The First and Last Best Place for a Family retreat.

The interior of this home has been master crafted with log beams, vaulted ceilings, a stunning Montana river rock fire place and soothing paint colors. It has been redesigned to ensure that families can gather with ease and enjoy privacy. As shown here on our Accessibility Page the main bedroom of the Lodge is Wheel Chair Accessible.

The interior highlights the exterior surroundings with large windows to enjoy both the views of the lake and forest. It has the true feel of a Montana experience that adds to the memories of the last best place.

We have strived our The Flathead Lake House the “first and last best place” for everyone by making the lodge accessible to those with disabilities by incorporating barrier free design. The main floor master bed room and en-suite bath are equipped with a patient lift system that travels from the bed to the toilet, to the large jetted tub. The shower is large enough to accommodate a person in a commode chair, which we have available on site, if needed. Please take a moment to read this article from Spinal Columns and page 2 of the publication of the Alberta Paraplegic Assoc. The main floor of the Lodge also features wide doors and grade level access to the large deck, and outside.

About Deb Idler

In 1989 our family came to Flathead Lake for our first reunion. The impact of this event was so profound that six months later our father bought property on the lake and built The Last Best Place. Our father’s dream was to have a place where his family would want to come together every year near Bigfork, Montana, U.S.A.

Deb Idler purchased this house in 1990
Why Deb Idler chose Bigfork

Our family has been blessed to have this opportunity come true. In 1997 our father sustained a stroke, which limited his ability to enjoy The Last Best Place. It brought to our attention the importance of barrier free design and accessing the beautiful outdoors. Our family wants to make a difference to the lives of others with disabilities that visitthe Flathead Lake area by accommodating their needs.

What makes this house unique

“It is our vision and mission to make this place available to other families, particularly those who may have a physical impairment, and to provide an opportunity to share the magic our family experiences each and every year.” The Idler Family

Family Get Together

Nine of us--including four boys from 10-12--had a great time there! Rented an extra cayak, got some light fishing gear (there was some there already) and the boys were set. They caught some fish, did lots of swimming, cayaking, and just hung out. Lots to do in the area, good restaurants at Bigfork, and great golf nearby. Pretty drive to Glacier, lots of wildlife to see and hiking to do. The house was perfect for our needs (the boys pulled the bedding from the bunk room and turned the loft into a great place to hang out and sleep (with a little movie viewing thrown in), and there was always enough going on that they didn't get bored. Highly recommended for any family group!

A Perfect Getaway From The Everyday

Honestly one of the most relaxing places I have ever had the opportunity to visit. Spending a sunny afternoon overlooking pristine waters and gorgeous mountains truly is a treat at this fabulous cabin getaway.

High blood pressure? I think mine dropped 10 points after just stepping onto the balcony! The home feels warm, inviting and completely peaceful. The renovations that the owners have done are perfectly suited to match the overall feeling of Montana living. The pictures do not do this outstanding property justice! I would definitely recommend this place to my family and friends!

Idyllic Montana lakeside get-away

What a gem! I actually stayed here before the renovations and modifications were made and the place more than lives up to its description. I can see what has been achieved (as shown in posted images) versus my minds-eye recollections of the property when I stayed there. It is both easily accessible as well as secluded with a well-treed lot and access down a well-built driveway. The neighboring, adjacent properties on either side are privately owned and the residents quiet, discrete and respectful. If you have any previous experience staying at any other northwestern US or western Canadian lakeside property, I am sure you will come away from a visit here agreeing that (of its kind) it ranks in the top ten places to stay anywhere in the Pacific Northwest. Even if you don’t fill it to capacity and the weekly rental costs are shared between two or three couples, it is a complete bargain. Look at the companion property (320751) where I’ve also stayed, which sleeps 8, and book both for a large or multi-family house party fo9r up to 18 people. The property is clean and well maintained (it has been extensively renovated) and the owners couldn't be more helpful when it comes to providing specific information on what the region has to offer the holiday-maker on a year-round basis.

Truly the “First and Last Best Place”

I was able to enjoy the “First and Last Best Place” after the major renovations were complete. Needless to say, I was in awe of the beautiful home and the picturesque surrounding. The home is tucked away from others and surrounded by tall pines. There is a distinct feeling of peace, quiet and tranquility.

It is a great place to bring a family and enjoy days on the lake. We spent most of our days swimming, kayaking, sailing, and enjoying the beauty of the lake from the deck. The views of the lake and surrounding area are inspiring.

The renovations were well done and the property is well maintained. The owners spared no expense in ensuring the home is accessible to those with disabilities.

I will be returning to the “First and Last Best Place” the next chance I get!
