Home Away from Home / We never wanted to leave

Review Submitted: October 24, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
Pets place lived up to all the previous excellent reviews. Our week long stay with 2 small boys was as easy as being at home. The house is very very comfortable and the pool is outstanding. We felt very secure and very well taken care by Pete, Itza and two dogs any small boys could fall in love with. The house location is centrally located in the Manual Antonio area and the Costa Ricans know how to take care of their visitors. I highly recommend Pete's Place for a family or group of friends who want to visit one of the most beautiful places on earth. The only thing we would change is extending our stay, a week is not enough when you feel like your at home.

My family of 7 (ages 8-67) stayed at Pete;s Place in Early April. It was fantastic! Pete was there to great us and was good about checking to see if we needed anything. He gave great suggestions about places to eat and things to do in the area. It is a very secure and convenient place to stay with a wonderful Costa Rica atmosphere! The pool was great, the porches are wonderful...it was all very terrific! We drove a rental car and found it very doable...roads aren't great..but charming all the same. Be sure to get a GPS if you drive in Costa Rica!!! Do enjoy Pete's place,,, it's perfect. I didn't bring a hair dryer and Pete even ran his right over for me to use during our stay! Best area to stay in Costa Rica on the Pacific side and Quepos is very quaint as well as Manuel Antonio! It is about a 5 hour drive from San Jose...so plan well!! BUt do go and enjoy Pete and his lovely place!!!

A perfectly located house to explore from

Review Submitted: April 8, 2009 Date of Stay: February 2009
We had a family holiday at Pete's Place in Feb 2009 and had a fanatastic time. There were 7 adults and one 18 month old which meant we were full to capacity but the spacious house, the large balcony and the great pool area provided everything we needed. The house is in such a good location as it is walking distance to nice restaurants and the supermarket but at the same time the grounds of the house are very private and you are surrounded by jungle and lush trees. We used the local bus service lots to pop down to the beach, to the national park or to go into town so we really didn't need to rent a car. We loved the birds and the animals and just sitting by the pool surronded by the noise of the Howler monkey or watching the view from the balcony. The beaches down the road are fantastic - much better than I had expected. I would highly recommend this as a house to rent if you are planning a trip to Costa Rica - we had perfect weather every single day, Pete was on hand to help us out with trips and transfers and we all had a fantastic time. Thanks again Alison

Fantastic Vacation at Pete´s Place

Review Submitted: March 5, 2009 Date of Stay: February 2009
Our family stayed at Pete´s Place in February 09´ and we had a fantastic time. The location of the property was perfect for us as we often split into two groups and Pete provides two sets of keys, so coming and going could not have been easier. We could walk to the bus stop, a big grocery store(with liquor) great restaurants and a pharmacy in less than three minutes. Taxis were less than a minute away.
The house itself was nicely appointed, the beds were comfortable, the kitchen totally equipped and there was lots of hot water all the time.
The pool is fantastic, huge by local standards, with a sitting bench in it and a shallow and deep end well marked.( it is located down the property so is private and totally surrounded by jungle.)
Pete is always around to offer advice but is not in the way. His dogs Max and Moose are great, thee kids really enjoyed having them around and they seemed really happy to see us when we returned from the beach or town.
We enjoyed sitting with drinks watching the sunset from the front balcony which has a fan, huge hammock for two and a good breeze day or night. The side balcony was great early in the morning to watch the sun come up with an unbelieveable mountain view.
We would not hesitate to recommend this propery to our friends ( we will be back ourselves as we felt we definetely got good value for our buck!!).
Mauel Antonio itself is a special place, you feel at home right away. The beach and the National Park are fantastic and like the town of Puerto Quepos are only five minutes away by car ( about seven minutes by bus).
We had an amazing massage with Pete´s girlfriend Itza, who is a lovely Tica , proud of her country and who also helped us with all our tours( they pick you up and drop you back at the house).
Thankyou Pete and Itza for a memorable vacation, and we look forward to seeing you again in the next year or so ( depending on the economy!!!) Thanks again Mona L. and family.

A Warm Welcome Away from the Cold!

We have just returned from a second stay at Pete's Place and we agree with all the positive reviews that have been expressed by others.

We stayed at the Casa Linda (a.k.a. the Big House) and really appreciate the welcoming atmosphere of this house. It is spacious and has air conditioning. The kitchen is large and has all the essential appliances, pots and pans, and everything you need to cook a decent meal if you do not want to eat out all the time. And that’s exactly what we did on a couple of occasions. We bought foodstuff from a supermarket within a few minutes’ walk from the house and seafood from a street vendor in town. The absence of fast food chains in Quepos means that every meal is a form of support for local businesses, whether we ate at a restaurant or bought ingredients from a street vendor to prepare our own.

The house can comfortable accomodate 6 or 7 people so it is more expensive than many hotel rooms in the neighbourhood but you are getting a whole lot more.

