The house is amazing, beautiful wood everywhere, floors, walls, ceiling. Nice comfortable furniture and floor to ceiling windows. Post and beam construction with a wide open main living area. While the basement is there to use, the view and space on the main floor proved irresistible and we opted to all (4 adults and 2 kids) stay on the main floor. We found the 2 pull-out beds surprisingly comfortable.

The main part of the house is separate from the basement with separate, outside access. The basement is functional, and increases the number of available beds, Teenagers might appreciate the separate entrance and may not miss the view, but adults relegated to the basement will almost certainly feel they got the raw end of the deal.

We saw whales and dolphins, while sitting on the deck, every day of our stay. The surf was high with beautiful and dramatic waves to watch throughout most of our stay. Even from inside the house, the ocean view is fantastic.

Pat was very informative and helpful before and during our stay and Emma, who met us when we arrived, greeted us with such warmth we felt like we had arrived at a friend's house. The house was spotless and has a well-furnished kitchen. The deck furniture is solid, good-looking, and comfortable, perfect for long whale-watching sessions.

With the surf as it was, it was impossible to get in the water straight off the property. In calmer weather, I imagine the sand beach, a few hundred yards to the north would be great, but with the surf we had, even the sand beach was too rough. The kids did find one small tide-pool to play in that was out of reach of the breaking waves. I imagine that adventurous adults and teens would have had a blast in the surf using the boogie boards that are available here at the house.

Although the nearby town of Makaha looks a bit rough around the edges, we felt secure and comfortable in the house. The neighborhood around the property is nice and solid with friendly and attentive neighbors. During our stay, we were visited by the local police checking up on the property.

We want to let you know that our Holiday stay at the Makaha Pole House was outstanding. The location is very private and the accommodations leave little to be desired. The house is perfect for relaxing and or entertaining whatever one would choose works here. We would highly recommend the home to anyone who would ask. Thank you and we will be back.

The upstairs portion of the house was just as the the photos depicted, gorgeous. The downstairs not so much. Opaque blinds on the downstair's windows would help with privacy. Downstairs has a utility quality to it, which would be ok for a bunch of kids but not for adults.
I would recommend this property with the caveat that it is 1 hour minimum to Honolulu. You can enjoy the fantastic beaches and water based activities on this side of the island though. The Wai'anae boat harbor has numerous boat charters one in particular is EO Wai'anae Tours that offers a more intimate approach to up close encounters with dolphins, whales, turtles. Nice guys, family run business.
The view from the spacious lanai was the topper, spinner dolphins if your paying attention, whales almost everyday, we were always popping up to grab the binoculars or just hypnotized by the sight of them.
We discovered Kahumana Organic Farm & Cafe for great lunches & dinners. Yummy healthy meals and they are doing wonderful things for the community.
We loved the house, being on the quiet side of the island, the folks in the hood were nice, anyone with interest in diving, water sports, those boat tours go right by the house, stopping in front of the house for a known turtle cleaning station, all the way from Wakiki! You have a big advantage.

We so enjoyed our time at the Pole House. We did not use the ground floor at all being just two of us, and in truth spent most of our time out on the beautiful 1,000 lanai. The house is so characterful and the views stunning. We were lucky enough to see both spinner dolphins and hump back whales (thanks Sharon next door!). there is a great choice of nearby beaches, we loved Yokohama Bay but also the quiet swimming at Po'kai. Though there are nt really good restaurants,but we enjoyed using the BBQ and the local supermarket at Tunamaras does a great BBQ chicken and some mean Poke! All the locals were very friendly and we actually felt part of the community. Would thoroghly recommend it - am missing cleeping to the sound of the surf! The owners were very concerned and helpful with information both before we arrived and during out stay.

Property was as advertised. Right on the ocean with beautiful views each evening as the sun sets in the west and only a quarter mile away from one of the most beautiful beaches in Hawaii. Owners were very helpful in seeing that all our expectations were fulfilled including having caretaker bring us a new coffee pot even though the old one still worked and bringing us an additional gas canister for the bbq. Very good communication with owners and making sure our stay was enjoyable. House's living area is large, nice functional kitchen, with an amazing lanai. Would recommend this property for couple looking to get away for a romantic getaway or with another couple looking for a week in paradise. Thanks again for letting us stay in your home.
