A really great place to stay! Since it's right by Kyoto Station, it's within walking distance or a short bus or train ride to famous temples and shrines like Tofukuji and Kiyomizu teru. There's also lots of shops and a supermarket nearby so we, being the adventurous travelers we are, bought a ton of Japanese food, still don't know what some of it was but it tasted great! There were four of us so we had a blast cooking the food in the mini-kitchen and eating in the Japanese style room. The western style beds were comfy but the futons were just as comfortable! Overall, it's a really clean, comfortable, and relaxing place to stay.
Owner's Response: Thank you for your comments. We strive to offer our guests an authentic Japanese experience, so it’s great to hear that you took advantage of the Japanese style rooms and tried different kinds of Japanese food. Next time, please feel free to ask me to tag along with you when you go food shopping, I’d be more than happy to explain what the different kinds of foods are. I’m happy you enjoyed your stay and look forward to your next visit. Happy travels!

Beautiful, beautiful house; nice Hiro. I liked both. :)
It is a traditional house, fully renovated, charming and comfi. It was even better than we expected.
The neighborhood is nice and is easy to move by train or by bus.
We had a really good time there. It was a good thing to be in Kyoto during Gion Matsuri, but the weather is really hot and humid in summer...

Owner's Response: I’m so happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay here. Gion Matsuri is the most famous festival in Kyoto, so you chose one of the best times to visit! I hope you were able to cool down by trying some of the summer treats like flavored shaved ice that they sell during the festivities. I’m also glad to hear you were able to find your way around the city. It really is a lot easier than most people think and our machiya’s convenient location makes it that much easier. I look forward to your next visit. Take care and have a great winter holiday!

A nice place to stay in Kyoto

I stayed here for almost a week with my husband and it was a great place. We've been living in Tokyo for the past 10 years, so we try to go to Kyoto at least once a year. This is the second time that we've stayed in a machiya so we knew what to expect. It was really clean and the owner was incredibly accomodating and ensured that we enjoyed our stay. Compared to the previous machiya we stayed at, this place was a lot more affordable and in a really accessible location close to Tofukuji and Kyoto Station. We plan on staying here again next year.

Owner's Response: It was real pleasure to meet you and your husband and hear about your previous visits to Kyoto. I often hear Tokyoites comment on how they love the traditional and laid back atmosphere of Kyoto over the hustle and bustle of Tokyo. I look forward to seeing you both next year during your annual Kyoto vacation! Please feel free to let me know if you would like to make any special arrangements beforehand or need help in planning anything.

I really enjoyed staying at this machiya and would recommend it for families, friends and couples staying in Kyoto. The place was very clean, well kept and perfect for sightseeing since it was just a short bus ride to Kiyomizu tera and Fushimi Inari Taishi. There are also supermarkets and a lot of local shops to browse nearby. The owner was really helpful in organizing sightseeing arrangements and ensuring we were happy during our stay. Overall, I'm pleased to report that it's a cozy and relaxing place to stay.

Nice but some drawbacks

  • 3 of 5
  • Submitted: Feb 4, 2011

The pros are that this place is nice, modern and very clean. But its problems range from no closets in the bedroom, to pretty cold spaces throughout the house in winter (from the bathroom to the computer room) and a very high level of street noise. The screens on the windows cut out some noise but be prepared to wake early with four lanes of Kyoto morning traffic including buses, which are just outside the front door. (This goes for both rooms, but especially the room without the beds).

A separate issue is that all of the 'winter special' are things like passes that are valued at the equivalent of 5 USD, so sort of a gimmick. Even then, the owner didn't honor it. He said that since my first contact with him was before the said date of the special, even though I paid and secured my reservation within the dates of the special, I was "unfortunately not eligible." This was totally silly, and forgettable, but gives you a sense of who you are dealing with.

The other major drawback is that there is one closet to hang your clothes, and that is in the living/eating area. This is a really poor arrangement if you like any sense of privacy and are sharing this space. It could work for a couple, but not for non-romantic friends. I was comfortable there as a party of one, and unfortunately had planned to share it with a male colleague and friend. Fortunately I arrived before he did and was able to flag for him that he would need to find something else (but still at the last minute). It looks MUCH larger online than it really is.

Owner's Response: I would like to apologize for the points you mentioned, and would like to thank you for the detailed notes. We take all of our comments seriously and use them to improve our services. In regards to the closet, we appreciate your comment and are considering alternatives such as including a clothing rack in the bedroom. As Kyoto`s machiya houses are traditional wooden constructions, they can be a bit chilly compared to modern houses. Since we unfortunately do not have central heating (it is rare in Japan), we have installed heaters/air-conditioners in both bedrooms and the living room as well as two other portable radiators for use in the computer room or the bathroom to keep the house as warm as possible. In regards to street noise, we have installed windows designed to reduce noise to the bedroom that faces the road. On the bright side, it is convenient for accessing public transportation and local attractions. In response to your comments about our winter special, we wanted to promote activities that would be enjoyable for our guests while visiting Kyoto, regardless of the passes monetary value. Our offers are available for all guests who made bookings within the dates specified. My understanding was that the booking was made during our email exchanges prior to the special coming into effect. The reservation was held for a few months until your confirmation was received. So I believed the booking was made before the winter special began, and that confirmation was in the form of your payment. Regardless, I sincerely apologize for the miscommunication and for not having enough detailed explanation on our website. Again, we take all of our guests comments seriously and will continue working to improve our services. Thank you for your stay and we will endeavour to serve you better on your next visit.

Excellent Place for the Family

Our Family of 6 had a fabulous time in Kyoto and I must say that the stay here was definitely a key reason - it has everything that the family needed (comfortable and clean stay, coziness, simple dry cooking with near supermarts, quaint eateries). Location was definitely not a problem being just 1 stop away fr Kyoto station.

I was definitely glad that we chose this over a hotel .... will definitely return when I visit Kyoto!
Thanks Hiro for your recommendations and hospitality.

We stayed for four days in this lovely Japanese style house...it was spotlessly clean, very well equipped and located in an interesting area.

Hiro, the owner, was really helpful and friendly. He made sure we were comfortable, gave us useful information and some great tips on the local area (fantastic Tonkatsu restaurant, award winning green tea cafe etc)

Overall, this is a very special place to stay when you visit Kyoto.

The house is excellent!
I am Japanese and have stayed there with my Danish husband and his family. The house is Japanese style with needed functions for foreigners (kitchen, bath, bed-room, washing machine, PC...). It was a big surprise for me that there is such a nice rental-house in Kyoto. We have really enjoyed our stay with reasonable price!
In addition, there is a big hospital in front of the house. So you feel safe in case anything happens... : )

Kyoto Machiya

Our stay at the Kyoto Machiya was fabulous. The property was perfect for our party of 5 adults. The location was great with bus routes right outside the door and subway very close. Close proximity to grocery stores and restaurants added to the experience. The rental agents were helpful and easily reached for questions (in English). I highly recommend a stay at this property if you have a group traveling together in Japan.
