Brilliant Holiday in Sisal at villa Sisal sur Mer
We had a 4 week glorious holiday which, at the same time, was peaceful and adventuresome. The owner was a solicitous, thoughtful, gracious and fun host. He made us welcome and feel at home but also gave us the space to be by ourselves. The description of the villa, location, layout and amenities was more than accurate - the hacienda felt like home. We loved its comfort, colours, furniture and layout. We had the service of a cleaning lady on a weekly basis. We often cooked our meals in the well-equipped kitchen and ate on the back patio amongst the stand of palm/coconut trees and overlooking the sea. Sisal is not a "resort" village. It is a fishing village with wonderfully friendly, open and helpful people. Although we met a few holiday-makers from overseas, Sisal is an unspoiled authentic Mayan fishing village. The beach, right outside the villa's back patio is beautiful, clean, and almost always empty, and you can walk it for miles enjoying the exotic birds and pelicans. The twice daily flypast of thousands of flamingos above the beach was a sight to see. There are several good restaurants in the village and one in particular, La Palapa, was our favourite because of the family that ran it and the wonderful fresh seafood they prepared. There was always great company in the restaurant with lots of laughter and much Sisal history. We felt safe walking in the village and on the beaches, even at night. We spent a lot of time at the harbour watching fishermen come in with their catch and watching sea cucumbers being prepared for export. With a rented car, we made wonderful day trips to Mayan temples, the nearby town of Hunucma and the city of Merida, always returning to our villa, our home. We picked shells for hours on the beach by the villa and on another nearby beach. Grocery shopping in Sisal's stores and market as well as in Hunucma was a great experience where we made friends with the shopkeepers and their customers.Anyone choosing to rent Villa Sisal sur Mer will have chosen a lovely home, beautifully situated on the beach, and the possibility of making their holiday whatever they wish to make it. Now back in Canada, we hold dear our memories of Sisal sur Mer and our holiday amongst the Mayan people.
