At 4144 feet above sea level, summertime highs above 80 degrees are a rarity, and the mountain views are spectacular. Though the town of Banner Elk claims only 995 year around residents, opportunities for recreation, entertainment, shopping and dining abound. With a large number of seasonal residents, and lots of visitors, it would take months to try all of the restaurants in the area. During the summer, visitors come to enjoy the cool air and magnificent scenery, and world class outdoor activities. Hiking, biking, rafting and tubing, forest zip line tours and rock climbing are all nearby. Boone and Blowing Rock have a huge variety of galleries, specialty shops and outlets. The Blue Ridge Parkway makes the grandeur of the mountains accessible even from the car.
The winters can be harsh, and this is great news for fans of southern skiing and winter sports. Beech and Sugar Mountains offer gentle slopes and great ski schools to get the novice started, and they have steeps to challenge even the most advanced skiers.
Fall in the North Carolina mountains is one of the great spectacles of nature, and Banner Elk is at the very center of the show. Fall colors usually peak between October 5 and October 20. If you want to enjoy this special time, be sure to book early, consider reservations for any dining out, and don't be in a hurry to get anywhere.
September, November, April and May are "low season" in the NC mountains, and there are great reasons to visit then. The weather is usually mild, there are few crowds, and you can walk into almost any restaurant and be seated. Please don't let word get out about these special times!
