The Lords Cove Cottage is nestled among woods, fields and the sea. The beach near us is a mix of sandy beach, rocky beach and mussel beds. (Here there is a free lunch. If you don't know how to prepare mussels, we'll be happy to show you.) From the shore we see loons, herons, and an occasional seal, but rarely another human on our beach.
Five minutes away by car is the lovely village of South Brooksville, home to the world's best little store, offering hearty European breads baked on the spot daily, a fine wine selection, plenty of yummy pastries, and 'The Buck', a delightful cafe. The Tinder Hearth Bakery is a short hike from the cottage. Farmers markets abound. The Stonington Opera House hosts many events - live performances, movies and more. The Steel Drum Band from Brooksville can probably be found playing somewhere nearby. There are many pub and restaurant options in Blue Hill and Castine.
It's also home to Bucks Harbor, gateway to some of the finest sailing on the East Coa
A short hike from the cottage will take you to the shore where you can take long walks at low tide. If you have canoes or kayaks, you can launch at any tide from a beach just 3 minutes away by car. Twenty minutes further takes you to Blue Hill, which has a big grocery store and my favorite Maine art gallery, with a wonderful outdoor sculpture garden. And if your favorite book just fell into the ocean, head for Blue Hill Books, a much nicer experience than shopping on line. Brooksville has a state park - Holbrook Island State Park, and an hour away is Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor. Beautiful Castine and its Maine Maritime Academy are right across the water from Lords Cove. Just staying home is delightfully peaceful and restful for those seeking a meditative experience. This is a pastoral place.
Boat rental is also available. Other nearby activities include hiking, bicycling, shopping for crafts and antiques, attending artistic shows and performances, and dining on traditional seafood dishes.
Amenities: The cottage is perfect for a couple, but can handle more. Upstairs is cozy and rustic. There are two very comfy double beds. There's a third single bed. With our help the sofa downstairs could be re-positioned and opened into a bed. There are reading lights for the beds. The bathroom has a cute claw-foot tub with a shower. Linens and towels are provided.
The kitchen is well-equipped, with a coffee maker, teakettle, dishes, glasses, wine glasses, basic pots and pans, a strainer, grater, knives, scissors, corkscrew, can opener and, of course, sink, stove, and fridge. You may want to bring a radio, TV and/or cell phone.
