While the house looks exactly like the pictures, there are some misconceptions in the owner's description. We arrived on a hot day to find that the house is not air-conditioned. When this was mentioned to the owner, she stated that the person who communicated with her about the house didn't ask if it was air-conditioned. I think this should be put in the description of the house. The ocean views are very limited as we had to peak between treetops to see the small slivers of the ocean. I also feel that the description that the house is "steps" from the ocean is misleading. The ocean is actually more like 2 city blocks from the house. The house is in a crowded residential area and since we had to have the windows open in order to try and stay cool, we could hear voices, cars, and motorcyles going by as well as the owner's and neighbor's dogs barking. The owner had a list of things that we couldn't do such as not using the garbage disposal because it causes maggots to appear, not flushing sanitary products down the toilet, not adjusting the showerheads, not using the dryer during the day (which makes sense since the house was so hot during the day). She did supply beach towels, beach chairs, and boogie boards. Overall, we made the best of the situation, but will definitely not recommend this house nor stay here again.
Owner's Response: Aloha guests,
I am sorry to hear that your stay was not as expected. Yes, this has been the warmest summer we have ever had. The wonderful trade winds have been few that would normally make it much cooler. The day you arrived was very hot and expecting air conditioning must have been very disappointing to start with .In our listing on vrbo there is no indication that there is air conditioning. It seemed that you really liked the house when you arrived so I didn't know that you were not happy. I only wish you would have let me know about all of your problems while you were there. I am on the property to help at all times. I will say that most guests that want air con will immediately ask for it before making the reservation. Most residential homes in Hawaii do not have aircon while on the mainland you can't live without it. On another note I want to make it clear to those reading your review that we are by far not 2 city blocks away from the ocean. We are 100 yards from the beach, it takes me less than 2 minutes to get there. Our little beach neighborhood happens to be one of the most quiet neighborhoods on the windward side. People comeback to this area to vacation just because it is quiet and the beach is less crowded than others.
I am sorry that there was a misunderstanding about the maggots. I ask people to try and not leave their trash for days or there will be problems with bugs and other creatures appearing. In a tropical setting you have to dispose of trash and not let it sit around. There is no disposal use because we are on a septic system which I find most people are familiar with the rules for it, especially the disposal of sanitary items. So no maggots in the house unless you don't take out your trash.
Thank you for making your comment on how the house is just like it is advertised by the pictures on the website. It is a very large house for a vacation rental in Hawaii. Once again I feel badly that your stay was not as expected and thank you for making it work anyway. I only wish I knew to make it better if it was possible, or to clear up any issues.
We are in a residential neighborhood not a resort town. There are regular sounds of life going on as normal. But most people comment on how quiet it is here and not noisy. I ask our guests to respect the peace and quiet of the neighborhood to keep Waimanalo a little piece of heaven by the sea.