Pete’s Place has a beautiful big swimming pool that is larger and deeper than many hotel swimming pools. It is located at the base of his property some 100 yards from the houses. You can splash around to your heart’s content without disturbing anyone!

Pete's Plase is just off the main road from Quepos to Manuel Antonio National Park, so it is easy to get around whether in a rental car or by taxi (a taxi stand is two blocks away). Traffic is noisy in Costa Rica but with the windows closed and a/c on in the house the noise did not bother us at all.

Pete is always there when his assistance is needed. His dogs, Moose and Maxwell, are very friendly creatures.

I have been to many places and experienced many types of accommodation. Quepos is a great retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life. Staying at Pete’s Place added enormously to the enjoyment of my vacation.

Pete's Place is not just another rental vacation home, it's Pete's Place!

You should know before you rent.....

You need to love traffic noise if you rent this place. The deck overlooking the ocean is spitting distance to the very busy main road in and out of Manual Antonio. The house is also at the top of a hill so the traffic is in low gear and very loud as it comes by. I would not call the ocean view "outstanding" either like it's advertised. The deck is also fully enclosed in glass, so it can get very hot with no breeze. (You can open sections of the solarium, but, once again, you need to love traffic noise!) It's not as spacious and airy as it looks in the photos. (wide angle lens used perhaps?) The noise from this road starts early in the morning is steady into early evening. The side deck definately has a nice view of the jungle, but still quite noisy. Another lady staying on the property said to me "you will get used to the noise." But, that really wasn't what we were looking for.

The main bedroom is also a few feet away from a busy road and separated from the main house by a common use hallway and laundry room.

Yes, if you are in the house with the airconditioning running, TV or music on, and all doors and windows closed, you can escape the road noise. Also, there is no secure parking with the recommendation that everything is taken out of the vehicle and the doors left unlocked so theives don't have to smash your windows.

Had I known the house was so close to the main road, I would not have rented this property. I think people should know this before booking if you are seeking something a little quieter or off the main drag.
Owner's Response: In response to this review I can only say take it in context with the other reviews I have received for this property, Yes, there is some road noise, but the reality is there is only one main road from the town of Puerto Quepos to Manuel Antonio and the majority of places, including most hotels are on or just off this road. Road noise is more common here in Costa Rica, but that is the culture.
Pete's is at the top of the hill, that's the reason it has such good views, both to the Ocean and to the Mountains and Jungle. You definitely don't hear the road when the house is closed up with the air con running.( ie; No problem sleeping!!)
The upside to the location is it's within walking distance of stores, clinic, restaurants, taxis, and bus stops.(Therefore a car is not necessary, all tours will pick you up and return you to Pete's).
As far as the parking goes, it is right outside the gate, ( I also have a lighted parking lot if you prefer) there have been no problems with thieves, we suggest leaving nothing in it, and unlocked only as good common sense.
I would suggest you stay in the house for more than fifteen minutes before leaving and give yourself a chance to enjoy it as much as the majority of our clients and friends have over the past two years.
Thank you Pete. We are all aware that you can't please all of the people all of the time, but we can certainly try, and we do!!!)

Living Up to Expectations

Maria and Ari Silver Spring, MD
Review Submitted: August 26, 2008 Date of Stay: August 2008
Our 5-member family just returned from a one-week stay at Pete's Place. The description and photos lived up to our expectations, and the experience of living in such a beautiful home and on such a well maintained property was like a fantasy. We had plenty of space.

Although it's hard to decide, each of us had a "favorite" thing about Pete's Place. We loved the wildlife and flowers, the proximity to the beach and other activity but still being somewhat removed from the "bustle", the pool and bathhouse perfect for an early morning or evening dip, every amenity one would want in a home, a well-behaved pet to keep company with us on the deck and porch...and oh my goodness the views! The deck was everyone's favorite place to read, chat, and eat breakfast. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed with with Pete's Place.

Just wanted to tell you how happy we were that we selected your house to rent for our vacation stay. The grounds were beautifully landscaped, the house was spacious, the deck and its views were magnificent, and the pool—well, how can you beat having your own private pool and bathhouse tucked away in the jungle? And we could walk to the beach, to the grocery store, the internet café, etc. We were somewhat nervous renting a house over the internet for such a long stay —what if it was misrepresented, what if the photography was all done with wide-angle lens, what if….(you get the picture)—but we needn’t have worried. Thanks again Pete for being such a gracious host and sharing Moose with us. A warm hello to Itza and Aby.

We recently stayed at Pete’s place for a week in early January '08. It was a very comfortable and convenient stay. I would recommend Pete’s Place for any stay in the Quepos/Manuel Antonio area.

The highlights of this facility are the cleanliness (Alicia comes every M/W/F), the mountain view off the deck is absolutely wonderful and is where we spent most of out time while at the home, and enough kitchen supplies to make any meal. The pool is very peaceful and tranquil, and I recomend a short hike beyond the pool for great jungle wildlife.
