Photos and Description of the Santa Rosa vacation estate rental
4 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, sleeps 12

Once the Gump department store family compound, this estate is the perfect wine country retreat. The 4 bedrooms are arranged in a cluster of three pavilions – a main house, a pool house and a master suite. Each structure has huge doors and windows that open out to the views of the gardens and lawns. Past the main pavilion’s terrace, a grassy slope descends to a bocce ball court. A solar-heated pool is surrounded by a large lawn. There is a huge hot tub that can easily fit a dozen people. The Main House’s living room, with its tall glass entry door and picture windows looking out to the lawn and pool, is a natural gathering place. A long 12-seat table makes the kitchen a perfect place for dining. Beyond a second dining terrace, the Pool House offers the four-bed Bunkroom – wonderful kids’ quarters. The adjoining Red Room has its own bath and a separate exit to a patio. The Pool House’s master bedroom boasts a queen bed and ensuite bath. The lanai room facing the pool features a wet-bar.

A perfect mix of beauty and function!

We rent vacation homes often and this is one of the best we've encountered. On this trip, we were three families (6 adults + 6 children), so space, privacy, and onsite activities were key for us. The Gump Estate delivered all of that, and more.

From a functional perspective:
-Location: It's rural enough to feel like an escape without being inconvenient. Bud's meats is 5 min away and grocery stores like Oliver's, Whole Foods, and Trader Joe's are 15 min away. The Santa Rosa Marketplace (Target, Old Navy, etc.) and takeout restaurants are also 15 min away. Spas are a 15-30 min drive and golf 5-10 min away. We also took a day trip to check out the Healdsburg wineries (35-45 min away).
-Layout: The main house is a nice gathering spot where early birds/night owls can relax without disturbing anyone. The four bedrooms in the pool house and cottage each had ensuite bathrooms and separate exits...very handy. It's also nice that the entire property is gated, so we didn't have to worry about the kids getting out or locking up each night.
-Amenities: The beds are comfortable with high quality linens. The pool is beautiful, but the size and style of the hot tub is remarkable. My husband was pleasantly surprised by the condition of the grill and we all enjoyed cooking on the 6-burner Viking stove. I liked that I could hook up my iPod and turn music on/off in different parts of the main house (inside/out) with the touch of a button. The wifi and cell reception were decent, especially considering the location.
-Activities: The kids enjoyed playing on the lawns and in the bocce ball court. We all enjoyed the pool in the afternoons and the hot tub once the temperatures started to drop. The kids also loved picking the delicious apples and blackberries that were ripening on the property.
-Service: The owners were very responsive to questions before and during our stay. The gardens and amenities were beautifully maintained.

Finally, this place is simply magical. The scale of the main house with its soaring ceilings and huge windows is from another era. The setting up on the hill reduces traffic noise and provides wonderful views. The decor is tasteful, but comfortable and not over-the-top. The grounds are blessed with mature growth like rows of apple trees, patches of lavender, and gnarled grape vines - this must have taken decades of planning and maintenance. It's a special place and we miss it already!

Great place for a group trip!

We just came off a great one week stay at this beautiful "compound" of a home. The three house design is perfect for a group vacation. It allows everyone to have some privacy (each bedroom has it's own bathroom) and others can stay up later in the main house without disturbing anyone. After arriving here, it was unofficially decided that most of our week would just be spent relaxing by or in the pool in one of the many outdoor areas and enjoying the peacefulness of the property.

The location offers easy access for both vineyard touring and coastline parks and driving.

I would definitely recommend this home to anyone considering a trip in that area and needs to accommodate a larger group. We were all sad to leave and wish we were still there.

Loved it

We (4 couples) stayed here for a wine-tasting weekend, and it was amazing! The main building has a massive, light-filled kitchen and a living room; the pool house has a master bedroom; and the cottage next door has three bedrooms. It feels like really high-end grown-up camp! The pool is gorgeous and the hot tub is big, and the grounds are so lovely.... sort of English garden crossed with California mountainside. Really special.

Three Generations

We had a lovely time at the historic Gump estate. The weather was beautiful. We made good use of the jacuzzi. And although, it was cool at night (early April), we still got in the pool during the day. As my mom said, it's a " glorious spot and place". We loved the expansive views, the kitchen was gorgeous and functional,
the sound system and outside speakers made it easy to relax to our iphone mixes, and the separate bedrooms/bunk areas were perfect for our multi-generation family.

This estate gave us the wonderful family getaway we were hoping for. We all had a time to remember. Peaceful and relaxing. There are wineries within minutes and Glen Ellen and the Jack London park were 10-15 minutes away. We had an exquisite dinner at the Glen Ellen Inn and a lovely lunch at the Wolf House on the river. Everything we wanted was conveniently located and while at the estate we felt like we were worlds away. There are horses across from the estate and we visited them with our kids. It was like being in Italy but where folks spoke English.

The property was clean and well laid out. It had all the amenities you could ask for. I would recommend to a friend and a relative. And we would all like to return.

Thank you for a spectacular experience!

Gorgeous Oasis

My husband and I rented this property for our parents' 40th anniversaries and we could not have been more comfortable. There was ample space for every activity and lots of privacy. The large kitchen was a great place to gather at meal times and the views of the estate from every corner of the property are amazing. It is close to everything - wineries, farmer's markets, whole foods, hiking... or a perfect place to stay put and forget about the rest of the world. The pool is so gorgeous as it meets the lawn on all sides and the hot tub is spacious and the perfect temp. We are already talking about when we will be back. This place is utterly fantastic.

Stunning escape to the country

We rented this lovely property to celebrate my 50th birthday with friends and family and it turned out to be just perfect. The setting and layout are stunning. Our visitors described it as dreamy and romantic. What I really appreciate the most about the house and grounds is how comfortable AND beautiful everything is. All the furniture and beds were super comfortable and inviting, and the socializing areas really capitalized on the views. It is gorgeous without being overdone, with lots of beautiful details. It is a wonderful place to truly relax. Our gathering included young children and grandparents, and everyone had tremendous fun playing bocce ball, swimming, soaking in the hot tub and enjoying good food in the lovely kitchen and on the patios.

We reserved this house for a weekend gathering of 10 friends - all adult of course! The house is perfect for cooking/hanging out/and in general - relaxing. The main house has a chef's kitchen and large dining table - fits 10 well. The great room (on the other side of the kitchen/dining room has a working fireplace and comfortable sofas/chairs. The master suite is set alone across the patio, and the pool room (also separate) housed the rest of the guests. Bonus - beautiful grounds, deep pool & large, clean, hot jacuzzi. We will be back!

Spectacular piece of Paradise!

This is a very special property! We had a lovely event in July with about 40 people for a Paella Feast. Every person there was completely captivated by the setting, the comfort and the immpeccable style of the estate.

The photos do not do it justice (and I think they are great)!

It is tranquil with the rolling hills of lavender and the lovely sitting areas. Lots of spaces to hang out with friends and family or curl up with a good book.

Every part of the 3 buildings are beautifully decorated and extremely comfortable. It is all fabulous!
