Many thanks again.

This vacation rental is a real jewel. What a relaxing home away from home. We felt so much at home that we didn't even want to leave to go venturing. Amy and Mike are such gracious hosts. When we walked through the door upon arrival and saw this impeccably furnished house we were in awe. There was a welcome note and basket of local fruit & water, and a box of chocolate candy. Also, Amy personally brought over some homemade baked goods and some plant cuttings on our first morning. The lanai out the back has an ocean view, and was a peaceful setting along with a small fountain. There is a gas BBQ on the covered front lanai. The huge bathroom was a real plus along with a washer/dryer hidden behind bi-fold doors. Mike even brought by a blender upon our asking. This plantation house is located in an old hawaiian sugar cane camp that is no longer operating. Mike has done extentive upkeep and refurbushing of this house to make it look like it is brand new. We are not newcomers to VRBO and this place is tops on our list. It is located 2 miles from Honoka'a town which has grocery & retail stores, restaurants, post office, a theatre, and the best malasadas (Portuguese donut w/o the hole) on the Island at Tex's. Another 7 miles north is the beautiful Waipi'o Valley (a must see). Located about half way between Hilo and Kona, a great central location for seeing many areas, including the Volcanoes National Park southwest of Hilo and the north and south Kohala coast with it's dryer and sandy sunshine beaches. Along the way about 15 miles west is the semi-larger town of Waimea, with numerous eateries/restaurants, and a brewpub. Mauna Kea is also about an hour's drive for some very spectacular viewing of sunrises and sunsets and night sky viewing of the stars. There is also Akaka Falls towards Hilo and the Botanical Gardens. We even found a little 50's type diner with loads of memorabilia and great food about 15 miles away in the town of Laupahoehoe (be sure to visit the Village and Park there also to learn some interesting history). The VRBO description of their plantation rental is very accurate. We highly recommed this vacation rental. We hope to return again someday. Thanks again for letting us stay in your beautiful home.

Owner's Response: We have had the honor of meeting great people who have stayed at our Plantation Hale and you are at the top of our list too! Mike and I have both enjoyed our conversation and visit, that time flew by with ease. Thank you for taking such good care of our home and it gives us great pleasure to know you enjoyed and felt at home here in the Islands. We hope our paths will cross again.
Sending many blessings and aloha

A pleasant spot

The sugar plantation home is clean, pleasant and well-maintained.

The house is in a neighborhood of smaller homes, and you will be greeted by the early-morning cries of roosters. The nearby town of Honoka'a, about 3 miles away, has a supermarket, post office, stores, and a small hospital.

I would recommend Tex's Drive-In in Honoka'a, and a trip to the nearby Waipio Valley.
